I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.

Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.

I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).

Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed - grin, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself. smile

Swept up a barrow load of leaves and deposited them on compost heap up the garden (today). Shot twenty arrows into a target, also up the garden, and retrieved them in four arrow 'ends'. Up, down, up, down.

Helped move 1200kg of logs into the woodshed, the scullery, the kitchen and the sitting-room (yesterday). DH said our sitting-room looks "right rustic". Sorted for winter warmth though.

Scythed the front bank. It's steep, about a 45° angle. So tricky (day before yesterday). Did not rake up scythings. Am going to let the worms deal with them in situ this year.

Bags ...be kind to yourself. We care about you. smile

I've walked in the sunshine and pedalled for 20 mins [until legs felt like knitting] on my exercise bike...the one that goes nowhere fast. grin

absentgrana Wed 10-Oct-12 15:07:22

That's one better than me soop. I go nowhere slowly on the exercise bike. grin

Bags Wed 10-Oct-12 15:08:41

Don't worry, soop. Knitting legs, eh? That's impressive!

Butternut Wed 10-Oct-12 15:22:35

Okay, Bags, I should have said, woolly-legged. grin

I live in the centre of a smallish market town and catch the bus to the country club where I am member of their leisure club. I often see sheep, cows, horses and rabbits, as well as numerous birds as I walk up the lane from the bus stop. Today I saw a very lively hare and a grouse while on my way. After that, it was down hill – well, uphill on the treadmill – with seriously concentrated exercise.I know what you mean about woolly legged soop.

This will sound very keen. I'm jogging more or less every other day for another charity Half Marathon. Jogging started after a chat with my doctor about cholesterol in 2006 but the charity running began when my inspiring (but tragically late) niece found she had a brain tumour at the age of just 25.

I go from quite fit to just fit enough to run a race slowly. Now, I'm back up to training 10 miles on Saturday hopefully. All of this does very little for my weight. Cutting calories for 9 months chopped 3 stone off me but jogging is about fitness not weight loss. We did the 10 Mile Astro Walk on Sunday and it used up 950 Kcal - one good dinner perhaps but less than a tube of Pringles.

Fartlek, by the way, is from the Swedish, meaning 'speed play'. As mentioned above, it involves a repeated running and walking. It's supposed to increase speed of distance runners but I only use it when I'm out of puff in a race.

I saw an 84 year old man interviewed about his marathon running. 84 is a long way off for me but I'd like to keep going as long as I have the legs, and as importantly, the mind to run.

go to acquacise tues and thurs just got in, puffed out was different lady!!

OH Got me monthly membership so can go often as I like but twice a week is about all I can fit in!!

Woody Wed 07-Nov-12 16:04:32

About a month ago I started aquatone once a week and also went to active retired session at our local leisure centre. Over two and half hours you can play either badminton, short tennis or table tennis split into sessions of 20 mins each. I have never played short tennis or table tennis before and badminton not for 20 years but finding it very enjoyable. One question - how long will it take before I am not absolutely shattered and ache in all sorts of places(!) for the remainder of the day? I dare not sit down - I might never get up again!!

absentgrana Wed 07-Nov-12 17:56:32

I couldn't get to the gym in time this morning to do the cardiac-vascular bit before my aquarobics class started. Got to the class just in time, but afterwards, instead of swimming a mile – my daily swim – I swum a mile and a half. Then I went Christmas shopping. Gosh, my legs ache!

janeainsworth Wed 07-Nov-12 18:03:39

My legs ache too.
The day's exercise consisted of walking about a quarter of a mile from the canal boat to the pub, having lunch and a pint, and walking back again grin

absentgrana Thu 08-Nov-12 10:02:16

Janeain But it's bracing your legs firmly so that you don't spill the pint that takes it out of you.

celebgran Thu 08-Nov-12 11:14:09

awful lack excercise as have been ill since Mon with throat/cough but hope get up to speed next week as have 3 clients also!!

janeainsworth Thu 08-Nov-12 11:21:36

Yes it was tough absent. Arm muscles felt it too, repeatedly raising the glass to my mouthgrin
Making amends slightly today, have walked a mile along the canal and am about to do some vigorous carpet cleaning in the cabin.

exercise is so hard to start.. I ran a 20k (well jogged slowly) race last Sunday and frankly was SHATTERED at the end. Disappointing as I thought I had trained well - it was very hilly race and in the pouring rain. What one needs is other grans to run with I think. Training on ones own is difficult.. and training with girls 10 or more years younger dispiriting? any thoughts from other granny runners?

JessM Sat 17-Nov-12 16:40:39

I am incredibly impressed gramsiesue. That is a very long way.
Maybe if you are retired or partly retired, join your nearest u3a and find some other people in your age group to run with.
I would like to run but it seems to give me back pains etc - am going for the lower impact walking very quickly with weights in my hands option at the moment. Arms getting firmer by the week.

crimson Sat 17-Nov-12 16:56:38

My knees have been so painful recently that I've hardly had any exercise at all. I'm on my feet all the time at work and I think that's what's causing the pain. The dog is going on her hols next week so I may try some walking with my walking poles; I feel bad going for a walk without her when she's at home and it's impossible to walk a dog on a lead with a pole in each hand! Also going to dig out my pilates dvd although it did look very boring when I last tried it [a long time ago!].

Mamie Sat 17-Nov-12 17:02:20

Dug out stones, shovelled, barrowed and spread gravel. New path almost done, so daily logs can be hauled up from log store without walking on grass.
No time for exercise!

celebgran Thu 22-Nov-12 14:04:25

went acquacise but cancelled so did swim few lengths must admit was chatting lot too as a friend was there!!

isthisallthereis Thu 22-Nov-12 18:59:31

I have a replacement knee and hip also a spinal problem and my consultant approves of me going to a keep fit class three times a week he says it helps to strengthen my core. I really enjoy it as we work to very cheerful and melodic music, I hate the gym it bores me rigid and I really look forward to my classes and feel a lot better for going.

annodomini Sat 13-Apr-13 21:04:50

I had planned to go for a swim today, but found when I got to the club that there were swimming lessons on in the roped-off lane and more and more kids and parents came into the rest of the pool, so I gave up after 7 lengths, did some aqua aerobics moves and then had the jacuzzi all to myself.
