A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

Hope you are feeling a lot better nowMamie

Mamie Wed 18-May-16 09:20:30

Morning all. The reaction to the strawberry cake lasted about three days and involved pissing for Normandy. At the end of it I had taken off the extra 1lb that had been there since January. It was almost as if my metabolism needed a kick again. Very strange and I am not recommending it!
Off to England tomorrow which will involve a very early start to get round the blockade.
Chicken curry and aubergine tonight.
Keep on Keeping on.

BBbevan Wed 18-May-16 08:41:23

It has been quiet on this thread for a few days, so thought I would wake you all up. 3lb more to lose and it will be 2 stone !!!
Weight loss has slowed a little but that is fine by me.
Mozzarella stuffed chicken breast with Parma ham this evening plus a green salad. I have never felt so well. Sleeping better, no acid reflux and masses more energy. I may even go for a further stone , If the clothes budget can stand it grin

aquagran Sat 14-May-16 20:00:15

1lb will do .

Mamie Sat 14-May-16 18:33:14

You won't get ketosis or dramatic weight loss of course, but we both lost about 1lb a week that way. You can only do what you can do!

aquagran Sat 14-May-16 18:12:44

Sounds great! Thank you so much. Onwards and upwards, sorry... downwards!

Mamie Sat 14-May-16 18:03:55

We left some low GI slow release carbs in our diet at first and did it all quite slowly over a year. I would try some pulses or pearled spelt or chickpea fritters or chickpea biscuits. Keep quantities small. We also used to have a bit of dried fruit. I make lunchtime salads with things like avocado, garlic sausage, dried apricots, pecans, tomatoes, leaves, beetroot etc. After dinner treat might be a date or fig. Dry wine all the way through!

I have followed the Diet Doctor 2 week plan to the letter, drinking bouillon each day. My husband feels ok. He is the one with the sweet tooth and is doing fine, whereas I am a cheese addict and am struggling with sugar craving. Can we introduce more carbs this week, and what would you suggest. Can we eat anything sweetish. Thanks Mamie in anticipation.

Is this it aquagran?

He has some ideas about what you can do to prevent it.

Been on low carb for two weeks. Expected to feel "foggy" but I feel dreadful! Last night couldn't stop shivering, went to bed with hot water bottle. I had had a couple of glasses of wine, we are "drinkers", was this the cause? Maybe this diet is not for me!

Anya Fri 13-May-16 22:31:00

Thanks for that Mamie

BBbevan Fri 13-May-16 19:46:22

Well that Aubergine Cheesecake was a great success. DH gave it his greatest praise " I'd have that again" .

Mamie Fri 13-May-16 17:44:46

I didn't use any sugar just eggs and chocolate. smile

Mamie Fri 13-May-16 17:43:04

It is the Elizabeth David recipe from here
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2010/jul/22/how-to-make-chocolate-mousse

Anya Fri 13-May-16 16:57:19

Help! Where is that recipe of Mamie's - a chocolately dessert type.

I can't find it anywhere sad and wanted to try it tomorrow.

merlotgran Fri 13-May-16 15:37:57

Ha Ha, mamie. Just before reading your post I decided on a change of plan and made burgers grin

Mamie Fri 13-May-16 15:35:51

Yes I have done those merlot. The aubergine was great but I am crap not very good at meatballs and they fall apart and end up as spicy mince.
Managed to track down a cauliflower today so will try the roast over the weekend.

merlotgran Fri 13-May-16 14:50:48

The cauliflower was delicious, mamie but DH thought it was a bit dry so next time I'll steam it for a few minutes before roasting.

Tonight we're having Lamb and sour cherry meatballs with a tomato sauce from Persiana. I think I'll also try Persiana's chargrilled aubergines with saffron yoghurt. I am out of yoghurt but have some fromage frais that needs using.

I love picking bits and pieces out of Persiana recipes and using them with other ingredients. There's such a lot to choose from.

Mamie Fri 13-May-16 14:39:41

grin

Anya Fri 13-May-16 14:31:57

Quite probably Mamie unless there was something untoward baked into the cake!!!

Mamie Fri 13-May-16 13:29:54

Enjoy it - it is a lovely recipe. smile
We had a bizarre experience last night. Some friends came for dinner and brought a lovely cake from the patisserie which we ate and enjoyed. We then both had a dreadful night with busy brain, racing heart and hot flushes (me). Reaction to sugar?
Tonight we are having sausages including plain pork, merguez and a pork sausage with cheese in it and I am doing a salad of broccoli, roasted red pepper and avocado.

BBbevan Fri 13-May-16 11:35:23

Aubergine cheesecake tonight with Za'atar. Which I finally got from Amazon

Blinko Thu 12-May-16 14:00:02

Thanks, BBevan, I'll take a look.

Mamie Wed 11-May-16 05:48:16

Riverwalk thanks for the reminder about the aubergine cheesecake. Couldn't think what to have last night, but had everything for that apart from cream cheese, so I improvised with a bit of blue, bit of goat and a bit of squidgy French stuff from the fridge collection. grin
Tonight we are having monkfish with garlic and sherry with cauliflower (we are going to grow them this year!) with saffron, pinenuts and raisins. All from the Moro book.

shysal Tue 10-May-16 11:44:29

I did wonder about the date syrup. I have some vanilla Stevia drops which I use when I really need sweetness. The TV dessert was served hot, but agree it would be nice with the mousse.
