The whole of New South Wales is now in lockdown

The whole of New South Wales is now in lockdown seems to have been interpreted by some into "the end of the world is neigh". It isn't. The "Whole of the UK" many other places have been in lockdown many times. There is an efficient vaccine available. I am not sure why the various states haven't got it out quicker but they will do.

I thought it was supposed to be the "poms" who whinged!

My little lot don't like it but know others have had both worth weather and worse living condition, i.e., they know they are lucky. The children and parents have had to have the tests several times already. The school has kept going while they were allowed to. They haven't missed anywhere near as much as children here or in many other countries. Now they seem to be away for longer the teaching is an online day for the senior school and online work (so far) for the junior school.

We need to send some of the Aussies a bit of our "stiff upper lipness". "This too shall pass".

They will have to open up their country at some point and what then? This virus is here to stay. We have to learn to accommodate it.

I don't understand Jacinda Ardern any more. Is she making political decisions or decisions for the welfare of the people? I know the two are interlinked but her actions are getting confusing. And why did she think they could dawdle with vaccinating?

maddyone my son and family live there and they’re not that happy with Jacinda who has been made out by the world to be a saint she is over reacting to lockdown (after one case) and totally under reacting to vaccinations (17% vaccinated)
They now have the panic buying ( where they live near Auckland) and said there is no meat / chicken and the dreaded toilet rolls on the shelves with other things in short supply but like Australia they tell me their hospitals would be totally inadequate for a big transmission
My eldest granddaughter is a teacher they haven’t been offered any vaccinations yet

The hospitals here simply won’t cope if we have a full blown Covid crisis like they did in New York and Italy. That is one of the main reasons we are in lockdown, though they don’t admit it. We haven’t got a very effective PM,sadly and he contradicts quite a lot of what the state premiers say. Nice enough bloke but the description ‘Scotty from Sales’ is apt.

Locking down is only ever a temporary and/or localised measure to reduce the initial impact and can never be a permanent solution.
I think it was Jonathan Van-Tam who said last year it buys breathing space to facilitate medical care and planning . I have thought all along that we need to combine lockdown in the short term along with vaccination and the same old health measures of Hands, Face, Space - not just one out of them all.
Eggs and baskets spring to mind.

My little seven year old grandson had to get a Covid test in New Zealand yesterday. My daughter and her family went to New Zealand to get away from all this. Seems Jacinda Ardern’s policy of zero Covid didn’t work. She should have put her efforts into getting her population vaccinated.

29% fully vaccinated here now. You know what, I believe they like the control of having us in lockdown, especially the Victorian government. A reason for the slow roll out ? * Conspiracy theory alert* ?‍?

My daughter told me that there are 31 Covid cases in NZ now, and they are all in strict lockdown till Tuesday now.

With New Zealand, shut up shop right at the beginning of the out break.
I thought good move only 5 million people But for for the life of me why on earth did they not get that vaccination program done.
Only 20 % vaccination rate they need to open the country at some stage obvious this would happen.
At least Australia is now pulling its finger out now and getting the population sorted. I have family in Australia who can't believe how slow the program had been.

Well approximately one fifth or 20% is improving nanna8 and I know you were one of the first to be vaccinated, but 20% is still not great, as I’m sure you know. But you must be pleased to see the numbers going up. I hope it continues for you.

The Australian vaccination program is ramping up now and I believe we have 5.5 million fully vaccinated now out of a population of 25 .5 million so still low but a whole lot better than this time last month. Bear in mind no children under 18 receive the vaccine yet.

New Zealand have just gone into lockdown for three days. I think even supermarkets have got to close. People are apparently rushing to the supermarket to get supplies before they close. They’ve got one case of the Delta variant, but have no idea how the man caught it.
My poor daughter and family, they went to New Zealand to escape this.
The authorities in New Zealand would be well advised to get with their vaccination programme. They’ve only vaccinated 17% of their population.

It doesn’t usually get that hot in Tassie-more like New Zealand. We lived there for a time, beautiful place. They have managed to more or less keep Covid at bay.Benefit of island living.

Try it for over a year as we did in Leicester. At least you've got better weather and can sit out in the garden.

Agree maddyone, it makes you sick. Desperate needy people are ignored but young, fit sportspeople can do exactly what they want. Personally I think they should get rid of the state government and just have Federal and local. It would save heaps and unite us as a country.

I don’t know how the citizens of Australian put up with such divisive rules, oh hang on, similar here in the UK. Sportsmen/women - free travel. Business people - free travel. Politicians - free travel. One rule for them, another for for us.

Obviously varies across such a huge country. My son is in Brisbane, he prefers the winter weather. 22 and sunny yesterday.

My GP told me at my visit today he had an older gent refuse to have any swabs up his nose because he thought there was a powder in the cotton and the government could spy on him if he used it and also refuses to have any vaccinations.
I've had my first az and am due for the second in a few weeks.
We are wearing masks in Southern Australia but have very few restrictions.
