A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

* tiredoldwoman* what fantastic news. Well done. flowers

seacliff Tue 03-May-16 19:46:54

That's fantastic, tiredoldwoman, you must be feeling great! Your perseverance paid off.

I know what you mean about being scared to weigh in case it's disappointing.

If it was me, I'd have thought the scales had broken! Wonderful smile

Lazigirl Tue 03-May-16 18:47:27

Well done Tiredoldwoman. I'm similar to you Shysal only creeping down v e r y slowly. I think I need to try smaller portions AND water instead of beer! I have lost 8lbs but it's taken about 10 weeks. Shall you change your name to Slimoldwoman now Tiredow?

shysal Tue 03-May-16 17:41:13

Brilliant, tiredoldwoman, I wish I could say the same. It hasn't worked for me but I shall persevere.

Izabella Tue 03-May-16 17:33:42

Well done tiredoldwoman

I've been trying to lose weight since the New Year , gave up looking at the scales, the readings dropped me into a depression . Nothing was happening , the 5.2 didn't move the blubber, the 800 cal made me put on weight , my metabolism seemed to have gone crazy ? Well today , I weighed myself - joy of joys I've suddenly lost 2stone 5lbs ! I thought clothes were getting loose but was terrified to go on the scales for fear of a disappointment . LCHF has worked for me !!

aquagran Tue 03-May-16 11:59:08

Ok, will do. Thank you.

BBbevan Tue 03-May-16 11:42:52

* aquagran* the symptoms you describe are common when starting a LCHF diet. Go to the Diet Doctor web site and that will set your mind at rest and give some suggestions. Good Luck

I apologise if light headedness has already been discussed on this inspirational thread, I haven't read it all, but can anybody help? I have only been on a low carb diet for two days, and this morning I am spaced out. I really want to succeed on this diet, but feel I am falling at the first hurdle. Any advice please?

We had an early dinner today as it is a fast day and DH was wilting around the edges. We had O'Kelly salmon from the 5:2book. Delicious
DH seems to have joined me nearly full time.shock

Izabella Mon 02-May-16 14:26:10

Actually Shysal that's not a bad idea thanks.

shysal Mon 02-May-16 09:48:03

Izabella, I use the old-fashioned way of counting calories, carbs etc., with this book, which is set out alphabetically and comprehensively. I bought it from Amazon.

DH's birthday so took him to our local Balti house which had just reopened after a fire. We passed on the rice and naam bread and didn't miss it a bit. Had a couple of other side dishes such as saag and mushroom bhajis instead - which unlike the onion bhajis are not battered.

BBbevan Mon 02-May-16 07:42:15

Izabella. I'm sure Amazon do a carb counter app. Or just google it. Good luck.

whitewave Sun 01-May-16 22:16:40

Sorry I haven't a clue either. Why not read the write ups on the star thingys?

Izabella Sun 01-May-16 22:00:44

Yes, but there are so many to choose from and the diabetes element means I do need to be OTT . I Was hoping someone could point me in the right direction

It is amazing how much sweetness there is is some foods. I find parsnips and sweet potatoes really sweet.

I think milk is naturally sweet to encourage mammals to suckle, which is why we notice the sweetness I guess.

I had a few days' 'break' in Norfolk, cleaning DD's house and putting up flatpack furniture for their new baby, due early June. Went out to eat: Japanese, tapas, then Indian takeaway. Oh dear: rice....carbs....

I was good at breakfast and lunch though. Cooked breakfast but no toast and no muesli. And I made a big salad for lunches, with avocado and egg. Put on a kilo, and after a fast it's nearly gone again :-D

Had a small piece of cake when out with DH and DGD. Still can't quite kick the habit! No bread though. I'll keep trying....

BBbevan Sun 01-May-16 19:34:29

* Izabella* Try Amazon? They have most everything. I don't use one myself. Too much faffing around for me

Izabella Sun 01-May-16 18:02:56

Does anyone use a carb counter app. Or know of one please?

BBbevan Sun 01-May-16 17:59:26

whitewave it is interesting ,is it not, not feeling hungry when you give up sugar? I had a very small glass of semi- skimmed milk yesterday and it tasted quite sweet. I still fantasise about a really good cup of coffee with sugar and cream.

Mamie Sun 01-May-16 16:12:43

Really pleased it is helping seacliff. Enjoy the birthday merlot.
We have been on the village walk and picnic. Took soup and a salad (which came in for intense scrutiny from my French friends) pearled spelt, avo, toms, cucumber, garlic sausage and beetroot. Tested a piece each of my chocolate tiffin and then the rest of the village ate all of it. Had to decline, cider, calva, apple juice (all home-made), madeleines in all flavours, quiches and a very smelly game paté. The weather was fine and the walk was good.
We have to go to the chosen spot very slooowly in convoy, which makes OH angry.

whitewave Sun 01-May-16 16:08:02

We have cut out sugar entirely at the moment, and I am surprised that we never feel hungry. It seems sugar has a stimulating effect on you appetite?

whitewave Sun 01-May-16 16:06:14

Gammon stew today with carrots, celery and swede, cabbage added last few minutes. Not bad at all.

This evening peppers stuffed with mush room and tomato and onions sprinkled with Parmesan and pine nuts.

Just back from a short break so I'd rather not talk about what I ate blush

seacliff Sun 01-May-16 15:53:22

Just to Earsham Hall nr Bungay in Suffolk - run by the Lions - classic cars, usual stalls, live music - lovely country park. It was so hot, from the weather forecast I thought it would be an awful weekend.
