The suggested format is that this is a discussion thread about the places along the route, links allowed in moderation, any food mentioned is vegan. Sort of like a treasure hunt for information, yet no teams, people sharing what they find.

Here we are in Kitzingen.

LINK > Ein Besuch in Kitzingen A visit to Kitzingen (19 minutes 57 seconds)

The commentary in the video is in German. Even if one does not understand German the video is, in my opinion, well worth watching.

Bellanonna Thu 28-Jul-22 10:58:20

I’m not a contributor to this interesting thread but I did enjoy the tour of Kitzingen and understood a fair amount of the commentary, which surprised me. I then Wiki’d Kitzingen and it has an interesting history. Named after a shepherd boy apparently.

I will watch some other links both out of interest and to help with my German. Thanks for putting them up.

MawtheMerrier Thu 28-Jul-22 13:17:43

Lovely, thank you!
I didn't understand it but that didn't matter at all.

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 15:52:12

Hope you are all raising a glass of FRANKEN wine which comes in bocksbeutel ( like Mateus bottles) www.vogue.com/article/franconia-germany-wine-region-travel-guide
Delicious dry wine and Kitzingen has wonderful bottles!

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 16:08:38

That is beautiful!
What a marvellous picture.

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 16:20:56

MissA I have a loyalty card at the wine cooperative in Kitzingen and our car’s boot always came home with a lot of glass! It is hard ( and expensive) to find in UK as the Germans keep it to themselves ?

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 17:07:56

Ah, I don't drink, but it sounded pretty tempting, even to me. smile
Were you a regular visitor then?

Bellanonna Thu 28-Jul-22 17:11:01

Thank you for the cerebral exercise Maw, but I won’t expose my German to a fluent speaker! I had to look up Erfrischung !
Vielen Danke für die Antwort.

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 17:15:59

Every year Miss A for about 35 years! The river here Main loop or Mainschliefe is worth travelling on from Volkach ( I know we’re not quite there yet) it is central for journeys to Switzerland or northern Germany…….beautiful towns and villages, good food and lovely apfelschorle for those who don’t drink!

Lovely, thank you!

I didn't understand the German either.

I have picked up a little German over the years, mostly from watching German volksmusik on television in the 1990s and early 2000s and more recently on YouTube videos.

It quite strange really. I understand something, then the next bit I don't and so on. Sometimes I get an idea of the possible meaning from a few words that I know.

For example, in the video of the Rhine journey that I posted yesterday, starting from

LINK www.youtube.com/watch?v=gooHjUvXV_A&t=90s

I understand the first sentence, but then I don't understand.

> Ahoy, and a cordial welcome dear viewer to the Rhine.

However, I can sing this song and understand its meaning, as I looked it up, and learned it.

Here is a link where I understand some lines of the songs but not others.

LINK > www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jtmc3GkmVu8

And here is one from earlier in this virtual cruise - I looked up the meaning. smile

Thanks, eGj smile
Wow, every year!

Mind you, we went to cornwall every year when I was little.

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 17:52:39

I tried to cheat and turn on the subtitles to that last song, Stardreamer but alas, it translated it to Spanish and I don't understand that, either.

StarDreamer Thu 28-Jul-22 18:38:15

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 18:40:35

Are you up to something? smile
Are the lyrics funny?
You do make me smile.

Volkach is not on the mp that I have been using.

LINK > Map

Yet I found it using

LINK > www.google.com/maps

So, eGJ, we can stop at Volkach.

On the map that we are using, Volkach is at the far right end of that tiny loop that goes off to the east then back from some way north of Kitzingen.

Are there any overland side trips that you suggest please for when we are moored at Volkach please?

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 18:54:04

Ooh good!
We're going then. smile

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 18:57:47

We might end up going round the world.
Seeing all it has to offer from the comfort of our chairs. smile

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 19:12:20

Volkach itself is charming and we can visit
de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_im_Weingarten a lovely walk before drinking Franken wine ( or apfelschorle)

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 19:15:55

The most important item is the Rosenkranz Madonna which is beautiful and hanging from the chancel arch. ( carved in 1520s)

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 19:19:05

Oh brilliant!
Thanks for that.
I love seeing those types of things - there are so many, too, in Germany.

Like the stuff of children's books when I was a child.
The buildings remind me of the pictures in 'The little match girl", which my aunt bought me.

eGJ Thu 28-Jul-22 19:20:48

g.co/kgs/9SdWsg see the nature reserve and the grapes!

MissAdventure Thu 28-Jul-22 19:57:18

I'm sure we will.
I'm just a lazy, but appreciative passenger.
stardreamer is the brains behind the operation and planning.
Strange - I was listening to madonna when you posted that word, and was eating grapes when you posted that word. smile
