The Gransnet 10,000 steps a day club

So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

In Bournemouth for a week, hampered by bad weather this morning but managed to get up to 11,385 this afternoon after a walk by a rough sea watching a few surfers.

Are you sure you don't have to swallow that?!

How long before it finishes up out of the window/bottom of the nearest canal?

Thank you for the welcome back and thank you shysal for the flowers. They smell gorgeous!

Sadly I can't give a report on my activity tracker as I haven't got it yet. I found I'd ordered the wrong colour (it's important to me) so it will be Wednesday now before it arrives.

It's the Garmin Vivofit. I liked it for several reasons:

It uses watch batteries which are supposed to last a year. I know from experience that anything that needs charging will need it just as I want to go out.

It's waterproof to 50m so I should be ok in a shower, or the shower.

It also tracks sleep.

It's worn on the wrist, so shouldn't be too vulnerable to being lost.

If you've been inactive for an hour a red bar creeps over the face of it, and you have to be active again to get rid of it. That will be scary, but motivational I hope.

It stores data for 30 days without being synced to the computer, so should be OK for holidays.

Whether it will live up to my expectations, of course, remains to be seen. Watch this space!

Thanks for that yogagran. It is the clipping part that bothers me as I have lost several cheapie ones in the past that clipped. I did wonder about the Fitbit that goes on a watch type strap but that is extra pricey. As I have mentioned before I currently pop an iPod mini inside my bra, but today it cancelled itself for some unknown reason. And after I had done lots of selfless walking round the shops toogrin

yogagran Mon 06-Oct-14 13:57:08

purpledaffodil I have a Fitbit Zip, costs around £40, I clip mine onto my bra and it syncs with my phone or tablet, keeps a total for the day, the week, the month etc. Easy to use too

etheltbags, I had several of the clip-on pedometers, but they either dropped off and got lost or were inaccurate. I therefore decided to spend a bit more on a 3 axes one which goes in a pocket, in a handbag, or around the neck. it suits me perfectly and gives all the information I need, apart from using Kg, not miles.

Don't have a pedometer, but do use the Runtastic ap on my phone for when I walk the dogs. Usually do one and half miles in an hour every day. Except when it's raining, then there's not a dog in sight, they all hide from me! Bunch of wusses!

I also walk miles when I feed my horses. By the time I've walked down the track to their field, then walked around the field (2 acres) distributing little piles of hay to keep them amused and then walked around again once the barrow is empty of hay to fill it up with horse poo, then walked back up the track with it to the muck heap I reckon that must add at least another mile to the day's tally. And on the odd occasion that I ride, if I have to get off I cannot possible get back on again so have to walk home leading the beast! Only go for short rides these days!

Years ago I asked my doctor to refer me to the NHS Why Weight scheme. He referred me to Why Weight Plus, which is for proper fatties. Cheek!

jamsidedown Sun 05-Oct-14 20:31:40

purpledaffodil grin. I have a CSX pedometer which, although small would create a third boob, not a good look! I have to clip in to my waist band for it to be accurate, so easily forgotten if not part of the getting dressed routine.

jingl I love your hashtag!

Ive started an exercise and eating class with the nhs, they gave me a pedometer last week saying I must do 10,000 steps a day, I manged 4,000 steps and the dratted thing kept dropping off. Can anyone tell me how to keep the thing on my waistband without dropping off, I have thought of sewing it on but it means sewing it 3 times as I wear different clothes for work. Any tips ?

Another good day for most of us. Purpledaff I have got a fitbit and don't notice I am wearing it (in my bra) but if you already have something that is working, I wouldn't bother getting something else. I don't always manage good totals - there are days when I hardly go out, and I reckon you need to do a couple of walks a day to reach 10,000. Today was a good day for me as we tried out a walk I am leading for my TG group. Fitbit Zip tells me 15289 today (and I have been up and down my townhouse stairs lots of times as well as long walk!)
Such a lovely sunny day here - enjoy the week everyone and let's all get out in the sunshine while we still have some! smile

chloe1984 Sun 05-Oct-14 20:11:20

Oh dear started off with good intentions but only managed 8000 today Versa welcome back interesting to see how you manage with your new activity tracker. Welcome jamsidedown don't be embarrassed I dip down to drastic totals then gradually work my way up again so good luck. Shysal you have my undying admiration well done.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 05-Oct-14 18:57:50

I will do that again

Shysal you are amazing!

What sort is it Versa? I keep looking at Fitbit ones, but they do seem very pricey and I'm not sure how clear the display is. Would be interested to hear how you get on with your new one and what sort it is.
Jamsidedown I am using an iPod mini one with a fitness app at the moment and I put it in my bra every morning so I don't miss counting a single step. Must look very odd ferreting around in my chest when I want to check it though.smile

shysal Sun 05-Oct-14 18:46:42

Jingle, I didn't have very short legs when I started, probably worn them down by now! My total for today is now 22,116, 16.5 Km(10.3 miles). I only ever do this amount on a Sunday, as I always walk with a friend at 7.30am for 2 hours, so have time to recover for more in the afternoon.
The forecast for tomorrow is for 12 hours of rain! sad

Pittcity Sun 05-Oct-14 17:57:47

I don't keep count all day as I am still relying on a phone app. But daily walks vary from around 2500 to the local shop to 15407 today walking to a shop that we normally drive to. Must admit that my feet ache and I fell asleep on the couch as soon as we got home, but it is Sunday afternoon.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 05-Oct-14 17:32:46

Shysal that is a huge amount! Have you got very short legs? confused

How many miles do you think that is?

Anya Sun 05-Oct-14 17:13:18

That sounds very high tech Versa smile

I'm sure all comers are welcome Jamsidedown and you can't get much more inconsistent than I am - this week I've ranged from just over 1000 to 12,000+.

Don't be embarrassed to check in with a low score, you'll make me feel better!!!

jamsidedown Sun 05-Oct-14 16:55:14

Hello, is there room for a newbie on this exercise regime? I would love to join you. I have just got myself a pedometer, and eventually managed to set it up properly after some online help! Trouble is, I went for a long walk today with DH in the sunshine and forgot it blush. So, tomorrow is another day but as I am mostly a fair weather walker I may be too embarrassed to check in for a few days until the forecast wet weather goes through. smile

shysal Sun 05-Oct-14 16:49:58

Good to hear from you Versa, sorry you have had difficult times. flowers
Your new tracker sounds very posh, at least it won't keep re-setting itself (I hope).
I agree about the addiction. I have already done 14,523 today, but am about to set off on a circular walk of 7,000ish steps. I try to do a larger number on Sundays.

Versavisa Sun 05-Oct-14 13:52:59

Oh, how I've missed you all! But it looks as if you're doing great.

I had to dash off to deal with a family illness and a funeral, then some babysitting and minor illnesses all round.

So, what with one thing and another, I lost my motivation, time and internet connection. Add to that a pedometer that resets itself very easily and I haven't been doing as many steps as I'd like.

The good news is that I have an activity tracker arriving tomorrow, of which I have high hopes. It's only a glorified pedometer that syncs with the computer and keeps tally of it all. so expect me to be back with you all as soon as I have set it up and got some steps under my belt. (Actually I think I have to wear it on my wrist!).

Purpledaffodil Sun 05-Oct-14 10:34:53

There you are Shysal.putting others before self! I agree it is worrying how little we move unless we consciously try. That said, I did a morning's supply teaching on Friday and was amazed to find I'd done 4000 steps just walking around the classroom and up and down the playground. Does tell me that I must have been far more active before I retired, whatever I tell myself.
I agree about addictive Anya. I tuck my tiny ipod in my bra every morning just to keep count! grin

Anya Sun 05-Oct-14 10:05:47

Thanks for your kind words Shysal.

Is it just me or is this becoming slightly addictive? I didn't get my 'fix' yesterday by a long shot and that left me feeling agitated.

chloe1984 Sun 05-Oct-14 08:20:44

Just over 10000 for me yesterday hoping to get out for a longish walk later.
