So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Most of us carry our phones while we are out walking, shopping or whatever and I have an "ICE" contact number on my mobile so if anything disastrous happened to me while I was out hopefully that would work. Although I'm not really sure if it's well known

Back in the day, when I did a bit of running, shysal, I bought a wrist band from a company called Road ID. I wanted some form of visible ID after reading a sad story about a well-known businessman and philanthropist in London who collapsed and died whilst out jogging and wasn't identified for days. I think the same thing happened to Steve Cram's brother. I'm glad you've reminded me about this as when I go out for a walk I tend to take just my keys with me - time to dig the wristband out again!

The only thing is, it'll make me feel so guilty - apart from contact details, it's inscribed with a motivational message "Just get out there and run!". grin

12,600 yesterday which included a long walk with a friend (and the dogs), then shopping and cleaning/clearing up the house.

I've been clocking up respectable (for me) scores this week. Never less than 5,500, several at the higher end of the target 10,000.
It's surprising how many steps shopping takes - I know what you mean Chloe

shysal Sat 18-Oct-14 08:18:50

I wear mine all day like you Nanabelle, clocking up 10,755 yesterday.
I would be interested to know whether you all carry ID when out walking. I have home-made laminated cards including DDs' phone numbers in every bag and coat pocket. I worry that otherwise, if I got run over or taken ill, nobody would know who I was!

Nanabelle Fri 17-Oct-14 22:45:28

grin grin Chloe.
I went on a lovely country walk with a group today, and have clocked up 12862 by the end of the day. One of our party rescued a sheep that had got caught up in brambles - he had some kind of cutting device with him thank goodness. When the sheep was free it gave him a steady look, that seemed to say Thank You!
Do some of you just wear your pedometers when you go out for a walk, as I put mine on as soon as I get dressed and take it off at bedtime….. so every step counts!

Lovely sunny Autumn day 11,055 many of which were done walking the perimeter of Bushy Park.

chloe1984 Fri 17-Oct-14 20:04:02

12345 think most of it was done around Marks and Spencer's.

Versavisa Fri 17-Oct-14 19:05:30

11,100 yesterday. I am now seeing large supermarkets and shopping centres as useful for something at least! And don't settle on a new coat until you've seen everyone available. Your pedometer will thank you.

Oh shysal I find it hard to believe how nasty that driver was - and why? You have to feel sorry for her if that's how she gets her fun!

As it has now gone dark I'm not going to be finishing at much more than 8,000 today.

Off to the Houses of Parliament tomorrow so may clock up a good number.

Have a good weekend everyone.

chloe1984 Fri 17-Oct-14 10:11:05

Only 8763 for me yesterday not sure what's happening today but will try to keep it up I agree that with the colder weather on its way I will not need many excuses to stay sat.

shysal Fri 17-Oct-14 09:48:54

12,134 yesterday, but it was getting dark when I finished. I shall have to change my routine after we alter the clocks.

Nanabelle Thu 16-Oct-14 23:43:00

Versavisa you have hit it on the head - the coming darker evenings are not going to help us, are they.
Congrats everyone who is carrying on with this. It certainly makes me much more aware that I should be getting outside and going for a walk more - even if it is just around the longest perimeter of the village!
Today was just 8316 and a lot of those were at a two year old's slow pace! Still, I love my days with gorgeous little gd, so don't mind not hitting the target when I'm with her.

TerriBull Thu 16-Oct-14 19:38:47

10,739 I have managed for today.

Elegran Thu 16-Oct-14 17:14:03

A good moment to mime a dizzy turn and almost fall to the floor, Shysal Get her worried.

shysal Thu 16-Oct-14 17:09:07

Definitely deliberate, She turned and smurked!

Versavisa Thu 16-Oct-14 12:28:47

Oh shysal how infuriating!?@&£#

Did she do it deliberately do you think?

shysal Thu 16-Oct-14 10:57:47

I used to love Dr Hook, chloe! You have prompted me to get out their Greatest Hits CD to put in the car. A Little Bit More is my favourite.

Fantastic last total Versavisa, I agree about the evenings getting darker, as I also tend to top up at that time. Not looking forward to the clock change.

Whilst completing my 10,806 steps on a narrow stretch of pavement in a cloudburst yesterday, I heard a huge 4X4 rev up behind me, then a bl**dy young woman veered into a puddle to drench me! Grrr! angry

TerriBull Thu 16-Oct-14 09:34:10

Only managed 8,600 yesterday, I was going to go out in the afternoon, but elder son dropped in at short notice and felt it was a bit rude to ask him to shove off so I could go out walking. Excuses! excuses!

Hope you pick up a bargain today chloe.

chloe1984 Thu 16-Oct-14 09:08:24

Well managed 12413 yesterday, went to a Dr Hook concert last evening and was rocking in the aisles. Off to John Lewis later will definitely be a more sedate day.

Versavisa Thu 16-Oct-14 07:18:15

Don't think my flu jab on Saturday was really a problem, in retrospect. Just think I could have done with a bit more sleep instead of hurtling out to the surgery. Ah well, will be better for it in the long term I hope.

Last four days for me:

5,545
8,253
11,670
17,803
And I think I have identified why I'm falling short of the 10k most days.

I was going for an evening walk up to a few weeks ago, to make up the steps, but I can't do that now. I live on an unlit road so it's not tempting to be out after dark. The last two days I've been at my daughter's so as well as running after the GDs I haven't been limited to only walking in daylight.

I shall have to try to make more time for walking earlier in the day as the limit is only going to get worse over winter!

Anya Thu 16-Oct-14 06:16:22

Well done everyone.

Nanabelle Wed 15-Oct-14 23:49:47

Ah well thank you - all down to going out for long walk with Townswomen (and lunching too)......but today just managed 8292 (rain here for the day). No proper walk and now on gd duty so no long walk tomorrow either.

I did move my fitbit from bra to jeans tiny hip pocket and wondered if it gave a higher reading grin. Got a bit phobic about the Bluetooth stuff going on so close to delicate parts so to speak!

chloe1984 Wed 15-Oct-14 08:24:09

Nanabelle you are awesome..

shysal Wed 15-Oct-14 07:00:19

Wow, Nanabelle, great total! There is no autumn colour to enjoy here, the wind and rain have brought all the leaves down.

Nanabelle Tue 14-Oct-14 23:16:32

wowee - my fitbit says 19155 today! Mind you, I did a good walk with some friends and was out and about a lot of the day. We were lucky to have fine weather and I managed a late afternoon walk as well.
BUT …. the last few days have only managed 5000 or less! One day was about 2500, (I think it rained all day).
The rainy days are going to be a challenge aren't they.
Enjoy the autumn colours while we can everyone. sunshine
