Is now the right time to lift Covid restrictions?

I can’t help thinking that BJ and his Tory cronies are lifting Covid restrictions to deflect the flack away from party-gate with no consideration for the health of the nation. It might give a boost to the economy but this will be short lived if the long term effect is an increase in hospitalisation and deaths from Covid. A gradual lifting of restrictions while keeping an eye on rates of infection would be far more sensible but wouldn’t be such a distraction from the lies and rule breaking that has been going on in No. 10. It’s a case of trying to bury bad news; bad news for Boris.

Infection rates are dropping but still very high.

This announcement is about telling the readers of the right wing tabloids that they can do what they like because good old Boris has defeated covid.

I just wonder whether they are still as guillible as they once were,.

Although numbers are declining, they are still at a very high rate. I personally think that the timing is to appease the MPs who are against restrictions full stop. It's part of the look how brilliant we have been message. This is not the time to through caution to the wind

Thanks kitty- not very good with the abbreviations on GN, so could not guess the 'dad' as 'dgd'. Wow.

No, it is NOT the right time- should wait till beginning of Spring- around Mid March if figures go down significantly.

No!

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 19-Jan-22 18:56:18

No.
I’m with the OP he’s trying to bury the (very) negative news.

But we aren’t fooled are we?

Omicrom isn't the only variant in circulation. Just been reading about a local teenager suffering with long covid who is now blind in her right eye, deaf in her right ear, covered in horrible lesions on the right side of her body, and in constant pain. Specialists have attributed all the symptoms to long covid.

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jan-22 18:37:23

Soon, but perhaps this could be too soon.

A hospital consultant (respiratory specialist) whom we saw was cautiously optimistic today.

I would like to see masks still worn on public transport and public places, as do the scientists but Johnson is not taking the advice as he would need to put it to the vote on the 29th and that could well see him embarrassed so instead he put our health at risk.

My grandson had covid. Totally asymptomatic. If DD hadn’t’ve done a LFT on him she wouldn’t have known. It’s also important, given that many children are being vaccinated, that they don’t have the virus when they have their vaccination.

I don't believe they are lifting them for the PM to gain popularity as, seemingly (certainly on here), most people would prefer to keep them. I think it's down to common sense.

Unfortunately, there isn't a collective interpretation of common sense. It would appear that some people just don't have it.

If common sense was as infectious as Omicron we’d be ok…..as it is sad

Calendargirl Wed 19-Jan-22 17:59:48

I don’t agree with Esspee that reporting LFT is a faff.

I find it quick and simple, takes just a couple of minutes.

MayBee70 Wed 19-Jan-22 17:57:37

I’ve just emailed the health secretary and accused him of doing this to protect the PM and not the people of this country, whose health he is responsible for. I know I’m not in his constituency so don’t qualify for a response but I’ve said that I want a response from him. I’m furious.

rosie1959 Wed 19-Jan-22 17:55:27

I was glad that they changed the rules regarding reporting much easier not to have drive and get a PCR to tell me the same thing. Will everyone report their results you could ask would everyone go for a PCR is they were inclined not to bother about Covid
We have recently had quite a few cases in our town and I know several who have been affected. The rates are now dropping but nobody I know has had severe symptoms if any at all.
We cannot yet say how rates or symptoms will be in March as Omicron becomes the dominant variant but we cannot go on isolating by law indefinitely.

JaneJudge Wed 19-Jan-22 17:50:15

We have covid in our house atm and I am going to work, as from today. I am the only person in my house to test negative by lft and pcr (yesterday) the guidance is to lft for 7 days so you continue to go to work. My husband and son have isolated as positive but we don't have a very big house so can't really isolate and tbh I have given up sad I wore a mask at work, washed hands, stayed away from people as much as possible.

PS I rang work to explain our situation and they wanted me to go in

MerylStreep Wed 19-Jan-22 17:50:01

Yes.

growstuff some people just don't have it

What? Are you including the scientists, that people here quote ad infinitum, and who have backed the government on their lifting of restrictions?

shysal Wed 19-Jan-22 17:04:17

I shall certainly continue to wear a mask no matter what Boris says!

aonk Wed 19-Jan-22 14:44:31

I think it’s all too soon. I’ve also read that from March those suffering from covid will no longer have to isolate. The thought of someone with covid coming into my home or sitting next to me in a cafe or bus is unacceptable.

Esspee Wed 19-Jan-22 14:40:57

First you change the rules so that a positive LFT doesn’t need to be followed up with. PCR test.

Then, unsurprisingly, PCR test positive results drop dramatically. Even if they are counting positive LFT it doesn’t take a blind man and a donkey to know that very many people do not report the results of their LFT as it is such a faff.

Anecdotally I have never heard of so many people currently having COVID. What about you?

It is most certainly NOT the time to lift the COVID restrictions. We are being manipulated.
