Joe Lycett

Joe Lycett has apparently shredded £10,000 of his own money as an objection to David Beckham’s involvement with the Qatar World Cup. Makes me sad to think what good could have been done with this money.

Oh I agree it's his money to do with as he wishes.
I'm just not comfortable with the blackmail aspect. I wish DB hadn't taken the money to promote them, it's not as if he needs another £10 million, but then again I would have preferred our whole England team had shown some principles and refused to take part in the tournament. Every single person that participates whether in the audience or on the pitch is supporting Qatar's world cup. Sporting boycotts are effective, and this would have been huge had many countries joined in.

Yes, I agree that this has shown FIFA in a very bad light. There should have been a sporting boycott, but IMO it should have been led from above, not left to individual players to make the decision about whether to play. They only have a small window of opportunity to play at this level, and I could understand if some of them felt they had to. Ambassadors are a different matter though - I have no patience with that.

I'm not sure that the stunt was blackmail, although I can see that it came close. Beckham could have stepped down (I assume - he may have been tied into a contract with penalty clauses) or offered to match the money by paying to gay charities himself. Or even made a grander gesture and offered to give his fee instead. Obviously he shouldn't have to, but it would have changed the narrative to how generous he was and secured his ongoing status as a gay icon.

Beckham should pretend to burn some of his money, just to show how serious he is.

So glad I can go back to liking Joe Lycett.
Incidentally a rerun of the Sewing Bee when he was link man is on BBC 2 this afternoon.

Kate1949 Wed 23-Nov-22 09:54:09

I'm sure Beckham doesn't give two hoots whether he's a gay icon or not when he's counting his £10 million.

Callistemon21 Wed 23-Nov-22 09:57:08

You don't know what David Beckham is going to do with the money.

I'm astonished at some of the comments on here.

Doodledog Wed 23-Nov-22 09:57:22

Oh, I don't know. He gets very well paid for posing for photos on the cover of gay magazines, and for endorsing products that attract the pink pound.

£10m is a lot in a lump sum, but it is a one-off, as opposed to the longer term income he gets from his 'gay icon' status.

Kate1949 Wed 23-Nov-22 10:27:49

True. We can only go by what we see as with all celebrities. They put themselves out there and attract praise and criticism. That's the way it is. I'm sure Beckham has done a fantastic amount of charity work. However, his children have been given jobs on the basis of their parents' fame. I know many celebs have done this but some people won't like it. Rightly or wrongly.

Doodledog Wed 23-Nov-22 10:32:26

It's hard to even imagine weighing up a £10m contract as an ambassador against a lifetime (or decades anyway) of highly paid work as an icon, isn't it?😂

Kate1949 Wed 23-Nov-22 10:35:19

Not a problem I'll ever have to worry about Doodledog!

Callistemon21 Wed 23-Nov-22 10:37:05

I'm good at daydreaming. Not that I could ever be an icon.

How would I spend a huge Lottery win?
Well, first step is to buy a ticket!

HurdyGurdy Wed 23-Nov-22 11:35:29

Whilst appreciating your willingness to undertake so arduous a task, I feel, to spare you from further pearl clutching, I should direct you to "Attitude" magazine 😉 😆

HurdyGurdy Wed 23-Nov-22 11:38:36

My above comment "lost" the quote from doodledog, sorry.

Callistemon21 Wed 23-Nov-22 11:38:59

I need to smarten up my act 😀

Today I'm not even iconic Granny, more bag lady.

snowberryZ Wed 23-Nov-22 11:43:46

He sounds like an attention seeking idiot. These people will do anything for publicity.

snowberryZ Wed 23-Nov-22 11:47:15

And I don't know who he is, as I refuse to worship at the alter of celebrity.
If we all stopped talking about and following 'celebrities' they'd soon disappear.

Here’s another of Joes successes.
The Hugo Boss name change.

HE DID NOT SHRED THE MONEY! It went to charity
He shredded magazine covers of David Beckham but it did look like he had shredded the money

He was a talented footballer with 115 caps for England.

Elegran Wed 23-Nov-22 17:09:53

The talented footballer is Beckham (I am assuming that snowberryZ doesn't know who either character in this drama is) Joe Lycett is a noticeably gay entertainer who is less famous that Beckham. He has a self-deprecating sense of humour, which is displayed on his official website at joelycett.com/pages/about

MissAdventure Wed 23-Nov-22 18:33:41

Beckham does a fair old bit for charity, too.

I'm not sure how it all falls on his shoulders that the uk has ties with these countries.

It always has ignored the human rights side of things, when it suits.

Glorianny Thu 24-Nov-22 10:57:04

The responsibility is his for accepting the huge amount of money he is being paid by Qatar.

MissAdventure Thu 24-Nov-22 10:59:18

All of the responsibility?

Should he do it more cheaply to show his disapproval?
