Has anyone who has had the second Astra Zeneca vaccine found the side effects were not as bad the second time around?

I'm a bit aprehensive about getting my 2nd dose of AZ as I had a swollen lymph node on my collar bone which lasted about 6 weeks. Also on the day I had mine, I felt very tired and fluey but was fine the next day.

Had my second AZ last Thursday. The effects of it are no where as bad as the first one. With the first one I had a sore arm for about 3 days, with the second one I had no side effects at all

I had my first vaccine under medical supervision at a hub as I have a history of anaphylaxis to many foods and drugs. I was completely overwhelmed by the personal attention I received in the middle of hundreds of people being vaccinated. Thankfully I was ok and just had the expected side effects over next 48 hours.
I was so reassured by a doctor keeping an eye on me and am due to have my 2nd in a couple of weeks time.

The only effect of my first AZ jab was tenderness in my upper arm. As I’d read about it on GN, I took paracetamol just before my follow-up jab on Tuesday. My arm was okay but I slept for most of Wednesday.
DH has also had AZ. He had a tender arm on both occasions.
Others have had more side effects but I can only relate our experiences and hope they give some reassurance.
The vaccinations make us feel we’re a step closer to freedom and normality, that we’re less vulnerable now.

Irrespective of the after effects I was determined to have my second jab. A little worse than the first but totally compensated by the huge relief I felt. No, I don't feel totally safe but I certainly feel MUCH safer and that's giving me inner joy. Priceless.

I had the Pfizer jab, no side effects first time and only a mildly sore arm for 36 hours for the second one - and I think that was probably down to the rather ham-fisted lady who "did" me!

DH had the AZ and had no side effects for either.

Parsley3 Sun 02-May-21 13:23:25

Luckily, I had no reactions with either of my AZ jags. I do hope that those who chose not to go for the second one cancel their appointments well in advance. I am waiting to see what happens if or when proof of vaccination is ever needed. It is looking like annual boosters will be necessary.

Kadinsky, perhaps you can explain your fears and ask to have a different vaccine 2nd time around? There was talk of being able to 'mix them' so maybe it would be possible in your case? Better than not having full coverage? And to still be at risk of passing it to others.? Thats the issue too isnt it? Not just ourselves we are protecting, but helping to STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID??!?

I was quite ill after my first AZ. Had the second a week ago, rather fuzzy head the day after but right as rain apart from that.

Nannan2 Sun 02-May-21 13:10:06

No matter how bad any reactions it wont be as bad as how i felt and was that december (2019) and so im going ahead with 2nd jab when they ring(should be soon) my youngest dd had her 2nd jab early (she had her 1st 3 days before us) we all have underlying health problems. She had pfizer too, said she's been fine. But my cleaners had 2nd astra zeneca so ill ask her when she comes through the week how she was this time.Anyone whose weathered the first jab but shy off the 2nd are crazy, because cant they imagine how bad it might be if they were to catch covid then?Be best to weather out the 2nd jab if they have to than take or pass on a covid risk.??

Absolutely disgraceful Katyj. At least let other people have the vaccine slot.

BlueSky Sun 02-May-21 12:38:30

My surgery reported 12 people didn’t turn up for appointments on Friday, not even ringing to cancel. For goodness sake have the decency to cancel and give someone else a chance disgraceful ?

Agree Katyj The recent horrors home and abroad soon forgotten.sad

No I'll effects from first Pfizer, really bad from second jab, glands swollen, headache, dizziness. Like others I think I had the virus in 2019, before testing began..Not too keen on needing a top up in the Autumn

My Mum had no effects with the first, absolute brain fog with the 2nd. Isn't it funny how we all react?

JaneJudge Sun 02-May-21 12:06:50

Is there any way of testing to see if you have natural antibodies and those from the virus? We thought we had it after seeing a show mid Feb and an overnight stay in a hotel, went in several pubs - oh unimaginable! 5 days later we both had a stay in bed flu, migraine, loss of taste/appetite and gastric type stuff. Then we were both ill after the first AZ, I felt like I'd had a GA and spent the whole day in bed and had a rash. It would be interesting to know if we had had it

Mr M and I had our second Pfizer vaccinations on Thursday. My arm ached on Thursday night and on Friday. It’s more or less better now. I also had a slight headache but took painkillers and they sorted it out. The side effects were similar to after the first vaccine, but a little worse. Mr M had no side effects with the first vaccine, and was very tired with the second. No other side effects. I’m grateful to the scientists who have developed this vaccine. I dread to think what the situation would be if there were no vaccines. Now we need to get the rest of the world vaccinated.

Gajahgran Sun 02-May-21 07:50:19

I had some slight side effects after the first Astra Zeneca jab, sore arm and feeling very achy for 24 hours and my DH had flu like symptoms for 24 hours.
We had our 2nd Astra Zeneca jabs a week ago and had no side effects apart from a sore arm. I am on asprin for blood thinning so made sure I took them.
I was very pleased and grateful to receive the AZ jab, felt it was a step towards more freedom.

In an attempt to reassure those going for their second AstraZeneca vaccination, I’d like to relate my experience. The first one gave me headaches for two or three days, culminating in a migraine (to which I’m susceptible) but the second dose, which I had on Thursday, caused no side effects whatsoever.
I took paracetamol an hour before my appointment and again at bedtime.
Good luck! ?

Witzend Sun 02-May-21 07:07:49

A dd had worse side effects than anyone else in the family after her 1st jab. They lasted a few days, bad headache, generally feeling rough.

But especially given that side effects are said to be worse if you’ve already had it, I’m pretty sure that she had COVID in January 2020, before anyone would have made the connection.
She caught ‘something’ on a flight to S Africa with her partner (barmy army cricket fan) from another passenger continually coughing all the way. She spent most of the 2 week trip laid up in a hotel bed, and felt very tired for quite a while afterwards. Her partner was unaffected, but he’s one of those people who never get colds (a related virus IIRC).

Hi, back to report on my 2nd vaccine. I had my second AZ on Friday at 9am felt fine all day but then I woke during the night with headache again, it lasted all day yesterday, i spent the day in and out of bed sleeping a lot .I kept up with paracetamol but it didn’t touch it.
At least I didn’t feel sick have diarrhoea or shivering like I did with the first. Still unpleasant though glad I’m feeling better today .

SueDonim Wed 14-Apr-21 20:30:48

I received an appointment letter today for my second AZ vaccine, next week. I’ll be trotting along there on the dot to get jabbed.

I had a reaction to the first one, severe headache, flu-like symptoms, but as I understand it, with the AZ you’re less likely to have a reaction to the second dose. Also, I’m not in the group of people who’ve had the clotting reaction so I feel it’s safe to have it done, and safer than getting Covid.

Both myself and my partner had horrible side effects from the AZ vaccine back at the beginning of February - lasted two or three days. My DH went into hospital the day after the jab and was exposed to Covid whilst there. He came home a couple of days later and we both developed symptoms as the vaccine hadn’t had time to work. We’re both going for second jab at the end of April and have been told by various people that the side effects are worse if you’ve had Covid. I have to say though, as unpleasant as the side effects were, Covid itself was much, much worse, so although apprehensive, we’ll still be having the jab as I’ve no wish to get it again.

Oh you poor things, that’s awful. Hope you are ok now. I had dreadful side effects after my first dose of AZ. Temperature, aches and pains and an appalling headache for a couple of days. I’m going for my second jab on Tuesday - very happy and grateful to have it but, I hope the side effects are not as bad as the first time! ?

Alegrias1 Wed 14-Apr-21 17:23:02

Anyone with no underlying health conditions who doesn't want the second dose, fair enough. More for the rest of us who understand how statistics work. Pity you've wasted the first one though.
