So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Anya, you probably used more energy than on a walking day. Standing uses plenty of calories! Hope the party went well. flowers

Don't hang your head Purple and well done on today.

I'm tempted not to post as I'm horrified with todays 1090. I spent most of the day preparing food for a family party. And by the time everyone went home tonight I was to shattered to go for a walk. Just goes to show though how few steps we can do if we don't make the effort to get out and about sad

Have kept my head far down in shame this week as I was rarely over 5000 most days. I blame it on doing the bidding of others rather than what I want to do. However, today I stamped my feet (10,000 times apparently) and walked everywhere despite DH worrying I would get wet. Does he think I'm made of icing sugar and will dissolve ? grin I am in total awe of you ladies who manage this every day. flowers to you all.

Feeling quite chuffed with myself. Totted up the number of Km I have covered in the last week and found that I have walked the equivalent of the distance between my Oxford village and Heathrow (60.5 Km)! That is nearly 1.5 Marathons. Sounds impressive for an OAP doesn't it? smile
You must all have similar or bigger totals, so congratulations to all! Cari is probably doing a Marathon a day by now! sunshine

Managed 12,724 yesterday. I think the only water to be watching today is the rain, which has just started and is forecast for most of the day. I will walk to the library then go to aerobics this morning. Will see how the weather goes this afternoon. sunshine (Wishful thinking).

Such a lovely day here, so it was lovely to walk home from coffee with friends, and then out again in the afternoon. 10304 today for me. Yesterday spent with granddaughter, so only 7932!
Suspect poor weather due over weekend, so will have to make more effort. wink

I can recommend the sitting by the river approach to fitness Anya however too much sitting all together for me today so only managed 8765

TerriBull Fri 03-Oct-14 20:17:35

8,600ish for yesterday and so far today 10,743.

Anya Fri 03-Oct-14 19:57:00

A good 10,000 plus yesterday and a pathetic 5700 today. I think I'll go and find a river tomorrow and just sit and watch it flow. It's very soothing.

shysal Fri 03-Oct-14 16:22:43

Chloe grin

chloe1984 Fri 03-Oct-14 14:58:50

Have to say it was very nice like to take a selfie at each place we go send it to DDs who like to see how we are spending their inheritance!

shysal Fri 03-Oct-14 09:03:23

Sitting by the river sounds idyllic Chloe, including the ice cream! Hopefully this spell of nice weather will make the winter seem shorter .

chloe1984 Fri 03-Oct-14 08:45:26

Only 5824 for me yesterday spent a lot of time travelling to the shops well my DH always insists on travelling the scenic route! And did spend a lot of time sitting by the river eating ice cream don't think that helped.

11,821 for me yesterday. BLT class this morning will take care of about 4,000. Making up the rest is less daunting than a whole 10,000 on non-class days.

Anya Thu 02-Oct-14 09:44:42

12,127 yesterday, my best yet, but my knees and ankles are shouting NO this morning.

TerriBull Thu 02-Oct-14 09:06:16

Just topped 13,000 yesterday, due to an unexpected longish walk to pub yesterday evening for a meal with extended family. Not so sure I will do so well today.

chloe1984 Thu 02-Oct-14 08:43:22

10277 for me yesterday off for a browse around some shops so hoping to reach 10000 today.

shysal Thu 02-Oct-14 07:52:51

10,842 for me yesterday. Ramblers' 5 mile walk today, around river near Abingdon, should cover today's quota.

shysal Wed 01-Oct-14 07:58:34

Yes,*Anya*, a pat on the back for all! sunshine

Anya Tue 30-Sept-14 23:15:14

Haven't we all done well wine

Nanabelle Tue 30-Sept-14 22:41:58

A good day for a few of us today - probably the lovely weather helped. We have been walking around Wisley today and managed 11734 - but at quite a dawdling pace!

Anya Tue 30-Sept-14 21:47:01

Yipee! 11,532 today smile

TerriBull Tue 30-Sept-14 21:07:39

11,,237 today.

chloe1984 Tue 30-Sept-14 20:14:42

10351 for me today am happy that I have managed that as didn't think I had walked that far really.

Gracesgran Tue 30-Sept-14 16:40:13

I am so impressed by those of you who are reaching the 10,000 and more!

It is the Tanita shysal and obviously the alarm is a wonderful idea - I just wish I had read the instructions blush. I like the fact that it says "hello" to me each morning too ... but I am easily pleased.
