Having read the thread on hymns I wonder if we might enjoy a good virtual sing together? There'd be no one to complain or overhear us individually 'gieing it laldy'. We could choose a hymn/song and set a time to start. Me in my small corner...
When this thread started I suddenly thought of "Button Up Your Overcoat" as husband was going out. I played it on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvzLoMb6l7k
I was once in a choir and we sang When Father Papered the Parlour lemongrove. It was many years ago. We did an evening of Victorian songs. One was especially melancholic, The Long Day Closes, right up the Victorians street. I had a good voice once, not so much these days though.
When my mum was in hospital we were chatting about when she met Dad and they danced to 'Autumn Leaves'. I burst into song, 'When Autumn leaves drift by your window....'
'You've always liked that song, haven't you Mum?' I said.
'I used to!'
We played it at her funeral. No I didn't sing it but it made me smile!
Elegran. GN organised a sing along at Christmas 2011 - we sang Oh come all ye faithful, turned on our web cams and all appeared by magic on the screen. Dozens of ladies of a certain age all warbling along together. I remember late DH cringing in the corner of the kitchen as I joined in ?? We should try it again. ?? GN ??
I know masses of music hall songs, and they act as excellent lullabies - I serenade the DGC with a quick burst of 'Burlington Berty', 'Daisy Daisy' or their favourite 'Don't Jump off the Roof Dad' - and off they go to sleep (and yes, my whole family tells me that it's to escape...!)
DD2 normally tells me not to sing (for good reason lol) but she says I make it through "Stately as a Galleon" as per Joyce Grenfell so I'd give it a go :-) I'm brave enough you you ladies are :-)
Jesus bids us shine, With a pure clear light, Like a little candle, Burning in the night. In this world of darkness, So we must shine, You in your small corner, And I in mine.
You brought back memories of Sunday School, Jane10, though some of the words of this, I now realise, are a bit grim for tinies. The next verse talks of 'sin and want and sorrow.'
Gosh Gaggi, that brought back some memories, our local Methodist ministers used to set up at the bottom of our road. They called it Sunshine Corner and I used to trot along, this is one of the songs we sang, I was about 4 or possibly 5. I don't think I've heard it since.
I know a song that'll get on your nerves, get on your nerves, get on your nerves. I know a song that'll get on your nerves and this is how it goes (repeat ad nauseum)
Love to join in but ... when I do have occasion to burst into song, DH often remarks 'can you sing over the hill and far away?' the farther away the better!
