So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Welcome to the club Roseannie. Your 6 mile walk will be well in excess of 10,000 steps. Hope you have better sucess with the pedometer in the future. Before I got my Tanita 3-axes one, which I place in a pocket, I went through several which broke or fell off and got lost!

I clocked up 11,305 on Sunday, and 8,291 yesterday (1 hour walking in the rain was enough).

Versavisa Tue 26-Aug-14 07:11:24

I was determined not to let the rain put me off so I wrapped up and went for a walk. Last time I looked I was at 8,889 and then when I looked at home the thing had reset itself again!!!

I think it must have been when I was trying to pull my waterproof trousers off as it does involve a few contortions! Will watch for that in future.

terri happy wedding anniversary flowers we will both do better tomorrow

TerriBull Mon 25-Aug-14 21:04:05

Chloe you have managed to exceed by steps by roughly 150, I also had a bad day coming in at just under 5,000. My excuse, it was raining cats and dogs all day and it was my wedding anniversary so we went out for a long lunch instead of a long walk. Never mind, as Scarlett O'Hara once said "tomorrow is another day"

chloe1984 Mon 25-Aug-14 20:50:28

Another disastrous day for me could blame it on the weather as I haven't gone far today but more honestly blame it on sheer idleness so only 5152 for me. Two GS coming for a few days tomorrow so will improve no doubt.

Rosannie Mon 25-Aug-14 20:25:37

Just returned from Whitby and surrounding countryside and I bought my very first pedometer in Pickering, I managed a 6 mile walk (but need to convert it to steps). Next day I lost the back off the pedometer and the battery came adrift so I didn't measure any more days walking!!

Now I'm home I will sort it out and would love to join the 10,000 steps club.

Versavisa Mon 25-Aug-14 08:19:00

I was disappointed to see that my pedometer had reset itself today, but luckily it was before I'd had my walk. So I clocked 10,101 after the reset. Probably not much before as I did need that walk!

Too embarrassed to post yesterday, didn't even get to 3,000, my excuse we were travelling back from Norfolk most of the day.

10,179 for today with quite a few hours till bedtime.

Flowerofthewest, sadly I'm not a real Terri it's my "nom de plume!"

chloe1984 Sat 23-Aug-14 21:29:12

9630 from me today the only walking left to do is upstairs to bed.moon

Flowerofthewest Sat 23-Aug-14 18:56:06

lovely to see another Terri on here

Flowerofthewest Sat 23-Aug-14 18:55:05

Can I join in. I have a pedometer (well my 4th one now two went through the washing machine and one dropped down the loo) My latest Omron is not yet set up but this will give me the inspiration to do it. I do use my phone walking App. which gives me a little fanfare when I reach 10,000 steps. This may be just the jolt I need to get me off my fat backside.

Pittcity Sat 23-Aug-14 16:16:53

I am averaging 7000 daily, but am using phone and keep forgetting to pick it up. Will have to get a pedometer or a new memory!

chloe1984 Sat 23-Aug-14 13:19:43

Thank you for the flowers Versa let's see how we do today.

Versavisa Sat 23-Aug-14 12:05:55

Oh, thank you chloe1984. flowers

I had forgotten about my pedometer! I expect my phone to do everything these days and this is clearly not the best use of it.

I have found my old pedometer out of the back of the kitchen drawer and even found new batteries for it - so no excuses now!

chloe1984 Sat 23-Aug-14 11:04:01

Exactly the same happened to me so I bought an inexpensive pedometer from Amazon which I clip on my belt.

Versavisa Sat 23-Aug-14 10:31:42

Does anyone have problems with the amount of battery the app takes?

I'm using Accupedo on my iphone and it seems everytime I want to go for a walk the battery is almost flat. I charge it overnight every night but the app sucks the battery dry very quickly.

shysal Sat 23-Aug-14 09:59:49

Just enjoy the puppy, Aka, it won't make any difference in the grand scheme of things!

Aka Sat 23-Aug-14 08:55:51

Yes I agree Shysal I've had two good days with almost 10,000 then only a 6,600 yesterday. It means rather than feeling you've failed, it's just normal to have days when you can't get out much.
I'm looking after a 10 week old pup who hasn't completed her vaccinations so I can't walk her nor do I want to leave her alone for too long in the house without company. A bit stymied.

shysal Sat 23-Aug-14 08:20:56

Everyone is doing really well, I think it helps to confess about the poor days and congratulate yourself on the good, it keeps the momentum going.
I did 13,168 on Thursday and 10,423 yesterday.

chloe1984 Fri 22-Aug-14 20:18:23

Well done Terri hope you had a good week only 8017 for me today not such a good day for all sorts of reasons, as ever hope to do better tomorrow

TerriBull Fri 22-Aug-14 20:10:57

10,889 for today, leaving Norfolk tomorrow so will spend most of the day in the car and don't expect to get anywhere near 10,000 as a result.

chloe1984 Thu 21-Aug-14 20:22:29

9945 for me today will be looking after DD dog until Sunday so in theory should be going on long walks but not sure how it will work in practise as he is rather nervous near main roads etc......so may have to walk him up and down the garden instead.

TerriBull Thu 21-Aug-14 20:14:49

Not quite there today, 9,511 better walk about till bedtime.

shysal Thu 21-Aug-14 07:59:10

Only 7601 for me yesterday, but I did do a high energy exercise class. Today I am out to lunch, so will try to fit in an hour's walk this morning, then a stroll before cutting the grass early evening - my least favourite job on my steep lawn, but it involves walking up and down!
