Can’t believe we’re starting another thread.
Although many of us have been chatting since the start of lockdown, we’ve been lucky to welcome others who have joined in more recently.
Anyone who wants to pop in for a chat is welcome.

Good morning, on this bright dawn…finally. It appears that the storms have moved away from Kaimoana and me, up here in the northern regions. Not without causing disaster on their way through-4 people were drowned when their fishing charter vessel foundered up the coast from here. Such a tragedy for the little seaside village of Mangonui.

Nfk your trip on the Broads sounds amazing, despite all the hiccups. Such lovely country around Walsham…such a beautiful county, all round. I hope you get the heater sorted – it would make such a difference to your comfort at this time of the year. I thought the same about the Dean’s chicken run! Why is it that my girls make such a mess of their residence? Your cormorant is lovely-very handsome, and I thought, showing his best side to the camera.

Doodle -Do you have your blinds up and running now?? Please send photos! I love the image of you talking to your artificial plants! I have a few Ikea plants with my real ones in the dining room, and left MrJ in charge of watering the real ones while I went to Australia to see the DGCs. He watered the lot. I agree with you about Welsh choirs, especially male voice ditto. MrJ always speaks of magical Sunday evenings with the Welsh uncles, with wonderful names such as Aneirin and Dai, all the men singing in perfect harmony. Then he discovers that he’s actually far more Scandi by DNA than Welsh…a crisis of identity!

Grammaretto It sounds as though you should be charging Sparky rent! He seems to have moved in as a permanent resident, after all these months. I’m sure it will all be worth it. Cushie continues to prove her worth as an Official National Treasure. She should be setting up her own agency, and training her employees in her own exacting standards. The continuing cheek of people in your garden! How tolerant you are. Great to have people enjoying the beauties of nature around your place, but smoking in your garden?? (shudder). Your barometer sounds very interesting. Do you know much about its history? You are brave to drive at night, especially in winter. Just suddenly, I’ve found the prospect very daunting, though until 2 years ago, I commuted from the Far North to Auckland every week to work, down on Sunday evening, back on Friday, arriving home at 10 pm after a 4-hour drive. Then I discovered the Intercity bus service – curled up in a comfortable seat, listening to podcasts…bliss.

Yesterday, I had my painting group and the history group, about Women and Medicine. Very interesting. It’s a pity that poor old Florence is still remembered as the lantern lady, soothing brows, doing what women allegedly do best, rather than as a feisty, highly intelligent mathematical genius, inventor of the pie graph, administrator and ordered mind par excellence. Today my French group, and it’s going to be a beautiful day, 25 deg, fine and sunny, so we’ll sit out in the garden with cups of thé, chatter and giggle.
I had a M&S delivery yesterday, in a rumpled, crumpled green bag, with DHL “repackaged” tape on it. Everything inside had been taken out of their plastic and screwed up in a heap. My lovely linen shirt that I’d been looking forward to looked like a dishrag, and was covered in black ink stains! Just why?? Also included in the parcel, mostly socks, tights and knickers for DCDs, was a really weird two-piece outfit, bright orange, shorts and a strange-looking top, not M&S, no labels, probably homemade. Just what??So disappointing about the shirt. Socks too small for Bigfoot Freddie, so Gubbins will receive a parcel very soon.

Dove and pals are perched on the guttering, where they can peer down at me, demanding breakfast, and Doreen has one eye glued to the dining room window, chattering something about food. I am summoned.

Have a lovely evening, everyone.

Doodle Wed 23-Mar-22 21:50:39

I have my new blinds installed. Yeah. Now I can play till my hearts content, up a bit, down a bit, stop. ? The ones in the bedroom and bathroom are coordinated so that they can all go up and down at the same time. Now all we have to do is not lose the control
Grammaretto I really hope Sparky finishes soon. You need your sleep. Yes I can remember him being with you quite a while ago. It’s about time he finished.
Hope you had a nice evening with df and Cushie. Did Cushie cook one of her meals?
Is your garden very open, can people just stroll in when they we feel like it? Cant believe people take advantage like that.
Oooh I will read your DGS story in a minute. Well done to him.
Yes Sahara sand. Quite a lot round here. Most of the cars are covered in it. If it carries on like this we will have enough to make a beach in the car park………anyone for a paddle?
Boadicea I’m sorry to hear that. The storms must have been really bad.
I will post pictures of the blinds tomorrow when it is daylight. I am pleased with them.
We had a lot of male singers in our family too. Dai is a common name in Wales but none in our family.
Hope you had a good time with your French group. Such a shame your blouse was a disappointment. Will you send them all back?
Doreen sounds a feisty piece ?

Doodle Wed 23-Mar-22 21:53:57

Ah the link wasn’t the story but about the competition. What a great idea to get the children's imagination working. Your DGS did well Grammaretto

BoadiceaJones Wed 23-Mar-22 22:49:49

It's not just crumple...it's M&S crumple (not their fault though, really. )

Grammaretto Wed 23-Mar-22 23:29:42

Hello again gang,
Sparky is still here (he did go home just before midnight yesterday but came back this evening) He thinks he may finish in the next week or so. Hmm.
Meanwhile the rest of the house is quiet. It was busy earlier today and tonight the 3 of us cooked a dinner party for ourselves and Df's DS who hit it off with Cushie. They both seem to like the same music.

How exciting to have your remote control blinds Doodle!
and conversing with and watering the artificial flowers . I'll bet they reply gently. BJ too!

I think can send the story to you Doodle another way.

Grammaretto - well done to your DGS! Sooo impressive!

Grammaretto Wed 23-Mar-22 23:50:41

what a dreadful condition for a parcel to arrive in Boadicea Jones

BoadiceaJones Thu 24-Mar-22 19:10:56

Good old M&S came to the party and gave me a refund, even for the items that weren't damaged, and which I insisted I'd pay for. That's service for you.

Doodle Thu 24-Mar-22 19:16:07

Boadicea that’s package is in a dreadful state. Something bad has happened. I hope you’re going to get your money back.
No probably not their fault but the carriers.
Grammaretto are you sure Sparky hasn’t got a crush on you. He seems to like being in your house.
That’s nice your friends son and Cushie get on. She seems a much better fit for you than the rather sad Colleen (was that her name ?)
We went out for lunch today with DHs old school friend and his wife, we get on well so had a most enjoyable time other than I think I was sitting in a draught and now have a pain in my left ear. It’s happened before so it will probably wear off later on.
Yes the blinds are a big success. They are quite plain but that was intentional as I want to add splashes of colour to the bedroom duvet etc without it clashing with the curtains.
I will add photos one showing the voile underblind (think net curtain) then the top blackout blind and the more colourful one is the kitchen blind.
Despite saying I would take photos in the daytime I didn’t manage it so you can see the lights through the voile one.
Oh thank you. I will see if I can read the story.
Take care all.

Doodle Thu 24-Mar-22 19:16:57

Boadicea your second post crossed with mine. That is good news. Glad you got your money back.

Doodle Thu 24-Mar-22 19:21:51

Just read your grandsons story Grammaretto it’s very well written and he certainly has a way of drawing you into the story. Well done to him.

Kaimoana Thu 24-Mar-22 20:32:07

Those blinds look gorgeous and very tasteful Doodle.

I too get a stiff neck or ear if I've been in a draught, especially as a passenger in a car when the driver opens their window.
A hot-warm water bottle helps (no, I don't mean to throw at the driver!)

We call it a 'hottie' in NZ but I could be misconstrued if I say 'A hottie on my neck helps' grin

Glad to hear M&S did the Right Thing BJ.

I used to love their prawn sandwiches but can't see them surviving the post.

Still 21 degrees at 1 am - not that I'm complaining but I do wonder if this presages a cold winter.

I think we should have a Lobstar Gang party when Grammaretto finally gets ALL the work done.
all right Jeeves, settle down, yes, there may be hotties present wink

CherryCezzy Thu 24-Mar-22 20:41:12

I enjoyed your dgs' story Grammaretto, it's very evocative. He painted such a vivid picture, I could see it all. It's a difficult talent, one he clearly has. It's no surprise that he won a prize. I just wanted to let you know that I loved it.

Thinking of you all x

Doodle Thu 24-Mar-22 21:50:24

Hello dear Cherry. Nice to know you’re still around and popping in now and again. We still miss you.
Hope you are keeping well and your Tigger tail is glossy and firmly attached. Take care x
Kaimoana I call it a hottie too. It’s better now thank you.
Yes I agree we should have a kitchen warming in Grammaretto’s kitchen when it’s finished.

Kaimoana Fri 25-Mar-22 06:53:51

Hi Cherry smile hope you are well and rested and looking forward to Spring-Summer. flowers

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb - but only up there where you are changing to a softer season.

Here in Aotearoa, it comes in like a pussy cat at the end of Summer and is currently going out like a flippin' Tyrannosaurus Rex!
Nearly got blown over by a hurricano when I went shopping.

Grammaretto Fri 25-Mar-22 08:17:03

Hello Lobstars,

Hi Cheery we miss you here. sunshine smile Hope life is going OK and that your team is winning. I must pass on praise to DGS. We all need encouragement. I had a thankyou post card from him yesterday for the books I sent for his birthday. Heaps more birthdays coming up.

Kaimoana I always forget about the upside down weather . We chose May to go to NZ in '97. Luckily it was sunny and mild but every day was a bit colder. I call it a hottie too though at my boarding school it was known as a pig. ( a hangover from when they were pottery and looked pig-like).

Cushie wants a bonfire today. My garden wasteland has too much wood for her to cope with. So we may do that. It should have been the memorial service today so a fire could be appropriate

The blinds look very nice Doodle. Can you post your blind man to me?
A kitchen warming would be fab but who knows when that will be. Sparky didn't come yesterday. Df thinks he is an artist. She was pointing out his pencil lines on the wall - carefully lining up everything.

Please come to the kitchen warming - everyone.

Doodle Fri 25-Mar-22 20:23:05

Not the best of days today. Worried about DGS who has some troubles. He’s been through enough already so just hoping he will be ok.
Kaimoana I can’t believe it is so windy where you are. I thought you would be having sunshine. Please don’t get blown away. Is your DGS coming over this weekend?
Grammaretto that’s nice to get a card from your grandson. He should be pleased with himself.
I have never seen a pottery hottie. I have a rubbery one with a fluffy cover. Nice and cosy.
I’m glad you and Cushie are getting on well. How long is she with you?
I wish I could post my blind man but I think he’d get stuck in the letterbox.
Your Sparky does seem to work some strange hours but I hope he’s good at his job.
Take care all.

Kaimoana Sat 26-Mar-22 03:30:48

Apologies Grammaretto I've been meaning to add my congratulations to your talented DGS. Another fine work.

Doodle we get an average 2,010 hours of sunshine every year; even if it starts dull, it nearly always gets sunny.
However, in amongst all the sunshine we have these wild spells of unruly weather.

The Crystal Waka "Guide Kaiarahi" was installed at Auckland War Memorial Museum and that sunshine made it all the more stunning.

The designer doesn't mention the hard-working Australian crew who actually took 2 years to make and put this together.
He only got to see it recently. hmm

The prophetic ghostly waka seen in 1886 a few days before Mt. Tarawera erupted, was witnessed by many Maori and a party of European tourists.

No dgs here this weekend Doodle. He's been at camp all week and he's exhausted grin I may hear about it all next Friday.

Where are all the LobStars? Hope you are all well and just too busy to post.

Doodle Sat 26-Mar-22 21:49:43

I’m here Kaimoana although I’m heading off to bed soon as I’m very tired. Didn’t sleep well last night.
Went for a walk this afternoon and it was so warm. Got back quite exhausted.
The Crystal Waka is beautiful. It looks lovely in the photo.
What an interesting story about the phantom canoe and the eruption. Thank you for sharing the links.
Hope all the gang are doing ok.
Well I think I must be more tired than I thought. I was just going to comment that I hoped your DGS had a good time at camp but I’ve just re-read your post several times and can’t see mention of it. I must have been dreaming ?

Doodle Sat 26-Mar-22 21:50:47

Ah there it is, a second post. I wasn’t imagining it. Hope that he had a great time and has lots to tell you when he sees you next.

BoadiceaJones Sat 26-Mar-22 21:52:01

Good morning everyone, on this beautiful autumn day. I'm taking a break from the garden, as I have sweated perspired so much that i need a litre of water. Actually, I was so upset about a Youtube clip of an incident involving Russian tanks that I had to get out into the purity of nature. The sheer awfulness of this war...

That article about the waka is fascinating, Kaimoana, thank you.Yes, a clergyman tourist in the canoe party wrote home to his parents about seeing the waka before the eruption...the letter was postmarked before the event. When I was in my teens, I was privileged to chat with my grandmother's old friend, whose family farm was up in the hills looking over the volcano. She was only 5, but her father took all the children to watch the eruption, in the middle of the night. . That was 1886 - so long ago,and yet so recent.
I hope your DGS had a wonderful time at camp and came back unscathed. He will have so much to tell you next weekend!

Doodle - sorry to hear about your DGS's troubles. I really hope all is well for him, and for the family. Grannies just need to be there as a shoulder, don't they. Are you still enjoying driving your new blinds? Have you challenged MrD to a race yet?

Grammaretto - lovely that you had a thank you from your DGS. These manners seem to be fast disappearing. I wonder if Cushie had her bonfire? Has Sparky been there today?

The nice man at the garden centre has recommended a soil treatment which involves building up the micro-organisms which become depleted after heavy cropping. You have to spray it on damp soil, so I've been busy sprinkling the ground and applying the stuff. I inadvertently pulled out a kumara plant while I was weeding yesterday...the one vine had 15 immature sweet potatoes on it! This warm autumn means i can get another crop of potatoes in. I can't believe that the newly planted passionfruit vine has flowers on it! I don't think we'll get any fruit before winter, but as we don't get frosts here, you never know. I thought I'd pop another avocado tree in the chicken run, but when I saw that they now cost $60, I changed my mind. Nursey plants are ridiculously expensive since the pandemic.
Right, off out again into the sunshine. Have a peaceful and pleasnat day/evening all. x

muse Sat 26-Mar-22 23:12:42

Good Evening all Lobstars ?.

The sun for the past week has one more day in Cornwall but how I have enjoyed it. Eating outside is such a delight. I have set up an old table on the new veranda and even though I have to carry a tray over from the cottage to the build, it is so wonderful. My excitement grows as we hope to be able to be signed off by the building inspector at the end of May or there about. One last hurdle is the plumber. A 2nd one has let us down so Monday I am on the phone again to find a third. I am a tad busy Kaimoana but the occasional chill time has been programmed in. As soon as we have something to cook on, a basin or sink to wash in and a toilet to !*!* in we shall move in.

Four weeks on Monday Mr and Mrs Muse take off for our four days on one of the Isles of Scilly. I might have mentioned this before - once or twice. ?

That chugging along sounds delightful NfkDumpling Hope the boat yard have sorted out the heating. I hope to find my sea legs when we are away and take in a tour around the islands. We will have just missed the low tide between Tresco and Bryher. For about four days, you can walk between the two islands and lots of activities are planned on the sands.

Grammaretto Thank you for the link to the stories. Such creative youngsters. Well done to your DGS.

Very pleased to read that M&S came forth with the refund + extra on top. BJ Excellent customer service. Will you attempt another order for the linen shirt?

I look forward to a video chat with my DD tomorrow and I have been very naughty and just opened my cards from DD and DS. ☺️

We have a few clocks to adjust tonight but I might just have an extra hour in bed in the morning to make up for it. Hope you sleep well Doodle.

Good to see Cherry. Thinking of dear Panache. Hope we hear from her soon.

Take care dear Lobstars.

Kaimoana Sun 27-Mar-22 06:13:12

I thought of you the other day muse when I was reading about Barbara Tribe, the sculptor-artist. The article about her was on a blog names Cornish-muse. smile

You really do need that break in the Islands and the ideal book to read as you relax in the sun is "The Life of a Scilly Sergeant" by Colin Taylor.

BJ I've just chopped 3 of your chillies into an omelette and forgot to rub my hands with oil afterwards, so I also stung my eye a bit sad

My DS and wee Gubbins are coming for a visit tomorrow. I'll make the eternally popular crumble for dessert. Apple, peach and sultana this time.
