So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

10,594 yesterday, without actually 'going for a walk'. Body Attack class and various errands.

11738 for me today so a little better

Nanabelle - that Fitbit app is so useful isn't it, it does spur you on to do more. I have a couple of friends who also have Fitbits and it's fun to watch their progress and try to beat their step total grin

9814 for me yesterday am aiming to go for a longish walk this morning as it is so light and bright outside . But DH seems to have other ideas so may end up traveling a few miles but by car.

I had a good start to the week with 20,537 yesterday. I usually get more and more reluctant as the week goes on, so must try hard to keep going.
How obedient of you Nanabelle, to do as Fitbit suggests! My exercise before Downton was to walk into the kitchen to look in the fridge for a snack, found a Mars ice cream!

Nanabelle Sun 26-Oct-14 23:09:59

I opened up my iPad after Strictly and the fitbit ap flashed up that I only had another 1200 steps to go for the 10,000. Ah ha, just time to go for a quick walk round the village before Downton started, so now I have managed a good start to this week with 10804. Last week's totals were quite low for me as I didn't get out enough, so determined this week to make more effort.
Enjoy the week everyone and happy walking smile

9212 yesterday, mostly walking round the shops!

TerriBull Sun 26-Oct-14 18:35:12

Only 6,000 for yesterday as close friend came to lunch and we spent all afternoon catching up.

11,823 for today so far clocked up walking to the pub for lunch and back.

He's nearly eleven shysal and has been flat on his back since this morning's walk! i think if I picked his lead up he'd cover his face with his paws! tomorrow, I'm going to stick the phone in my pocket and keep the app going all day - then we shall see!

I went over 11000 steps on Friday and again yesterday, but have had the family round for Sunday dinner today, so haven't been out at all. Still, I thought I'd have clocked up a fair few steps running up and down stairs tidying up (before and after) and I've been on my feet a lot doing the cooking and prep, but I find I've only managed 706 steps so far! shock It's too dark now to venture out.

So...where exactly did I tidy that stepper to?

shysal Sun 26-Oct-14 10:14:16

Two more walks for your dog, specki and you will be there! smile Lucky dog!

specki4eyes Sun 26-Oct-14 09:41:41

Ok so I've downloaded a free App called Noom onto my phone and walked the dog for 3.5 km. and it reads 3,516 steps. How on earth is it possible to walk another 6,500 steps today in order to make it up to 10,000? on that calculation I'm going to have to walk a further 7 km!!

shysal Sun 26-Oct-14 07:08:51

11,668 yesterday. My late afternoon top-up will be more difficult now the clocks have changed, as I prefer not to go out in the dark.

10613 for me today so hopefully back on track

jamsidedown Sat 25-Oct-14 10:20:22

10875 yesterday mostly because of walking to, working on and walking back from the allotment. Hope for a reasonable count today if we get out for a walk at Virginia Water.

shysal Sat 25-Oct-14 09:02:52

Managed 14,022 yesterday, rather reluctantly.
Parked near the next village this morning, then walked to a Martin's newsagents to collect 4 free Cadbury's Screme eggs (Vodafone Rewardz promotion). blush Only eaten one so far! Hope to burn of the extra calories at aerobics this morning.

Another week of mixed readings. On an 'average' day I'm clocking up 7,000+
It's half term this coming week so off on holiday and that will mean a fair bit of walking.
I'm very impressed with some of these scores, and know how much effort needs to be put into getting anywhere near the 10,000 target, let alone exceeding it.

chloe1984 Sat 25-Oct-14 08:31:30

Only 8788 for me yesterday somedays it is a struggle so see how today goes am determined to try and do better even if it's only a little better.

TerriBull Fri 24-Oct-14 20:31:22

11,581, ambled round the shops this afternoon, bought a shirt in Gap, quite a bargain, mostly window shopped though which all added to my overall count.

I'm wondering what I will achieve tomorrow, have a friend coming to lunch so we will probably sit on our bums catching up all afternoon. Must get out in the morning at least.

jamsidedown Fri 24-Oct-14 14:41:50

10285 yesterday, but today is not quite so good - so far.

chloe1984 Fri 24-Oct-14 07:47:05

Spent most of yesterday travelling so a disappointing 5313 for me ,more hopeful for today.

shysal Fri 24-Oct-14 07:01:20

11,304 yesterday. It was a dry day so I enjoyed kicking the leaves!

TerriBull Thu 23-Oct-14 20:29:13

12,448 for today still quite nice Autumn weather good for walking Some lunatic nearby it seems is letting off fireworks as I type this, November 5th is still a couple of weeks away for heavens sake!

Maggiemaybe Thu 23-Oct-14 12:51:42

Love it, shysal! grin

shysal Thu 23-Oct-14 12:42:50

I calculated that, with my estimated stride length, I cover approx. 5 miles when walking 10,000 steps, which takes about 1.5 hours.

Sounds like a lovely day, Maggiemaybe! Reminds me of the time I loudly pointed out some cows from the top deck of a bus, then remembered my GCs were not with me! blush
