The Gransnet 10,000 steps a day club

So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Do I sense that, like for me, the novelty is wearing off a bit for some of us? It seems more of a chore these days. I had to force myself to top up my total to 10,289 yesterday. Coming on here keeps me going I think.

11,091 at 8.15 pm. I'm won't be moving a lot more today.

shysal Fri 12-Sept-14 08:30:31

10,814 for me yesterday. Had plenty of time to walk so should have done more, but couldn't get my a*se into gear until late afternoon!

9093 for me yesterday but it was the last day of my holiday and we were driving around quite a bit. Back home next week and plan to walk twice a day. Hope the weather stays nice!

12018 for me today really pleased as have been feeling a bit low but forced myself out this morning and felt better the longer I was out walking. So onward and upward.

TerriBull Thu 11-Sept-14 20:16:50

11,116, didn't think I'd get to 10,000 this morning felt very sluggish so quite pleased with final result.

Thankyou so much Gracesgran - I did feel rather heroic. Today I've done 5,000 so far. As I worked (sitting down) all morning, I'm content to have managed 5,000 and am now sitting down, thinking I may have a glass of wine at 6pm grin

Gracesgran Thu 11-Sept-14 13:51:42

gringringrin I didn't realise Grace was her dog shysal. I don't mind at all but I was worried about usurping someone's name.

The pedometer looks good. It just needs to count steps at this point really.

Iam64 I don't know about three hours stripping wallpaper counting as steps - it deserves a medal in my book. smile

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:48:58

Oh yes, stripping uses lots of energy!grin

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-14 13:30:39

8,900 yesterday, but again 3 hours stripping wallpaper, surely that counts as it uses so many muscles grin

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:22:44

Gracesgran, I apologise for getting your name wrong above. You will know by now that there was a regular by the name of Gracesmum, Grace being her dog. Must pay more attention! smile

shysal Thu 11-Sept-14 13:20:09

I have one of these, also available on Amazon. Only disadvantage in that it measures in Km, not miles.
tanita pedometer
The cheaper ones I have had in the past have either fallen off and got lost, or been inaccurate. I hope you decide to join us, and look forward to hearing of your progress.

Gracesgran Thu 11-Sept-14 12:37:57

I like the look of this. Presumably the first step is to measure what you are doing and work towards beating that bit by bit.

Do you have any recommendations for pedometers. That seems a good place to start smile

Versavisa Thu 11-Sept-14 12:30:37

....and I've forgotten to put my pedometer on this morning!

Versavisa Thu 11-Sept-14 12:25:08

Had a good day yesterday. Walked to the doctors and back then went blackberrying in the afternoon. Them berries are darned elusive so a lot of steps needed to find enough. Clocked up 16k but today will be a bit quieter - not so many steps between the jam pan and the sink!

chloe1984 Wed 10-Sept-14 20:55:57

9080 for me today

Bellasnana Wed 10-Sept-14 20:42:21

You have all put me to shame blush Thought I had been pretty good today but only managed 7629 sad I think I may regret asking DD2 for this FitBit grin

TerriBull Wed 10-Sept-14 20:26:39

10,513 for today.

That's about it Gracesmum!

Gracesgran Wed 10-Sept-14 09:07:42

This seems like such a good idea. Is the idea that each and every day you do 10,000 steps or is there more to it than that?

shysal Wed 10-Sept-14 08:05:28

Just scraped in at 10,287 yesterday. Aiming for a bit more these days.

TerriBull Tue 09-Sept-14 19:30:46

12,195 today so far.

chloe1984 Tue 09-Sept-14 19:25:24

10058 for me today not quite sure how it happened as have only been browsing around shops etc.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 09-Sept-14 15:05:02

That post would have been better if I had said "exactly how old young you are"
