Perhaps this is a way out?

Yes maybe.
This is being discussed on the other "Biden to Stand Down" thread:

I've had this latest variant. It was so mild I wouldn't have tested if my friend hadn't phoned to say she had it, and as we'd been out for a meal with her a few days before. I just thought I had a summer cold.
But yes, he has a face-saving way out now, if he wants it.

ExDancer I am pleased to hear that your recent bout of Covid was mild.
However that's not the way it is for everyone.
A member of my family has recently been very ill with Covid. It's the fourth time for her. Her first round of Covid was extremely severe, painful and debilitating.
I have had Covid twice and been quite ill and feeble for weeks afterwards. My neighbour a man in his forties has been off work for eighteen months since having Covid and is still very unwell.
I wish President Biden a speedy recovery. But like many people, I also hope Covid will be the catalyst and that he will stand down whilst retaining his dignity.
