So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Why don't you tell us how you are doing yours Jingle, and how you feel afterwards.smile
I have several circular routes in or near my rural village which cover different distances, or sometimes I park somewhere and walk to a shopping centre. On one route through a country estate, it is the cows (bullocks!) who look out for me and one particular grey and white one follows me closely every time. I usually feel energetic afterwards, but yesterday, after mowing my steep lawn in the evening, my hip became painful. Annoying!

Where is all this walking done? Do you roam the countryside watching out for cows and hoping you can find your way back, or do you walk round the block/garden/kitchen table listening to Ken Bruce Radio 4 on headphones?

And are you able to do anything more in your day once the walking is clocked up?

Thank you for your good wishes it is a little easier today so am venturing out for a walk to town and to my weigh in at my slimming world ( after a very good holiday!) so will see how it goes.

I'm very much with you on the jumping jacks!!

shysal Tue 23-Sept-14 08:51:53

Cari, I have been trying to cure a knee injury for nearly a year by using it a lot - it hasn't worked yet, still aches all the time! The only thing I hold back on is jumping jacks in Body Attack class, so do vigorous half ones.

11,460 yesterday. Our club is slowly growing, even Jingle mentioned elsewhere that she is trying it, bet she is lurking.smile

chloe1984 Mon 22-Sept-14 20:10:50

Only 7689 for me as most of the day I have been doing housework and reorganising the furniture etc after being invaded by family at the weekend.

Iam64 Mon 22-Sept-14 19:14:40

Been away, and did 11,000, 12,500, 14,000 and 12,000. I'm delighted, and my feet seem to be coping, with the help of anti inflammatories. Only 6,000 today, but lots of washing of windows etc, so done my bit.

For the last few weeks I have been wearing a Fitbit Zip, which is a wireless activity tracker. It syncs automatically with my phone and tablet, tells me how far I've walked, how many steps and also calorie intake and outtake (which I haven't bothered about at the moment)

Does anyone else have one of these?

Not so sure about being a spring chicken anya - lots of gransnetters younger than me and many more around the same sort of age smile

So wasn't sensible and did hard classes on Thurs and Fri and ankle ached after...and now is completely fine again. So cured by use it seems (or possibly by sticky toffee pudding - hard to know so I'd better experiment a bit more...)

10,000 steps usually takes me about 90 minutes, spread over 2 or 3 walks, starting briskly but flagging towards the end of the day! I am fortunate to have nobody else to worry about, so can give it priority.

tanith Mon 22-Sept-14 10:23:34

I'd like to join in but I really don't know how you all find the time to do over 10000 I manage 5000+ on a good day and thats fitting in a 40 min walk and another of 20mins I feel as though I am 'stepping out' not just strolling and I wear my pedometer indoors too although i sometimes forget to put it on. 10000 feels like an unobtainable goal to me.
Maybe my pedometer is faulty hahah thats my excuse! Its finding the time I find difficult.

Two bad days, feeling under the weather Saturday just scraped 6,200ish. I was looking after 4 year old granddaughter yesterday and although we went to Bushy Park, I only managed to reach just over 8,000. I had a good, but not exceptional run for a couple of weeks, sometimes it's hard to keep the momentum going. However, hope to improve on the week-end today.

shysal Mon 22-Sept-14 08:35:19

Pleased you are with us Nanabelle. I am also looking forward to more sunshine today. I managed 14,568 yesterday, although I was hoping for more.

chloe1984 Mon 22-Sept-14 08:26:18

14204 for me yesterday not sure how as had all the family here for tea. Think it must have been all the trips to the kitchen refilling the teapot.Well done * nanabelle* hopefully it will become second nature to us all to get out there , always better in the sunshine though.

Anya Mon 22-Sept-14 08:18:13
