May I ask what made you change your mind? My mother is still refusing to have the vaccine, her reason being the side effects from the vaccine. I have told her that the virus would be worse.

I self test 3 times a week so that I can visit but am still worried about other visitors she has who do not self test.

I've had the Pfizer, but all my relatives, except two younger teenagers, have had the AZ vaccine. Only my sister(76) had an adverse reaction and that lasted only 24 hours. She has since had a second dose with no effects whatsoever. Thank you, Bashful, for letting us know your decision and well done for making it. Fact is that we hear more about the thousands who have reacted badly rather than the millions who have had no ill effects. It was ever thus.

I do have a dear friend who had the AZ vaccine and was so poorly, her husband rang 111. A few tests found she had high blood pressure and she was prescribed medication. Later tests showed it was nothing to do with the vaccine but something else. She had no after effects at all with the second one.

Any worries always ring the doctor (as others have said) or even 111 as my friend did. She said they were brilliant and told her, her husband had done the right thing.

Then, I think a call to the surgery is in order to ask if a doctor or nurse could call her to put her mind at rest and get her booked in asap.

Vaccination means active work for your immune system, so it's to be expected you will feel less well than usual. The symptoms usually are brief and not severe. Take fluids, rest, and paracetamol.

Oh dear timetogo2016. I hope you get sorted out quickly.

I had my first vaccine and i was bad for a week or so.
Went for my 2nd and the damn place was shut,no txt, no phone call, nothing.
Phoned Gp and was given a number to call,which i shall be doing tomorrow.

I felt rotten the day after the first dose but had no side effects at all with the second dose. If I caught Covid it wouldn’t go too well as I have asthma so having the vaccine was a no-brainer.

First jab felt quite unwell for several days and dh the same. We were shivery, achy, had headaches and no energy. Very much like flu. The second jab not so bad and we just felt washed out for about 24 hours.

So Bashful try not to worry as your side effects are quite usual. Taking a couple of paracetamol can help and take it easy with a nice lie in. I hope you are feeling much better today.

Bashful all the side effects you had are on the list . I am one of those people who always read what side effects are possible. I had my 2nd AZ in May and only had a sore arm. With the first sore arm, headache and a limbs ached . But then again they usually do.

So glad you had your jab. The more people who do the better. But we can't let our guard down. I still wear my mask when out, hand gel often and keep my distance. Things won't get better until next year. I am not a pessimist but a realist .

People forget how long it took for us to get a flu vaccine plus all the other vaccines we have nowadays.

People are after a quick fix but diseases mutate so we must take responsibility for our actions and keep ourselves safe and in turn everyone else.

Since Covid there seem to be 2 camps the me me lot who do whatever they want and sod everyone else. And us sensible and caring group who follow the rules get vaccinated and do our lateral flow tests.

Covid seems to have brought out the best in the majority but of course it's the minority who get all the headlines and cause all the trouble. Bet they will be the first demanding treatment if they get ill.

Well done ! I can understand your reluctance to be vaccinated. I had the Pfizer and was fine on both occasions. My sister had Astra Zeneca had similar symptoms to you with first Jab but absolutely fine with the second . I think you have been very brave !

Most people I know, myself included, have had far less side effects with the second dose.

I had AZ with no problem at all with either jab.

I was also hesitant as I had just emerged from a debilitating 18 month flare up of an auto condition which had put me in hospital last year. I was worried my immune response to the vaccine could trigger another flare but was assured by specialists that it wouldn't. As I said upthread, no side effects at all.

I remember Jack Dee was on HIGNFY saying he'd started to wonder if he'd had the vaccine at all as everyone else he knew seemed to have suffered side effects and he hadn't. I was thinking the same, wondering if I was part of some covert placebo trial!

It can be offputting when all around are saying they felt ill for days. Most of my neighbours were complaining of arm-ache and/or feeling fluey for a while but they are perfectly fine now.

cornishpasty. I hope you can persuade your mum. If she can take paracetomol it might work for her too. Take one 500mg as you leave the surgery or vaccination hub and one ever four houses for the next 24 hours. Has to be better than catching the virus.

cornishpatsy - I don’t know how old your mother is. I am 66 and starting to feel miles better after taking paracetamol so will continue with it until side effects subside. Good luck in trying to persuade her.

cornishpatsy - I was frightened to have the vaccine originally because I suffer from food allergies, cosmetics, toiletries and household cleaning agents (which contain PEG). Because of the PEG I couldn’t take the Pfizer or Moderna but I was worried about taking the Astra Zeneca due to the blood clot scare.
However, after speaking to a very knowledgeable Covid nurse she persuaded me that the Astra Zeneca was worth taking and so far I’m glad I’ve taken the plunge.

I was very unwell for three weeks after the first AZ dose, but that did not stop me from having the second. I still was quite unwell, but not as bad after the second dose.

The alternative for me is much worse. Having the vaccine is a no brainer!
I have a history of allergic reactions to medication, so it doesn't phase me any more.

Don't let minor side effects put you off, Bashful. Better that, than catching Covid. Hopefully you will feel better in a few days.

Well done Bashful* MrJ had a very dry mouth after his first AZ, nothing after the second. My first Pfizer, no problem, the second I had a muzzy head for 24 hours, soon gone.
