Return of The Clap?

Sky news is saying there is a push to bring back the 8.00 pm clapping on Thursdays, this time for 'Heroes' instead of the 'NHS'. My instinctive reaction was 'no way am I joining in with that all over again'. It felt daft enough the first time round to be clapping people who could not hear it, and I can't face going back to that, it feels like Groundhog Day.

I have huge respect for everyone working in every part of the care sector, for all essential workers who have kept the Country running over the past year. I am truly grateful to all of them. But what they deserve is a pay rise, not the population of the UK freezing on their doorsteps in the dark once a week, making noises they cannot hear.

If there was a way I could supply a home cooked meal to the doorstep of anyone coming off a long shift, I would leap at the opportunity. Petitions to increase the pay and conditions of essential workers, I'm right there. But I am not doing the clapping again.

Hear, hear Willow

If clapping meant the idiots, finally got the message, I would clap every night but other than that, clapping is pointless as so many selfishly refuse to face reality, follow the guidelines to ensure NHS workers are not overwhelmed, overworked and exhausted!

Great post, B9Exchange..... deserves a clap for itselfthanks

NotANana Thu 07-Jan-21 10:51:31

I will not be joining in either, because I really can't see the ;point.
The "heroes" (health service staff, carers, teachers etc) who are being applauded would be better served by being paid a decent wage, IMHO.

I will applaud them when none of them are forced to resort to using food bans.

Over-senimentality.

Secondwind Thu 07-Jan-21 10:57:03

Not this time. It was in daylight and warmer weather last time, apart from anything else!

4allweknow Thu 07-Jan-21 10:57:04

Didn't do the clapping last time and won't this time round. I have great respect for all those in the NHS caught up in Covid pandemic. I also have great admiration for all those who carry on their day to day job eg utility workers, lorry drivers and those shop workers all who expose themself almost daily to masses of adults all potential carriers of the virus and don't earn massive wages. Without them where would we be virus or no virus.

I heard an interview with a nurse recently and she said that people needn’t clap, but please, just obey the rules ... that’s all she asked for and I quite agree.
Oh, wait, no, that’s not all ..... I think the nurses, doctors etc. need a huge pay rise for what they’re going through...

Moggycuddler Thu 07-Jan-21 11:05:17

SuzannahM

Not to mention the number of regulars who clapped for the NHS and other front line workers one night and had a party the next and/or refused to wear masks when out and about.

Exactly.

Nannapat1 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:06:29

I agree with you B9exchange. We did clap the first time as did other neighbours but this was early days and everything was new and strange. 9 months on and having given it some thought, no we won't be out clapping.

Nannapat1 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:08:41

I would also add that I too have great respect for all the essential workers who have had to be out there, not just health care workers.

Nelly99 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:12:59

Return of the clap ??
Sorry it just tickled me !

SylviaPlathssister Thu 07-Jan-21 11:13:47

Please start clapping again. My children are Doctors and they saw how hollow it became.

SylviaPlathssister Thu 07-Jan-21 11:14:22

I meant please DONT start clapping again.

Metra Thu 07-Jan-21 11:20:50

Instead of clapping how about everyone standing on their doorsteps shouting 'Pay rise for nurses'. Just a thought!

weenanni59 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:29:03

I think that most NHS workers would rather have adequate staffing and a pay rise .
Perhaps if they were given some extra annual leave to take when we get through all of this they would feel a bit more appreciated and it would be more useful than me standing freezing in the dark clapping my hands .

cassandra264 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:31:57

My ACs are front line NHS/key workers and all they want is for people to obey the rules and help stop the collapse of the essential services we all depend on.

The sense of entitlement that some people still seem to have, which results in an apparently unshakeable belief that their own personal freedoms should never be curtailed whatever the risk to others, makes them - and their colleagues - really angry angry

NannyDaft Thu 07-Jan-21 11:38:25

I don’t think I will this time !

polnan Thu 07-Jan-21 11:38:30

I agree, didn`t clap the first time... give them a pay rise.. and obey the rules

Kim19 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:45:44

Have heard that some nurses are being offered an hourly financial incentive to do extra once their shift is finished as they are so short staffed. Can't decide if this is a good or bad thing.

songstress60 Thu 07-Jan-21 11:46:49

I won't join in. What they need to do is improve the pay and conditions of key workers, and don't get me going on New Years honours. Very few key workers - nearly all celebrities. I mean Lewis Hamilton for Godsake. Arise Sir Tax Exile. I will NOT be clapping. It's an empty gesture.

Craftycat Thu 07-Jan-21 11:54:30

Living in a very close knit community in a cul de sac I enjoyed the weekly chats after the clapping in the summer but TBH I am not keen to go out in the cold & get chilled.
I doubt it will come to much TBH.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 07-Jan-21 11:57:43

Won't be doing it either. We did it the first time but were put off when the politicians took it over. I agree with all those who suggest that a pay rise and an effort to improve staffing would be of much more use to our hard-pressed NHS workers, and to other front-line people like bin wo/men, posties and shop workers.

Glad to hear that the other kind of clap is probably not returning - great thread title!

CrazyGrandma2 Thu 07-Jan-21 12:05:05

Neither am I, although I am very thankful for all the work done by key workers across the board.

Someone posted on a local website announcing the revival of it and condemning all those people who wouldn't be participating. I replied by saying there are many reasons why people cannot get to their front door and found her post judgmental. Next time I looked, it had been taken down.

Paperbackwriter Thu 07-Jan-21 12:27:29

I didn't mind it the first time round as it was good to come out and chat with the neighbours in the road but at 8pm in January? We won't even be able to see them.

Ladypatti Thu 07-Jan-21 12:29:59

I know it sounds stupid but I feel as if I’m being dictated to
I will not be clapping this time although I do appreciate all that everyone is doing
