So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

This thread has inspired me so I'm off to buy a pedometer today ... and I think I has better walk there.

chloe1984 Tue 16-Sept-14 22:33:02

Am still on holiday so today have clocked up 15300 however have also eaten a large cake and an even larger ice cream oh well cannot ever seem to get it right but won't give up,until I get the ratio of steps to food a bit more balanced.

TerriBull Tue 16-Sept-14 19:58:01

A walk in Richmond Park, looked beautiful in the sunshine this afternoon, got me up to 10,415 steps.

Rowantree Tue 16-Sept-14 14:26:53

I mean Lesley Sansome, by the way - your original post about the exercise routine!

Rowantree Tue 16-Sept-14 14:25:17

MrsPickle I have done that - but there are sooo many DVDs! I also see she's American. Are the DVDs compatible with players in the UK, and which would be best for a beginner (ie completely unfit!) I don't want to spend £20 on a DVD which I can't use or is totally unsuitable for a novice, so would welcome advice, please flowers grin

Still a bit hobbly/strapped up and not doing classes. Ok on the flat most of the time, stairs not so good. Still managing to hit the target just about but missing the gym. And I never, ever, ever, ever thought I would say that!

TerriBull Mon 15-Sept-14 20:00:19

Fantastic result Chloe I don't think I've ever done that many since I left double figures!

TerriBull Mon 15-Sept-14 19:58:54

Just topped the 10,000 mark it's 8 pm and my pedometer reads 10,104, might do a few more before bedtime but probably not many.
