News channels reporting with the increase of covid infections saying we should be all returning to face mask wearing...how do GNs feel if/when it becomes compulsory again?

Foxyferret Fri 22-Oct-21 22:35:00

Yes, haven’t stopped wearing them since so called Freedom Day.

I still wear one in shops and places like that and I still hand sanitise when I come out. It’s a small price to pay if it keeps us safe. I shall continue to be careful and cautious.

I am curious, do you not sanitise when going in?

bridie54 this is the mask pattern I like: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K4dH3-LHLQ
There are so many online to choose from of course.

bridie54 I've simply put an extra little fold at the base and stitched in place and also stitched a couple of little folds at the sides, feeling round the edges for gaps as I'm wearing it. This has made a better fit. I'm not sure if the elastic has 'slackened' a little over time in a couple of my masks, so have just tied a knot in the ties which has worked nicely. I have three layers, with a 'pocket' to renew the filter when necessary. All washable, which is said to improve their effectiveness.

Of course I wear a mask indoors always and on public transport - a proper medical grade one - anyone who doesn't is a selfish git and I hate them

Here in Wales it remains the law to wear a face covering. I live in a small seaside town and in the summer we have lots of (very welcome) visitors. However it was sad the attitude of some who refused to wear them on the grounds, “We don’t have to wear them where we come from”. I wonder if they feel they can insist on driving on the left in other countries because they do so in their own. The fact remains it is the law here wherever you come from.

I suppose they would do the same in Spain, or other places on holiday. But if they went to France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and most European countries, they would have to wear masks in public places, no question and no argument, and no exception! And to go into restaurants, cafés, theatres, concerts, etc, etc- they would have to show both their Covid Certificate of full vaccination AND identity. NO discussion !

Hi Kryptonite, am interested in knowing the pattern you use for snugger fitting masks. I make my own too with the metal nose piece sewn in place but any improvement would be great as I fully intend to keep wearing mine. Even more important now as DH just diagnosed with heart failure and vulnerable.

made me feel very old!

fairfraise Fri 22-Oct-21 20:48:23

I don't know what possessed me today but I went into the surgery and wore mask in an empty waiting room. When the doctor called me in I kept my mask on all the time. I don't know why. First time I've worn it with doctor in the room in that surgery. I should have just asked. Earlier in the day I'd seen 2 ambulance paramedics at home, without wearing mask. It made me very old! Excellent service from NHS Wales today.

I don't wear masks out now at all just a lanyard ribbon round my neck.
I do carry one though in case they were to insist.

Masks are mandatory in Scotland and the majority of people thankfully are wearing them in shops and other public places and still social distancing.

Tickledpink Fri 22-Oct-21 20:06:01

No I don’t wear a mask, I use the antiseptic spray on trollies and my hands. I keep safe distance from everyone. If someone sneezes or coughs I avoid them. This I will continue to do for the rest of my life, but masks? No.

knspol Fri 22-Oct-21 19:51:09

Ditto for my DH Isummer and we always wear masks whenever we go into a shop or any indoor space where there are other people. Rarely go out but have noticed we are definitely in the minority in this area.

bobbydog24 Fri 22-Oct-21 19:39:46

I’ve never stopped wearing a mask in shops and supermarkets. I sanitize the trolly and use hand gel. As soon as the government left it to the public to decide it was obvious mask wearing would be dropped. If I wear a mask and everyone else wears a mask, to my mind the virus has to penetrate two masks which I would doubt could happen. That’s my reasoning anyway. And all those people who think wearing a mask under their nose works, it doesn’t.

Kryptonite Fri 22-Oct-21 19:38:49

Not sure if this has been said already, but a third of us are asymptomatic, and so the non mask wearers could be merrily spreading Covid while they feel perfectly fine. I've kept my mask firmly on while all about me were 'losing' theirs, though finally our school has reinstated them. I believe it gives some protection to the wearer too and makes me feel safer. I have recently adapted my homemade masks to make them an even more snug fit. Wear it just about everywhere.

Yes I wear one and have finally learnt how to position glasses to avoid steam-up. It’s not that much of an infringement to freedom, is it? If it lessens cross-infection by a percentage, has to be worth it. Very tired of the conspiracy theorists and their so-called freedom fight. They are infringing on my rights to avoid infection.

francisdelima Fri 22-Oct-21 18:49:34

I never stopped wearing a mask in public, including in Church, supermarket etc. I have continued to observe other anti-Covid measures such as restraint on the number, frequency, etc in the company of many people especially in indoor, confined spaces and continue with measures such as hand washing frequently and the use of sanitising gel. My plea to people of all ages is to respect Covid, which has not disappeared and is returning apace after dwindling for a short while. Protect yourselves, especially if older and vulnerable and do everything possible PLEASE to protect others! God bless.

Sawsage2 Fri 22-Oct-21 18:28:25

Definitely. Stay protected.

Pammie1 Fri 22-Oct-21 18:27:07

I’m ECV, still wearing a mask and using hand sanitizer/social distancing. I don’t go out unless it’s absolutely necessary and still not keen on anyone coming into my home. Both myself and my partner have been very careful from the start, but he still managed to contract Covid from poor protocols on hospitalisation and passed the virus on to me. I caught it myself for a second time in July, despite being double vaccinated and can trace it back to a hospital out patient visit.

I think the government is taking a risk by not introducing compulsory measures by now, given the rise in cases and knowledge of how the virus behaves in winter. I also think mask wearing might be helpful in dealing with the other illnesses that circulate during winter, given that immunity levels will be low.

Urmstongran Fri 22-Oct-21 18:23:13

Covid death rates are 10% of what they were early in February.

What a hard decision! Do I take advice from esteemed scientists with years of experience and dedication or Two Wolves off of the Internet? Bit of a no brainer!

Yes I still wear a mask

Precisely !!

Kali2 Fri 22-Oct-21 18:14:55

As said above, so so much easier when it is mandatory- so simple.

Katie59 Fri 22-Oct-21 18:04:13

Just got back from shopping the number wearing masks was probably 10% far too low, the news on hospital admissions is depressingly high, expect more restrictions, including overseas travel, why would they want us?.

Greciangirl Fri 22-Oct-21 17:37:41

Yes, I never stopped wearing them.

They should make them compulsory again since infection and death rates have shot up.

Ignorant government dragging its heels as usual
