Merlot surely most vegeatables have some degree of starches and sugars?

healthyeating.sfgate.com/fruits-vegtables-good-low-sugar-intake-2148.html

"Cruciferous Vegetables"
Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bok choy, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. All of these vegetables are very nutritious, while having a very low sugar content. For example, 1 cup of cooked cauliflower florets contains only 2.6 grams of natural sugar, and the same amount of broccoli contains 2.2 grams of sugar. You can include generous servings of these vegetables in your stir-fries, soups and salads without having to worry about your sugar intake. The high fiber content of cruciferous vegetables can help you feel full on fewer calories to help you lose weight on your low-sugar diet."

Is there a given amount of starch & sugars carbs you are supposed to eat any day?
Looking at that link you would have to eat a heck of a lot of leafy greens to get your five a day.
Good luck to you, you might all become Jet propelled.

There are sites like this one

nutritiondata.self.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2648/2

that Anya posted for me, it tells you which are the worst, carb-wise. As a family we eat loads of veg and fruit anyway, as I have always grown such a lot, so it's not hard to make the adjustment. I've found all the other diets I've tried to be far harder for me personally. This doesn't mean they are harder, it's just that they don't appeal to me in a way that I can envisage making it a more or less permanent feature of my life, and stick to it. I know I've got to change (or explode) and it has to be done in a way that works for me. Essentially, I've cut the carbs and doubled the protein, adding more leafy stuff.

I'm not going to bother trying to justify anything. I also don't need a lecture on cruciferous vegetables.

We grow and eat loads of veg and we also have access to good quality protein including our own free range eggs.

A low carb diet works for us and that's all there is to it.

Don't intend to be ground down jingl I'm a Happy Bunny most of the time and tend to avoid the grinders in real life - sad, miserable little people usually! Not talking about anyone on this thread, as they all know grin

Still losing about 1lb a week. Rarely hungry.

Recipe tip for Ceasar Salad; ditch the croutons for crispy bacon instead!

Best nibble; M&S Seed & Nut Mix. Comes in handy little 70g pots. Roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds, almonds and cashews. I defy anyone to eat more than half a pot (213 kcals, but who's counting - not me)! Full of zinc too.

If any Low Carbers are visiting Keswick I can recommend an excellent cafe with lots of LC options.

What helped me when I was trying to weigh less was NOT to say no to myself but to say I can have that if I want it but I wont have it right now I might have it later--saying No to myself was the end for me

You gain strength by being patient with yourself

PS its not a good idea to cut out all carbs from your diet it makes you feel ill and does damage to your body, there have been studies to prove this.

Good luck to everyone trying to become less!! smile

What a load of tosh hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 16-Apr-15 15:44:38

A marmalade sandwich bucked me up no end this morning.

smile

Anya Thu 16-Apr-15 17:24:47

Low carb does not mean no carbs hmm sigh.

janerowena Thu 16-Apr-15 17:43:09

Anya, you must be a mind-reader, I bought bacon today for that very reason! I'm not usually a big fan of bacon, but do like it crunchy in salads.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 16-Apr-15 20:04:17

I don't understand about the bacon. There are no carbs in bacon, surely?

merlotgran Thu 16-Apr-15 20:08:08

That's why we love it, jingl

merlotgran Thu 16-Apr-15 20:09:06

I had a bacon and mushroom sarnie for breakfast this morning......without the bread grin

I love bacon! We always bring it back from England with us, though poitrine fumée is an almost acceptable alternative when we run out.
Tonight we are having saltimbocca; veal, sage, ham and mozarella, layered and pan-fried. With it I am doing an oven-baked dish of sliced courgettes, onions, garlic, tomatoes and asparagus, layered with olive oil and herbs.

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:04:57

Bacon and I are now re-acquainted. I went off it because DBH likes his practically raw and I like it well-cooked. He kept making me cooked breakfasts swimming in bacon fat and it made me feel ill.

jings if I could move around better during the winter, I would just cut calories, as I used to. When you do that and it no longer works, because you can barely move during the winter months, the only option left is to eat even fewer calories but make every calorie count and be extremely nutritious, and eat as wide a range of foods as you can within those limits.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:11:02

Pardon? confused. Is that in response to something I said ages ago? If it is, I've forgotten it.

I have just eaten my second hot cross bun of the evening, so don't talk to me about cutting calories. I think I've given up. hmm

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:12:35

It probably was ages - you said, just cut calories. I used to be able to. If you could only hear the deep sighs at the mere thought of a hot cross bun... No, make that sobs...

loopylou Fri 17-Apr-15 21:17:46

On the subject of bacon can anyone tell me the best way to get crispy bacon? Does it depend on type/cut/smoked/unsmoked etc?
I fail abysmally whether I grill or fry......

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:22:30

I grilled mine and forgot it was there. grin I was out in the garden clearing up painting stuff. It worked beautifully. It was just cheap back bacon. I don't like smoked.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:27:38

I have got this thing called an Oink. I bought it somewhere foreign. It's flat with ridges and you put the bacon rashers on it and put on the lid. Then microwave it for a bit longer than a minute per rasher. It goes lovely and crispy. I don't think you can fry bacon crisp these days.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:32:47

it's like this but it's a nice shade of pink

Lakeland do similar but their's hasn't got a lid, si I think it would be messy.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:33:35

So. Not si

Ana Fri 17-Apr-15 21:47:46

I've got one without a lid. It doesn't work properly with all bacon and does make a bit of a mess in the microwave. Bit of a hit and miss affair so I seldom bother - don't know why I keep it! hmm
