Exercising once a day?

Can anyone explain to me why we are only allowed to exercise once a day. I take my dogs out twice a day locally (in a very rural area) and avoid other people. What is the problem with this?

Callistemon Wed 06-Jan-21 14:46:26

We could all be insufferable, couldn’t we?

Maggiemaybe the Government guideline you referred to under the heading Travel, does indeed mention the exercise of animals.
It means that you can travelto attend to the care and exercise of an animal.
That is, you are allowed to get in a car or walk, if you need to care for an animal which is not in your household i.e. a horse you have stabled etc.
It has no bearing at all on exercising an animal already in your household.
The rule for that is clear, it has to be included in with your exercise, which is allowed once a day.

Well done
I'm a bit cowardly about a knee replacement, especially at the moment so no yomping for me.
A short level walk would be lovely, but, as GrannyAnnie points out, I must not drive 2 miles to be able to do that because it would be inconsiderate to others.
Even if English people are allowed to do that.

I , too, find MissC obvious bragging distasteful and uncaring. The vast majority of us on here are doing the best we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Most of us will live in towns and cities and no where near any moors or open countryside. So could she not enjoy it without going on about how wonderfully fit and well she is? Also, MissC constantly contradicts herself. She talks about when her partner is there. So presumably he comes and goes and may possibly catch it and pass it on (especially as he sounds the complete opposite to MissC. In fact I am surprised she has anything to do with such an unhealthy specimen). She doesn't see anyone, but walks into town most days to go shopping for fresh supplies as she abhors the thought of stale food. Surely she sees lots of people then? She says she is going walking with a friend, so that's another person our solitary MissC meets . And then she talks about driving her camper van for an hour to get to Fountains Abbey for a walk. That's quite a distance when you have such beautiful moors and woods on your doorstep.
We are lucky we don't live in countries where lockdown means exactly that and not the casual " I will do what I want" approach we have here. I believe we are expected to use our common sense as much as possible. But not to abuse the limited freedoms we have still got. And if you must choose to blatantly ignore the rules and not make even the slightest effort, then at least be humble and quiet about it.

Maggirmaybe thank you so much for the recommendation for the Fabulous Fifties on Utube. Have just done a 30 minute workout without having to brave the cold.

I agree, there is no justice, no reason sometimes, and I hope you are well now.

Is the Fabulous Fifties suitable for the Never Been Fabulous Seventies?

We are not interested in your exercise regime, for us lucky ones that can get out, keep it to yourself
be SENSITIVE to others, bragging about it is what irritates many.

Who is that addressed to by the way ?

The rules and guidelines are all set out on gov.uk and of course we should all follow them. None of us are so special that we can do our own thing and expect others to smile indulgently, unless of course we are exempted due to circumstances acknowledged by the regulations.

So, under the rules re exercise: You should minimise time spent outside your home.....This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.

But attending to the care and exercise of an animal is given as a separate valid reason to leave the house, so walking the dog is allowed.

I agree with this and abide by the Law. I don’t like it and I live by myself. What if everyone went out for several walks because they ‘need’ to or couldn’t see it hurting anyone?
Part of the reason for this latest lockdown is everyone applying their own interpretation on the rules.

How thoroughly unpleasant some of these posts have been.
It really isn’t IMO People like Miss Chateline perhaps having an overlong walk or going to the market too often that is causing the spread, it is people spending time in groups indoors particularly.
Whatever the answer, is she right or wrong she sounds a lot more balanced than SOME. Of those weighing into her

Mokryna, I remember wondering at the time of the first lockdown, how other countries that are much stricter than ours would get on in combatting the virus, also I wonder how the countries that habitually wear masks or face coverings do in relation to our restrictions, but we don't get told any facts, surely by now with all the information gathered the powers that be know how and where and under what circumstances this virus is spread. Why are we not being told facts and figures?

MissChateline Wed 06-Jan-21 15:17:24

Lizbetthan55. What a horrible comment from someone who knows nothing and immediately makes judgemental comments. I will attempt to put the record straight for you.
My partner is here now because she got stuck in our apartment in the Canary Islands. We didn’t see each other from March to August. Walking the hills during this time on my own kept me sane and gave me something to do. I managed to get out there to see her when we were able to travel but had to get back home at the end of august.
She stayed on the islan and finally managed to get home at the start of December. This is not as you think someone coming and going on a regular basis.
The fact that my wife dislikes walking does bother me as I worry about her health. But that is her decision. She hardly goes out at all so is not mixing with anyone else.
My walking partner is my bubble. She lives alone. We go out on a socially distanced walk probably once a fortnight.
I didn’t say I had driven my camper van to fountains abbey. I said that it was still open for visitors.
I know that I am lucky to have this on my doorstep and I suspect that this is what is bothering some.

Lucca Wed 06-Jan-21 15:21:08

Nice post MissC and good of you to take the time to give an explanation

Casdon Wed 06-Jan-21 15:22:33

I still don’t understand why it’s okay in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to exercise as many times a day as you want outside, but not in England - all the countries have just updated their guidance so it’s not timelag that’s the reason.

GrauntyHelen Wed 06-Jan-21 15:30:06

If everyone flouts the rules we will never get out of this Your dog doesn't need two walks and neither do you

You are lucky, it's a lovely area.
We live in a lovely area too but what makes me cross is that, if you needed to drive a couple of miles to start your walk, you can but there is another rule here just because of the artificial construct of a border!

Callistemon Wed 06-Jan-21 15:40:03

MissC - Which, of course, is the fault of politicians, not you.

I'm with Lucca on this. I wish I was as fit as Miss C but I'm older and with RA so I'm no longer able to yomp over our moorland for hours at a time. I am fit enough to walk over the moors or in our lovely open countryside for an hour or even two. I love being outdoors and my regular walks have kept me on a more even keel, kept my joints and muscles moving during this difficult time.
I have walked my dogs every morning for at least an hour for as long as I can remember. They're out again at tea time. This is the extent of my rule breaking. I haven't seen my grandchildren, visited friends or loved ones. I haven't been inside anyone else's home, or had people into mine. Our food is delivered so we can avoid the risks associated with supermarkets and shops.
I was out for an hour this morning and spoke from a distance with a neighbour who was litter picking on our park. I saw a couple of other people walking their dogs, a friendly wave and good morning but no close encounters of the scary kind. I'll take that spaniel out again this evening, brief pavement walk, in the dark. I'll see no one. Dogs like routines, it helps them be calm, well behaved, happy companions. Keeping my dogs in that frame of mind helps me to be happy. My experience of the dog walking community round here is generally very positive. Happy days.

Well I’m a Never Been Fabulous Sixties, Callistemon, and nobody’s tried to eject me from the group yet, though I can’t see me ever competing with the lovely Schellea!

I’m glad you enjoyed it, Ilovecheese - there are loads of work-outs to choose from and the 7 and 14 day challenges are very good. I love cheese too, btw, which is one of the reasons why I need to exercise. smile

Nanna58 Wed 06-Jan-21 16:43:31

Will continue to walk my dogs twice a day. Those who will disagree with this either have no dogs or very unhappy dogs! I know some people who go to the shops every day , I only once a week, and as I am nowhere near anyone else when dog walking I think this evens out my version of ‘ sticking to the rules’ .
