'Universal vaccine' that can conquer all variants could be available within a year thanks to British scientists!

A universal vaccine that would work on all Covid-19 variants by targeting the core of the virus instead of just the spike protein could be available in as little as a year, researchers say.

British scientists at the University of Nottingham are developing a "universal” Covid-19 vaccine which, if successful, would end the need to keep tweaking existing jabs as the virus mutates.

Bluedaisy. If you’re moving in a couple of weeks all the more reason to have the vaccine as, once you’ve moved, especially if you have to change doctors etc you might not get the vaccine for ages. We wore two masks: the disposable one first with a fabric, tighter fitting one over it. I felt really protected. Put hand sanitiser on before going into the sports hall and while I was there. It was so well organised and safe. No reaction to the jab whatsoever. Changed my clothes as soon as I got home. Good luck with everything.

Bluedaisy if it helps I’ve had the Oxford AZ with no reactions/side effects at all! You’ll be asked about allergies/ reactions before being given the jab. The jab itself you hardly know it’s being done, very quick, not like when you have blood taken for tests. Let them know your concerns, then you’ll rest for 15 mins when you’ll be monitored for any unusual reactions. A lot of people are nervous for the first one, then they can’t wait for the second!

We lead in covid genomics, we are surging ahead of the lumbering EU with our fantastic vaccination rollout and now this latest wonderful news !

Great Britain indeed ?? !

Do we HAVE to make it about being 'British'? Can't we leave the pointless jingoism out of it?

Aepgirl Mon 15-Feb-21 11:11:00

I think British scientist have worked their socks off in producing the vaccine so swiftly. We should all be proud of them.

Rosalyn69 Mon 15-Feb-21 11:05:44

It must be a great time to be a medical scientist. ?

Bluedaisy Mon 15-Feb-21 11:04:11

Oh dear.....first thing this morning I had a phone call from my GP to offer me the vaccine on Thursday. I was up for it up until now but suddenly I’m not so sure. There’s a few reasons for this, 1) we’re moving in a couple of weeks and I’m scared I’ll have a bad reaction to it as I’m allergic to quite a lot and haven’t time to be I’ll at the moment, secondly I really wanted the Oxford vaccine and my DH had to have a different one a week ago in the same place, thirdly I hate needles, also the thought of mixing with all those people in such a big place worries me as I’ve been shielding up until now due to health problems......oh dear, I think I’m making excuses because it’s such an unknown vaccine and I’m stressed at the moment. Has anyone been made ill on here by having the vaccine so far? I know I sound like a chicken and I’m usually so strong!

4allweknow Mon 15-Feb-21 10:58:33

The development of the vaccines for Covid has been miraculous, shows what money can do. Without the massive boost to fund scientists we would be a long way off. Anyone any info on if or how long the current ones are effective for.

Newatthis Mon 15-Feb-21 10:58:01

Our scientists are so good at this - well done to all involved in research - may we should have a national applaud for them all?

Aveline Mon 15-Feb-21 10:55:06

When it comes to the annual flu jab we just have 'the flu jab'. No wondering which company/group of scientists have come up with that version. I'm always glad of it and grateful too.

Alioop Mon 15-Feb-21 10:49:40

Great news for us all! They have been saying this will be a yearly jab like the flu so hopefully this one will be all done and dusted by the autumn/winter for us all to get next time.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 15-Feb-21 10:47:38

Good for them, but the University of Copenhagen has beaten them to it. Their vaccine that does the same will be available in two months time.

Bazza Mon 15-Feb-21 10:47:04

Absolutely brilliant news! Let’s not forget the volunteers who were the guinea pigs.

I think it’s dreadful how any display of pride in our country’s achievement is sneeringly dismissed by some sectors as flag-waving jingoism.

What is the matter with them ?

I don't know. What do you think is the matter with me? From my point of view, I'm perfectly fine. I just don't like flag-waving jingoism. Science is a global, collaborative endeavour.

GagaJo Mon 15-Feb-21 09:12:41

Where I am, everyone wants to get the vaccine and no one has a preference for which one, OTHER than one covidiot who is a denier about the virus, the vaccine and probably still thinks 5G is involved. But he isn't Swiss.

I am gagging for my vaccine, but roll out here is slow so I might not get it until I move back to the UK in June.

BlueSky Mon 15-Feb-21 09:09:38

GagaJo What’s the vaccination situation in Switzerland? I have friends in France and Italy who seem to believe the Oxford AZ is not suitable for the over 60s, because that’s what they’ve been told. Now even younger people don’t feel they are going to be protected with that vaccine! I’ve had the AZ and am very pleased and grateful!

25Avalon Mon 15-Feb-21 09:07:39

I agree GagaJo. It would give the scientists a good laugh - they all work together nationally and internationally to overcome all sorts of diseases including Covid. Their joy as ours should be is in coming up with a winner for all.

GagaJo Mon 15-Feb-21 08:59:24

Oh for goodness sake! Can't we just accept the good news without political bashing / crowing?

tickingbird Mon 15-Feb-21 08:52:56

“Jingoism”?? It just makes a change to read something good about the UK as, on here especially, it’s constant bashing by those incapable of objectivity. The constant sneering and put downs and all because of loathing the present government and losing the referendum and various attempts to overturn the result.

It would be refreshing to read something positive for a change. If Labour were in government (heaven forbid) then the usual critics on here would be putting a completely different spin on matters.

This thread makes very uncomfortable reading. The news about a universal vaccine is wonderful, but I agree with growstuff that its suddenly turned into "how great are we, look we're world leading". Read beyond the headline and you find something else.

From the original article:

UK company Scancell, which specialises in developing cancer vaccines, and several other firms from Europe and the US are already working on variant proof jabs and hope to prove shortly they can produce an effective immune response.

A number of other biotechs are working on similar jabs, including myNEO in Belgium, and Osivax in France.

By all means praise the scientists looking into this universal vaccine, but don't get into the whole world beating thing. Science is international, even if the writers at Yahoo aren't.

Hetty58 Sun 14-Feb-21 19:11:53

I had my first jab yesterday. I'm just so grateful and give thanks to the scientists, NHS, doctors, nurses and volunteers - all working so hard to protect us.

I see the ‘can’t be seen to praise the UK’ poster(s) are alive and well. I think it’s marvellous that we’re leading the world and if someone objects to being called out then maybe don’t call out others. Do as you would be done by and all that.

Where did you see them?

The UK has been a world leader in biotech for decades. That doesn't make me proud of flag-waving jingoism.

I booked both my doses yesterday, so things are definitely going in the right direction.

We have a young Romanian woman as a cleaning lady. She's quite religious, close to RC. She told me that she and her friends here have religious discussions and believe it's near the time for the Messiah to return.

Some info on conspiracy theories in Romania:

One of my next door neighbours is Hungarian. In the limited brief conversations I've had with her over the past year, she's regurgitated the same nonsense about Bill Gates, George Soros, dangerous vaccines and the vaccine "mafia". Her English is very broken, so she relies on information from Hungarian social media sources.
