The Gransnet 10,000 steps a day club

So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

11418 today and that took 99 minutes according to my pedometer Alison i walked a total of 8k and burned 530 kcals (allegedly). About a quarter of that was walking about the house, garden, up and down stairs.

Big improvement on yesterday.

It's a great aim and I think I've calculated (by 'manual' counting) that I do 1000 steps in about 8 minutes. You only have to calculate once how long it takes you to do 1000 steps, then thereafter you can just time your walking rather than counting. It might seem as though 80 minutes (to do 10,000 steps) is impractical, especially if you're working. but walking round the house, upstairs, etc., etc. counts too. . . I think? you have to walk briskly to get the most benefit. I walk to the gym 2 or 3 times a week (I used to cycle); I walk to the supermarket; I'm a 10-minute walk from the bus stop; I walk as much as I can nearly every day, and I enjoy it.

As it is Sunday and buses here are scarce I walked into town, around the shops and back. Had downloaded Accupedo as recommended by Chloe1984 and this walk was 11,041 steps. I also had a couple of bags of shopping on the way back!!
Will have to do this more often and remember to carry my phone with me!

chloe1984 Sun 03-Aug-14 12:15:46

10012 for me yesterday and that included walking into town and the Race (walk) for life I did. This thread is making me realise that I do need to be more active but short of running up and downstairs all day am trying to think of how to incorporate more steps into my day. Am off to the coast for a few days so am hoping to do more have also taken to carrying my phone everywhere as my pedodometer is an app !

On Friday I used the pedometer for my round of golf- that was 1100+ steps. I'm doing that three times a week and on the other days shorter walks and housework - as well as eating healthily that's the best I can do - the Lupus is very draining so I'm with you sort of ladies and gents- keep it up - keep on keeping on smile

Busy today, but poor steps. Packing up after hols and driving home. You can't win 'em all.

Aka Sat 02-Aug-14 21:56:40

5241 steps on my first day with new pedometer. I'd say that was fairly average for me so need to get out more...

munster Sat 02-Aug-14 12:54:19

You can't have a day off if you have a dog! Even if you play golf as well!

MrsPickle Fri 01-Aug-14 23:09:35

Google Leslie Sansone for exercise at home!

Mishap Fri 01-Aug-14 22:27:54

How do you do 10000 a day when it is tipping down? - march round the house?

I am waiting for he arrival of my seated exercise DVD (won in a gransnet competition!) and will soon be very fit!

upsydaisy Fri 01-Aug-14 22:23:14

haha grin that made me laugh Galen but no I don't think it does count.
Yes Mrs Pickle I'm inclined to agree with dentist causing sore toes, since I was rigid with fear right down to my feet.

No steps today. It's been raining most of today and my toes were still hurting loads, though seem to be getting better now. With rain forecast all day tomorrow too, there'll be no steps there either, tho I did buy a folding brolly today so's I don't get caught in any rain showers.

Galen Fri 01-Aug-14 21:55:17

I've moved my lips 10,000 times!
Does that count?

goldengirl Fri 01-Aug-14 21:17:07

DH walks over 10,000 steps a day. I wish I could - and would if we had loos along the way but I'm scared of being taken short blush

Pittcity Fri 01-Aug-14 20:40:09

Must've done over 10,000 today as I took DGS to the beach and had to make four trips to the loos that were a good hike away. Forgotten how much wee there is in a three year old

Have downloaded app but need to remember to turn it on hmm. It counted 200 odd when just pottering around in kitchen making a cuppa yesterday.

chloe1984 Fri 01-Aug-14 19:45:42

Sure I won't be doing any more walking today so 8690 for me hope to do more tomorrow as I should be doing the race (walk) for life in our local country park for my slimmimg club.

MrsPickle Thu 31-Jul-14 21:52:50

Trauma at the dentist sounds plausible.
Could explain everything else, including painful toes. Almost.

upsydaisy Thu 31-Jul-14 21:41:56

7,856 steps today and now crippled from two painful toe joints through walking in wrong shoes, now can hardly walk at all! Plus pain in my chest - don't know if that was chest presses against a wall or trauma at the dentist. Ready for my bed I know that.

chloe1984 Thu 31-Jul-14 19:36:14

And meant to say well done*mrs pickle*

chloe1984 Thu 31-Jul-14 19:35:31

Only 8798 (exactly) for me will try to do better tomorrow.

boheminan Thu 31-Jul-14 19:19:13

"I'm in"! grin After losing my dog last year, exercise has reduced drastically (I was dog walking for around 2.5hrs a day). I've ordered a pedometer and am intrigued to see just how many steps I make a day. I also cycle 15 mins every day - does that count as steps? if so, how the hell are they measuredhmm

MrsPickle Thu 31-Jul-14 19:01:34

11k steps today and one fall off the bike. I don't bounce anymore, but thankfully nothing too serious except a painful rib and knee.
I shall get back tuit tomorrow.

gardenoma Thu 31-Jul-14 16:59:06

Good idea, i will join the club.
I always think i walk a fair old distance every day, but do i??
Just bought a free app Pedometer Master Free, can fiddle around with it to my hearts content, even a total non techie like me can do it.
Here goes, oh shoot i have to wait till tomor morning, too late in the day now, although it might be interesting to see how much i actually walk whilst making dinner!

upsydaisy Wed 30-Jul-14 21:19:58

I'll join. I may as well put the pedometer I bought to good use, its been sat in the draw since about March! I will put a link to this thread on the Rochdale local site, so if there is anyone on here from thereabouts, come to the local site and say hi, and we'll step together.

Also, just had a thought - the stepcounter I have is called a buddy. It links to a website called activ8rlives.com and I think you can set up a group on there, so if anyone else has one, we could set up a Gransnet group. Right, will have to get instructions out, it's still in British winter time or whatever its called, tsk, you'd think it would change the time by itself wouldn't you.

TerriBull Wed 30-Jul-14 17:46:55

My husband plays 18 holes about three times a week, he reckons he walks about 5 miles or so, and to that you have to add walking sideways looking for balls, plus lots of bending and swinging. He manages to keep the weight off, which he puts down to his golfing activities.

I think I will fall short again today by about 2000 steps, but I'm not happy with my cheapo pedometer so may go for something better.

suebailey1 Wed 30-Jul-14 17:30:57

Ok does anyone know about how much 6 miles is - that how far 18 holes on my club golf course is - which I did today and will do tomorrow and Friday- can we have a day off at all?
