Exercise log - all welcome - any fitness activity, please post it here
(226 Posts)I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.
Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.
I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).
Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed -
, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself.
Granb
Thank you for the kind thoughts. You are so right gracesmum -you do suffer twice over. I had no conception.
Anyway.... done for today. Stopped off at sister's on way home from bike ride - unfortunately coffee only and no cake
.
Tomorrow I will mostly be wearing padded pants!!!!

- so sad
I did 4.5 mile walk on the South Downs today. Lots of steep hills which really made my legs and lungs work. Such a beautiful day too, bright sunshine and temperatures around 16°c. Dog is happy as well!
I managed a two hour walk over a mountain pass today, with sweeping views across Lake Geneva to the Swiss Alps. It was hard going on the packed snow, but much harder on the soft snow where nobody had walked. I had to be careful as my walking poles sank in up to the hilt. There was not another figure in the whole of the huge landscape - I felt I was the only person in the world. Of course, when I got over the mountain to the ski slopes, there were hundreds of skiers and cars parked everywhere. I will be glad when they all go home and leave me in splendid isolation again.
Granb, what a sad start to the year.
And you are doing so well, taking positive action. I hope you will get some of your strength here on GN - at least our cakes are virtual...
jeni Are you able to use your WiiFit since your accident.
Last week I heard from a friend in Clevedon that a friend of hers with arthritic joints has bought a mini-trampoline with rails to hold on to and she reckons it's improved her mobility immensely.
I've asked her to get the details.I might consider buying one.I have osteo-a in rt knee and now affecting hip and lower back.It started with a fall 3 yrs ago whilst on a health walk!!
Alternatively have you thought of getting a 'personal trainer'. My daughter (S.R.N) later went into fitness training.
She now trains trainers as well as doing classes in Pilates, aerobics etc.etc. and does home visits for people unable to go to gym.or with special problems
She lives in Cheshire but may know of a personal trainers network or someone she could recommend -did much of her training in SW.
You might get a dishy young man to brighten your day!
maniac
I don't think impact exercise would help my painful, partially fused ankle much!
I have bought a wii and just need someone to tune it in to my hub. Hopefully that will be tomorrow, then I can exercise using the balance board while holding on to a zimmer for balance!
I don't think I could deal with a young man these days!
However, a wealthy very old man with a bad heart and clean habits?
Granb so sorry for your loss. Condolences from all of us at GNHQ
Sorry about your loss granb ... but well done with your charity endeavours ...keep us posted!!
Did another walk (felt like a marathon) today, mainly because baby gd was screaming for England! It was very drizzly,we got soaked while she slumbered away in the buggy!
I must admit I was nearly on my knees when we got home but at least I did it!
Hubby, daughter and I shared the cost of the Nintendo WIIFit Plus instead of buying Christmas gifts in 2009. I didn't think it would appeal much to me but the games needing skill were fun.
I tried the jogging and could only do 10mins at first but I gradually built up to 30mins then 60. These days I can manage the whole 3hours- but usually stick to an hour and a half EVERY day.
I went down from 9 and a half stone to 8stones which is my ideal weight for 5feet and BMI 22.50. At 69, I feel about 18 and very well and fit.
I recommend the WII to anyone. While, I'm jogging I can switch to the tv and usually watch yesterday's Countdown and Italian football on tapes. It's my routine and I'm a stickler to it. Hubby does the cycling game because he enjoys that. He's fit too but 30 year old daughter hardly uses the games but has bought the Just Dance disc as that's her hobby.
GranB I am so sorry what a terribly sad time for you all I do hope you are finding some solace in raising funds for the charity.
Did my first full 18 holes of 2012 yesterday in practice for the first spring Medal (you have to do every hole and put out its exhausting but its how your handicap is determined). I was completely cream crackered even my trolley battery ran out. I hope I build up some fitness before the season gets really under way. I get so frustrated when my back (arthritic spine) and my hands let me down - the arthritis seems to clamp them into a claw half way round. Had a big shout in a buncker - no one else around to hear my breach of etiquette except DH who tried not to laugh!
That's what I'm hoping to do Susie, build up my fitness levels again. Went to my exercise class this morning and felt a bit looser thanks to the walking I think.
I have osteo in my knee and now my hips are getting painful, but I really would like to tighten up my tummy muscles a bit more.
Went for a walk with dd and8/12 dgd. First walk I've done for ages! Suffering now but it was such a lovely day and gd loves being taken for a walk. Went to the lake grounds to see the ducks!
sylvia1231 - I'm really impressed. I have never been able to run/jog at all. Well done, I envy your self discipline
I feel inspired by this thread today. Haven't done as much exercise as I usually do and beginning to feel the difference - so now all the snow's gone there's no excuse for delaying any longer.
Granb - What a great challenge. Hope you keep us all informed of how you're doing. Takes guts.
I've decided on a walking regime to help build up some stamina but important to be realistic I think so I am going to start from tomorrow (going to a wine tasting today) a three mile walk around our town and park which I can start and finish at my house so no car involved. Let you know how it goes.
That sounds like a good idea susie. I stroll round my park and am near enough to home that I can finish at my house without trudging back exhausted. It helps to have a dog charging round and taking me on little diversions.
I feel quite inspired by you all - today I have blitzed my bedroom ready to start decorating - exercise of sorts. From tomorrow I shall start going for a walk during my lunch break - will only be round the estate where I work but it's a start.
Granb, I'm so sorry to read of your loss and in admiration of your response.
I strode off into the wide blue yonder of Melton Mowbray today. I just wore some old combat trousers, a t shirt and a microfleece and some old trainers I found under the stairs so no cost involved. DH clipped a pedometer to my waist and off I went down the road up the hill, puff puff, kept up a steady pace , swung arms after a little while, over the bridge round the park and back home 4500 steps 2 and half miles, mildly out of breath and much warmer than when I stared. No-one stared at me, I wasn't followed by stray dogs barking or press ganged into the while slave trade( feared by DH who said 'you must take your mobile'). Only damge was I had very frizzy hair when I came back. So I will do that again add a bit more and make it 3 miles then 4 then 5 about three times a week I think.
Thank you so much everbody for your kind words - you have no idea how much they mean.
Have kept to it and darling OH has also been out on bike with me. He cycles 20 miles every day so trundling along behind my huffing and puffing for 5 miles was a bit of an ordeal for him. Weather has been so good for last few days (glorious, glorious) that think this was a help. This morning not so good but still dry and mild. No real test for the old resolve yet. Timing runs start on Thursday. Youngest son is IT teacher so may ask him to get his class to design me a progress programme so that can see where I am.
I do envy all you who live with hills or mountains in walking distance - we have the Quantocks and the Mendips within driving distance but would just love to have them or something higher a bit closer.
Have skiing trip coming up in two weeks so also need to do some proper leg work..... just hope have not left it too late. Have been looking at Matt Roberts' exercises as they seem to incorporate fitness as well as strength building although wonder if anyone knows of any effective moves (preferably ones that do not involve sqatting, lunging, standing against walls for minutes at a time etc, and that will make me look good on the slopes!!!)
You really do have some resolve Granb. The progressive way you have been working towards this challenge is impressive, especially under the recent sad circumstances.
