I don't watch TV and I usually only listen to Radio 4 four so I accept that I'm slightly out of the loop when it comes to modern music. However I was online yesterday and I spotted a link to a Beyonce music video. Now, call me naive, but I was intrigued and surprised by the fact the song (it's called Partition) was labelled 'explicit' and so I clicked on it to see what the deal was - and I was genuinely shocked at the content, both in terms of the video and the song lyrics. I mentioned this to a friend yesterday, as she's the mother of two teenaged girls, and asked her if this was an extreme example of what's going on in the music industry. She told me that Beyonce is mild compared to some and directed me to go home and watch a couple of videos by Niki Minaj - and check out the lyrics.
Oh. My. Gosh. !!!!! shock shock
Talk about explicit! Violence, Sex, Drugs - it's all there with bells on.
I am so glad that my grandchildren are not yet old enough to listen to this stuff.
Is it just me who was ignorant of this stuff?

For those of you who are brave enough:
here's a video link
and here are some of the less shocking lyrics

Luckygirl Thu 08-Oct-15 11:19:43

It is just as well you posted the lyrics as I could not hear a word on the video, and am now quite glad I couldn't. It s pathetic stuff. Let us hope that our GC have the wisdom and guidance to see this for what it is - porn.

Incidentally a school in this county - I will not mention its name, but DEFINITELY NOT the one where I am governor - staged a fund-raising Ladies Night organised by the PSA (that is Parent STAFF Association) which consisted of a male stripper, who did not confine himself to merely undressing - I will say no more. Pure pornography, organised on the name of supporting primary age children and with the blessing of those staff members on the PSA. Would you want one of these teachers to be influencing your child's moral compass and possibly teaching them about sex and relationships? - I know I would not.

shockI hate that sort of hypocrisy Lucky.
Just imagine the outcry if a PSA had organised a female stripper.
Why do some women think it's ok to objectify men but come over all outraged about women being objectified?

Will pluck up courage to look at your link later ga
As you were.

Jon Lajoie does some excellent satirical parodies of rap music.

I should have pointed out that the lyrics are from a different 'song' as the ones from the video are much worse.

Lucky - I do think it's a minefield as if voices are raised in opposition to such things then the objectors are accused of being prudish, moralistic etc. But without a doubt I WOULD have objected to such a fundraising scheme if it had been mooted at any school I was associated with.

Mary Whitehouse got a bad press, but I think maybe she saw the slippery slope.

What would happen if one of us danced down the road singing shouting, 'Nigga, nigga, nigga?' hmm

Luckygirl Thu 08-Oct-15 15:25:35

I would be happy to be regarded as prudish by objecting to a male stripper masturbating at my table at an event in aid of a primary school - no problem for me there.

Maggiemaybe Thu 08-Oct-15 15:43:18

Good God. shock shock shock shock.

The above applies to the lyrics and Luckygirl's post. And the still of the video link - I didn't feel the need to press play! Perhaps a little lie down or a watch of the latest episode of Downton might be in order. Pass the sal volatile. grin

Luckygirl Thu 08-Oct-15 15:45:02

Oh yes indeed - a shot of Downton, or a quick look at a Miss Read book - ah, that's better!

grannyactivist Thu 08-Oct-15 16:56:27

I must admit that since watching the video I've been listening to a CD of Russell Watson singing 'naice' songs just to get the images out of my head. blush
I do find it very troubling though that many girls of 14-16 who listen to and watch this sort of thing then learn the words and practice the 'dances' in front of younger siblings who want to copy them.

downtoearth Thu 08-Oct-15 17:58:22

I love Miss Read...

Alima Thu 08-Oct-15 19:16:59

I love the way some of these threads end up about something completely unrelated to the original subject! I enjoy Miss Read too, must go back and re read some.

Nelliemoser Thu 08-Oct-15 19:52:27

luckygirl was there no further adverse reaction from others at the school about having a stripper. IMO it is totally inapropriate to have that in a school.

Luckygirl Thu 08-Oct-15 21:35:18

It was not in the school in fact but in the local village hall. I still regard it as being totally inappropriate as a means of raising funds for a primary school - and have concerns about the teachers who enjoyed it (and indeed helped to organise it) who will be influencing young minds on personal relationships. It was not even a light-hearted stripping but seriously hard core. I think it is dreadful.
