So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Thanks Terri been walking round Liverpool all day! Ankles aching but now relaxing on huge bed (which i have ALL to myself) in Premier Inn with feet up. Back home tomorrow so with long train journey won't clock up too many steps.

chloe1984 Thu 07-Aug-14 21:01:56

aka well done you. Only 8203 for me today but aiming for more tomorrow don't think I will ever get to 15,000. But will keep trying.

9591 today

TerriBull Wed 06-Aug-14 21:06:08

9,817 plus a few more to take me up to bedtime. Less than 10,000 due to having granddaughter all day although we did spend a fair amount of time at the park. I didn't get to do the activities that I try to follow to hit the magic figure, but what the hell you can't fret about doing the same things every day.

chloe1984 Wed 06-Aug-14 19:41:28

14241 for me today not hopeful for tomorrow as will be driving home

Aka Tue 05-Aug-14 22:08:25

Only 8,500 today but didn't push it as I too have a blister and I'm off on holiday again tomorrow.

chloe1984 Tue 05-Aug-14 18:52:43

Well I was up to 11234 after a long walk along the seafront then my phone ran out of charge! Am destroyed as I was going to smash it today. Another day tomorrow phone is now charging.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 05-Aug-14 17:13:25

10,337 and a long walk ahead which could be scuppered by extremely painful blister on little toe

TerriBull Tue 05-Aug-14 17:05:51

9,797 plus anything between now and bedtime.

Aka Mon 04-Aug-14 21:09:07

9988 plus the same crawl to bed as Terri when I eventually drag myself off this sofa. There are 13 steps to climb which ought to make up the 12 still needed, if not I'll jump up and down a few times grin

chloe1984 Mon 04-Aug-14 20:32:27

8057 for me today am surprised as I always thought I was fairly active but as ever will try harder tomorrow.

TerriBull Mon 04-Aug-14 20:01:24

11,608 plus however many steps I take to crawl up stairs to bed later. A good day for me, steps wise!

Not much hope for me then, knackered knees and arthritic back and walking is no longer a pleasure. I have walked and done exercise classes and been active most of my life, but now need a walking stick and my four wheeled shopping trolley as a 'walker'. So spare a thought for those of us who can't join the club.

It certainly makes you aware of how much you have to move about to reach the 10,000. I'm up to 8,500 and it's 1.30 pm but I've had to walk the dogs AND walk to the shops.

TerriBull Mon 04-Aug-14 11:29:13

Bought a new super duper pedometer, I have given the rubbish one to my husband. Did 7,120 yesterday, have done 5,034 so far today, a lot of those on the treadmill, walking into town and back this afternoon so hope to exceed 10,000 by the end of the day. To get anywhere near the prescribed total I need to do both of these activities, unless I have a day out of the ordinary say up in London traipsing around.

chloe1984 Mon 04-Aug-14 09:35:53

Oh dear only 3996 yesterday but as I spent most of it sitting down watching old movies on TV as Mr Chloe works on a Sunday and I enjoy them more without his running commentary. I am trying harder today , much harder, will report back.
