Re jokes, as far as I'm concerned a joke is a joke is a joke. If its bad taste is for a purpose – and most humour is to get a point across, often a tabooed one – then good for bad taste.

What is wrong with me? Having got over Mother's Pride, I now find that Old Pride reminds me of Old Spice.

Friend and I in a pub were once asked if we were lesbians. I was about to answer no when my friend said: Just say yes; it'll shut him up. It did. That was "bladdy hell Jimmy" – posh colonial accent from his family estate in Malaysia (wh he still called Malaya!) in a village pub in W Scotland.

As for the jokes, well just as Jews tell the best Jewish jokes, and the Irish tlell the best Irish jokes, I suppose it is up to us, but what I
deplore is the self-deprecating nature of many of them. Try substituting Jewish/Irish/Gay in an ageist joke and see whether you think it is still acceptable.

Ladies, as a beer drinker, can I point out to you that Old Peculiar is a trademark and the other bit that reminds you of beer is London Pride (a Fuller's beer).

I have been conducting a one-woman campaign for a long time to reclaim the word old. I don't do Facebook or Twitter so would not be part of this plan, but I wish you well.

gracesmum You referred earlier in the thread about "ageist jokes", I see where you are coming from but as most of us are older, we are the ones that should be setting the ageist joke agenda.

There was a whole american TV program ?called Old Jews telling jokes (often Jewish jokes.)
There was also a radio and later a TV sketch show ?Goodness Gracious me"? with a lot of top Asian actors and comedians generally joking without any malice about how other Indian subcontinent immigrants behave in the UK. We need an older persons version of the same.

Perhaps until older people feel happy doing these jokes we will not be mainstream.

The US photographer who took the photos published a book, Advanced Style last year, which I bought and I have since been interleaving it with pictures I see in newspapers and magazines of older ladies with style, Edna O'Brien at 80 with flame red hair. About two months ago Princess Lilian of Sweden died at about 97. There were pictures in the papers of her in her early 90s, immaculately coiffed and made up with a suit a women 50 years her junior could have worn.

What I would really like to do is ban the use of the term granny or grannies as a term for describing older women. The BBC is particularly bad, you know the sort of thing 'Don't go there it is fully of grannies drinking tea' or some such comment.
