If it happens again Elegran I will shout and scream at the top of my voice! I didn't realise at the time that it was so serious - it was only when it swelled and bruised overnight and I had trouble even hobbling about that the penny dropped. I did go to A&E then but there's not much to be done for a broken toe - just strap it to the next one to help it heal straight. I was also told it can take up to 9 weeks for the bone to fully heal.

Yesterday, hours walk around Greenway again plus hours gardening.

I have started 'exercise by referral' which is a system by which Drs or Practice nurses can send us off for assessment and appropriate exercise in council run facilities.
The group I am with is superb and the 'coach' very good indeed at targeting just what each of us need.
I have also gone back to table tennis (I used to be county standard) now the glue has set on my second hip

Wish I had time to exercise, but if I'm not pushing the GC into town in the twin buggy (uphill) or lifting them in and out of the car or carrying them up and down stairs, then I'm in the garden or walking the dogs.

I went for a 2 hr walk with my dogs this morning. Nice with some exercise and fresh air!

Hour and half gardening this morning. Back aching but plants in and weeds out. Potting up done - spuds planted and - yes - they are chitted. (love that word)

I joined a Health club with 'gym'n'swim' facilities a couple of months ago. Following the discovery of a serious health problem with DH, I needed to do something for myself, so that I could be in a more upbeat state for him. My main aim initially, was just to get there as often as I could during the week, but I've been amazed at how much I've enjoyed it. I hadn't been pushing myself at all but after finding that a friend does an incline of 11 on the treadmill [I thought I was doing ok at 2, then 4], last week I did 20 mins at an incline of 6. Don't know if that means anything to anyone - it's my first time going to a gym, but I'm going to get to that 11. Saw her on Friday and she's now on 12. Grrrrrrrr!
Thought if I had to record progress on GNet, it would make me stick to it and push myself a bit more. I do about 20 mins in the pool after, but I'm probably the world's worst swimmer. With stops and starts at each end, I do about 8 or 10 lengths. There's a lot of effort but very little speed or style, but I do love being in the water. Must say though that I always leave with a slightly smug smile on my face and a mental pat on the back.

Six mins on exercise bike. Really struggled on that as hip was whinging. 20 mins on treadmill then 10 lengths in pool. It isn't a full size pool! Also sat in jacuzzi for 10 mins. I think that can count as exercise, the way that my thighs wobble around in the water. Good job no one can see them in all the bubbles.

I tried a Body Attack exercise class today. I guessed I would be the fattest and the least fit, but that was not so. I was, however, definitely the oldest by about 40 years (I am 67)! The lively music made me want to be energetic, and the choreography was simple , so I absolutely loved it, it was like coming home. I can now say goodbye to the Primetime (over 50s) classes which I have been trying and found not to be challenging enough. Examining the timetables for 4 local leisure centres I can fit in 4 or 5 visits a week, so exciting!

Body Attack, Shysal ? That sounds a bit scary. What's it all about?
Did my stint in the gym and pool and this time braved the Steam and Sauna rooms. First time! I don't understand what the attraction is in them. So hot and so much dense steam in first room, that it took me a while to realise I was the only one there. Very boring on your own and I couldn't work out how long I'd been in for. Might give it one more go.

Missed nearly a week as we were away. Did 15mins on treadmill at incline of 7. Then 5 mins at 6 as hips were protesting.

As you can see by my username I`m a cyclist and have been for about 35 years, it`s the best exercise in the world too! Anybody else cycle on this forum? At the moment I cycle between 300/450 miles a month.

Crazycyclists - wow! I am just starting off cycling again. I used to ride with my husband and then when I had my knee replaced I found it difficult. I started again last year, then had an operation to have my gallbladder out and stopped. Today was my third attempt so far - only eight miles (it was going to be more, but towards the end I caught the tyre valve with the bottom of my crop trousers, and yanked it out - cue flat tyre.) My DH goes out cycling every Friday - Northumberland where I live has a huge number of groups who go out together; would love to be able to join him, but they are doing about fifty miles at this time of year and I think it'll be a while before I get there!

Aka - pushing a buggy uphill with two gc sounds like pretty good exercise to me!
Flower - be warned, walking can become extremely addictive - I really feel turgid on any day when I can't get out for at least an hour or two, but not this week as even walking the 100 yards from my hotel room to the beach is tiring - I am in Egypt.
I was swimming with fins for several hours yesterday, and my calves are like a rugby player's today. I didn't realise how much more efficient it is because it feels less effort than swimming without them, but of course you are displacing much greater amounts of water with each kick.

Has anyone tried water aerobics?, I retire next Sept and would like to give it a try, after 40 odd years truck driving, the knees ache a little with arthritis, and I think this would be a more gentle exercise, than some that are around..

I know I'm stating the obvious here but it's easy to get dehydrated when you swim [not going to happen to me cause I can't swim and, if I did I doubt if I would do it vigorously enough to dehydrate!]. I knew a lady who had osteoparosis [sp]. She swam right into her 90's and died recently aged over 100. I think it is by far and away the best form of exercise if it suits you. Go for it, berdie .

I tried Aqua-aerobics, in our local pool, a few years ago.
The water was freezing so we all got cramp! When asked why the water was so cold the then manager said it was because the water polo team had used it before us and they mustn't have the water too warm!!!! Of course they were mostly men, we were mostly women!
I didn't know water temps over such a large volume could be controlled to such an extent and presumed the water was always on the cool side.
I dubbed them.... 'The Brittas Empire' anyone remember that prog?
Tegan I joined aqua-aerobics because I can't swim and thought it a good alternative! THe exercises were great.... the water wasn't!!!!

Any gentle exercise is good and swimming is perfect, especially for people who have problems in walking very far.

Thanks Tegan & * Oldgreymare*, You have convinced me to try it out. I only hope there isn't a " Brittas " character at Brighouse pool when I go, although do you find they have jobs in Local Authourity offices.

Oh I'd forgotten about Brittas. Sometimes find myself watching a bit of Red Dwarf when I'm channel hopping only to realise I don't find it funny any more [but I think that's because the jokes outlived their shelf life].

I started learning to swim 18 mths ago and it is GREAT !! 20 lengths this morning which is the most so far. I can only do back stroke and front crawl as breaststroke b**** my knee. Not sure that I will ever become dehydrated Tegan as I do seem to swallow a great deal of water !
My goals now are to relax more and do more than one length without stopping to gasp for breath.

You're not a million miles from the Richard Dunn centre in Bradford berdie they do some great deals for over 60s..... here's me presuming that you are in this category..... what a cheek!

berdie, in my area there is an option of Aqua Zumba which is a bit more fun than the normal water workouts. Depends what floats your boat!

Swimming is good, but it's not a weight bearing exercise. Get a dog and walk it.

shysal lots of things float my boat, but we won't go there this early in the day. Aka, I did have two black labs, but unfortunately we've lost them both. However we have a friend who is a dog walker, so we can help her out.
