So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

At the average walking pace for women of 3 mph, to achieve 7 miles per day you would have to walk for over 2 hours each day..you must all be superhuman grannies!

specki4eyes Thu 23-Oct-14 10:46:17

Are you all kidding?! I have just walked and counted 2,500 steps covering a route of 2.5 kilometres. Therefore 10,000 steps equals 10 kilometres or almost 7 miles!
7 miles per day?? Every day?? i'm fit and healthy but that would be impossible for me.

Well, I had a lovely day yesterday with DGS2, but he decided he didn't fancy the pushchair so we went off walking for an hour. At the drunken sailor pace of a 15 month old, I clocked up fewer than 1000 steps! Note to self: when walking, don't stop every 30 seconds to bend down and pick up leaves, acorn cups and crisp packets; try to resist the desire then to push said trophies into gaps in walls; but if you should give in, fight the urge to backtrack two paces later to retrieve said treasures. Don't stop to stare in sheer fascination at a neighbour while she changes from driving shoes to boots, and don't feel you need to grind to a halt every time you want to point at a passing car, or a plane, or a bird on a chimney. But if you have your DGS with you, enjoy every second! smile

I'm on my own today and it's not raining - should do better!

Only 6,969 today. As it had been a dry day, I chose to give my grass it's final cut for the winter rather than bump up my total.

chloe1984 Wed 22-Oct-14 18:48:35

12399 for me today some days are better than others but a lovely day for walking today.

TerriBull Wed 22-Oct-14 18:15:55

Almost too embarrassed to post, some spectacular achievements steps wise. Had a better day today, a fairly respectable 12,240. Lovely sunny Autumn day good for walking, Maggiemaybe maybe you were able to get your baby GS out in his pushchair today. I was rather housebound with mine yesterday.

chloe1984 Wed 22-Oct-14 08:48:04

Only 9459 for me yesterday hoping for better today.

jamsidedown Tue 21-Oct-14 23:33:12

Respect shysal, hope you stayed away from trees. My total today is a big fat zero! I forgot to clip on my pedometer blush. I don't think it would have been a great total anyway ....

shysal Tue 21-Oct-14 19:31:56

By 3pm today I had only done 1,400 steps, so forced myself out in the wind to make up the total to 10,780.

Maggiemaybe Tue 21-Oct-14 19:12:51

That's the best excuse though, TerriBull. I'm looking after my DGS2 tomorrow and will have a very poor day step-wise if the weather's still bad. I wouldn't have risked taking him out in the pushchair today.

Maggiemaybe Tue 21-Oct-14 19:10:16

I only managed to scrape over 5,000 yesterday, so guilt forced me out today in between downpours. It was a bit blustery to say the least, so I cut the walk a bit short and topped up on the stepper. I've got 10,811 so far, which is one of my best daily totals. I am very impressed by some of you, particularly Thistledoo - wow!

TerriBull Tue 21-Oct-14 19:07:04

Two really bad days for me, 7,500 yesterday, but far far worse today 2,300 eeek!! I have an excuse, I was looking after baby grandson aged 6 months most of the day, it was windy we didn't really get out, only to load him in and out of the car. Will do better tomorrow, couldn't do any worse!

Iam64 Tue 21-Oct-14 07:58:44

Wow Thistledoo, almost 20,000 steps, that's going some.
I only managed 6,900 yesterday but wearing a pedometer definitely encourages use of the legs

jamsidedown Mon 20-Oct-14 23:01:25

12284 after a walk into town, but I think tomorrow I might stay indoors, the weather looks horrible

chloe1984 Mon 20-Oct-14 19:06:19

11440 for me today had a bit of a struggle due to feeling more like hiding under the duvet all day but made it outside for a fairly long walk. Welcome Thistledoo

shysal Mon 20-Oct-14 16:44:56

It will be great to have you along Thistledoo!

Thistledoo Mon 20-Oct-14 16:41:08

Staying in southampton while visiting elderly relatives, have walked for what seems like a long way backwards and forwards to care home. Cousin lent me a pedometer, today have clocked up 19750 steps today and it's only 4 30. Could have goy bus but am unsure which one to get. Definitely getting a pedometer for myself when I get home, then joining the club.

15,000 yesterday - although half a box of Lindor undid any good they did. Today 9,445 so far. Lindor score - zero (but only because we ate the whole box between us)

jamsidedown Mon 20-Oct-14 12:52:34

11340 yesterday after a walk in the lovely autumn sunshine. Not so good today I suspect.

TerriBull Sun 19-Oct-14 20:36:01

Mixed bag for me for this weekend, did quite a respectable 12,000ish yesterday, but have had granddaughter most of today and there's only so far a four year old's legs will go, even if you do include a trip to the park playground so it's a not so good 7,656 for today.

chloe1984 Sun 19-Oct-14 20:13:56

Didn't quite make it today only managed 9677. Shysal well done on your impressive total for today.

shysal Sun 19-Oct-14 18:14:15

Just got back from my second walk of the day, making a total of 21,851.

chloe1984 Sun 19-Oct-14 08:54:25

13767 for me yesterday not quite sure how that happened , never really thought about the ID thing but do carry my phone most places and have put an ICE contact on it. Perhaps there is a gap in the market for something that would supply all the necessary info. ( bit like a tag on a dogs collar) grin am now going to tackle a big pile of ironing so unless I walk on the spot not expecting a huge total for today.

jamsidedown Sat 18-Oct-14 23:58:47

Sorry I haven't posted on here for a few days, I have been sitting quietly in the corner ashamed of myself and my count - but - ta daa - twice this week I managed over the 10K, today being 13745 following a trip to London and walking instead of taking the tube. In my defence, I have been doing an awful lot of decorating which doesn't exactly rack up the steps although I have been working hard smile

Nanabelle Sat 18-Oct-14 23:48:42

i'd never thought of carrying ID and contact information but it sounds like a good idea. Phones are great but can run out of battery! 6828 for me today - a quieter day! Went out in the car for a change!
Well done Anya - we all have different targets and its good just to get out there and enjoy the outside world when you can. As for shopping steps - our Tesco is enormous smile
