It shouldn't be a question of 'winning' based on public opinion.
Has it not occurred to you that it was different groups of people complaining about those things?
Unless you only go by the media, especially newspapers, which seem to be in continual outrage about whatever is happening.
It should be a question of balancing up evidence and making a sensible decision.
Which doesn't seem to have been happening at any point in this UK Government.

All restrictions to end?
(259 Posts)Well, so that's then. Luckily there's not tens of thousands of daily infections and several hundred people a day dying. Oh, wait a minute.. ....
I apologise if my bleary eyed post at 7.35 am sounded as though I approved of young people going out after having tested positive. What I meant was I don't blame them if they need to go out to take a child to school or nursery, to buy some nappies or to actually work. Some people have no support, so no choice.
Will there be some people who maliciously spread it?
This comment here, however, did unsettle me. Why would anyone do that?
I have no comment to make about posters leaving. Other than to mention Alegrias herself berated an innocent poster last year saying, "we do not talk about posters who are no longer posting on Gransnet". So I'm therefore guessing that any discussion about her reasons for leaving on here will be counter productive, (if she is reading).
In the UK before covid, I never saw anyone wearing a mask.
What did the vulnerable do about all the other airborne viruses that would be dangerous for them to come into contact with?

I’m with Alegrias regarding inaccurate postings, it does wind me up when people don’t check the facts before they post. I’m sorry they’ve both gone, opposite ends of the political spectrum but Gransnet would be very dull without the cut and thrust of debate (I agree, I also also prefer it with some humour Callistemon21, life’s too short )
I agree, GN will be a different place without them both. Lemongrove and I had our spats over politics, and undoubtedly I wound her up as much as she did me, but she also showed me great kindness on a thread about a personal matter. I agreed with the irritation Alegrias showed about inaccurate postings; we are all entitled to air our views, however different they may be, but we do have an obligation to ensure we are not spreading malicious rumour, the Johnson/Savile case being an example. If you are reading this Alegrias and Lemongrove, please come back when you feel ready to do so, GN misses you!

It wasn’t you Calistemon! Alegrias simply got fed with inaccurate postings etc plus some very anti Scottish stuff I think. However I feel both she and lemongrove gave as good as they got at times !
Yes, I know really Lucca, I think I was the final straw.
I've never knit a pair of socks in my life either.
Sorry to revert to this, but I think it's a bit hypocritical when posters who preach about 'insensitivity' on other threads defend their own insensitivity by saying that it was just a bit of fun.
The proposal about the doors was true, though.
Now the Education Secretary is backtracking.
It was a lie that I am knitting thousands of pair of socks.

Sorry, MaizieD but you are altering the course of events.
No-one made personal remarks to Alegrias before she flounced.
The whole proposal by the Scottish Government was so ludicrous that it was ripe for ridicule.
It was the proposal that was ridiculed, not any poster.
It must be insensitive to criticise any Government, then. We must watch our step not to say anything about other politicians.

Well, perhaps this covid episode might cause people to stop and think that mask wearing to mitigate the effects of other airborne viruses, as is commonplace in some other countries, might actually be a good idea to adopt.
For instance, flu might not have the same long term ill effects (paper just published of US research finds that people have a high incidence of cardiovascular problems of they have had a covid infection) but it's a killer. Should we just carry on tolerating 'normal' flu deaths every winter or try to do something to protect the vulnerable from dying?

Hypocrisy is when those who have caused several posters to leave Gransnet because of their unkind personal remarks start criticising those who said a thread about the SNP's daft proposal was fun.
I hope I have always been polite.
I had hoped that people in this country would have learned from eastern countries where people suffering from a cold wear masks so as not to pass their germs onto other people. But, alas, we still seem to have a ‘I’m alright Jack’ attitude. Not only that but there still seem to be people making fun of those of us that still intend to wear masks (I’m referring to another forum that I’m on where there’s no empathy for people that are high risk).
^Sorry, MaizieD but you are altering the course of events.

Alegrias pointed out several times that the 'proposal' you were all mocking wasn't actually true but you all persisted in posting your 'fun' posts as if it were. I call that insensitive. It was unpleasant.
And one poster even made a point of saying that they were laughing at all her posts trying to make this point. I'd call that ridiculing the poster.
And if telling off a poster for 'insensitivity' on another thread for making a passing slightly derogatory reference to an MP's surname isn't preaching I'm the Queen of Sheba...
MayBee70, all the Asian students on the Uni buses that pass here, wear masks. The rest of the passengers, student or not, -it’s hit or miss.
The local supermarket still asks everyone to wear masks and all the staff there, except those on the hot food/delicatessen counter wear masks. On those two counters, a lanyard stops the staff from spreading any potential germs.

But it was true!!!

Are you pointing at me, Callistomen?
Because if I have been the cause of any poster leaving no-one has ever told me. And, from my experience of Gransnet I'm sure that there would have been a big rush of posters delighted to tell me about it.
And if telling off a poster for 'insensitivity' on another thread for making a passing slightly derogatory reference to an MP's surname isn't preaching I'm the Queen of Sheba...
oh, for fuck's sake!
It was puerile and detracted from the important message the OP was posting.
I'm not arguing with you any more but I will say that I find it ironic that you accuse other posters of unkindness and insensitivity.

It wasn't true. You all latched on to the 'sawing doors in half' absurdity and off you all went.

I which case you should have ignored it, not made a big issue out of it. There wasn't much concentration on the 'important issue', was there?
I'm not arguing with you any more but I will say that I find it ironic that you accuse other posters of unkindness and insensitivity.
Well, we're quits then...
In my opinion there was a ganging up mentality towards Alegrias on that thread and the more upset she got the more mocking people became. And I’m saying that as someone who has locked horns with Alegrias on many occasions. Even a strong minded person like her can only take so much. And still no one seems to be looking at the remarks they made and questioning whether they did take things too far.
IMHO I don’t think the flounce was down to anger, more like embarrassment.
It was because the SNP were being mocked, not Alegrias.
I speak as someone she has agreed with sometimes!

100% correct
In my experience Alegrias always gave at least as good as she got and was well able to look after herself. A lot of posters are harangued for their political views.
I think for some posters it isn't just one thing that causes them to go but disenchantment over time. The next thing that comes along to irk them and they're gone.
Some posters seem to make it their aim for the day to argue all that day!
IMO. Oh and they love to call out others if they argue back!
