A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.

You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

There is one blade (I think) but it just drops straight out. There is also a plastic whisk attached to a lid with no bottom hmm
My MiL used to whisk egg whites with a knife so she said
The only thing you can rely on in this house is that you will find every conceivable accoutrement for preparing drinks. Ice buckets, cocktail shakers and about 100 glasses..,,

Im struggling a bit. Did paleo last year and lost nearly two stone. Have maintained that but cant seem to get myself back in the grove. Im really into nutrition and clean eating and want to be the best version of me I can. I have another 2 stone to lose and keep thinking I should go on another "diet" but if diets worked they would have worked years ago for me and they didn't. Grrrrr!!

Help please....remind me of the benefits of this way of eating.

Well for us, sustained weight loss, me off BP tablets, OH off statins and out of pre-diabetes. We have found it easy to stick to for two years and love what we eat.
No violent exercise, no calorie counting, no pain and suffering.
Tonight was spicy barbecued pork chops, asparagus and mushrooms (but we are on holiday in Spain). grin

I'm very happy on my low-carb regime. I'm not really strict and have porridge for breakfast and include carby veg like parsnips but not potatoes, bread, pasta or rice.
My waist is now almost down to the desirable 32" and today I discovered I've lost another half-stone (since mid November).
Not focussing on weight loss but on inch loss. No tummy-bloating now I've abandoned all flour products.
Very much enjoying gym sessions too.
I have more energy and just feel generally 'better'.
I don't see this as a diet /short term fix. I've just changed how I eat.

Thanks Mamie and mcem . I was just cooking dinner, chicken stir fry with loads of veg, garlic, soy sauce, ginger and lemon and had a good talk to myself. I actually stopped dieting about 15 years ago because of a book I read and starting mindful eating. This worked for the 15 years and I never gained weight. I then started eating a couple of biscuits here and there and weight gain started. Menopause also started. Found that it got harder even though I didn't eat much. Just ate the wrong things. Read about insulin resistance and paleo and started on this way. The loss has been slow and steady and I still have the occasional treat (like homemade white chips) and eating out. I don't drink alcohol and don't eat dairy at all.

Thanks for the reminder of why this works for me. As you have both said.
No calorie counting, measuring. No bloating or pain. Getting smaller. More energy and constantly feeling of lightness. Unlike when I eat carbs and feel heavy and poisoned.

Just to say that there is a very interesting webchat on Mumsnet with Dr Michael Mosley.
It is mostly about dealing with T2 diabetes, but lots of interesting low-carb stuff.

Very interesting. I didn't know though that Michael Mosley had never actually practised as a doctor, so the 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' is a tad disingenuous hmm

I wonder if one of you could help with giving me an idiots starting point for this. I am hypothyroid and seem to be getting to the point where the thyroxin dose is about right. I have lost a little weight and a lot of puffiness (other organs seem to be performing rather better) but as the weight is going down it is staying on my tummy so a low carb diet should help I feel. But where to start ...

Jings, there were two problems with that study. One it was not low-carb and two humans are not mice. Apart from that......

Am so grateful to this thread as have just been diagnosed pre diabetic, which has shocked me as I am not overweight, well only a bit hmm and thought was reasonably fit and would live forever - a good bit longer anyway. I have got lots of ideas now & intend to start right away. Only prob is that OH probably won't want similar diet. Any suggestions? Am no domestic goddess and shorter time labouring over hot stove the better.

Yes I think you can make it work Lazigirl.
It is a bit of extra work, but if you substitute cauliflower mash for potato mash, ditto rice, courgetti for spaghetti, celeriac chips for potato etc, you can do it with a minimum of fuss. Don't eat the naan or rice with curry, have salad instead of sandwiches, no bread with soup etc.
We are both on the way of eating, but I don't find it difficult when we are away.

Lazigirl OH has got completely out of pre-diabetes on this way of eating and sustained the low levels for over a year now. It can be done!

Thanks for hints Mamie. I intend to start tonight. Have ordered 8-week diet and hope can gradually and surreptitiously convert OH. We do eat quite healthily now so am sure could do with a bit of effort, but weekend alcohol may have to be reduced.......

I am a beer drinker Mamie, but if your OH has managed to reduce blood sugar, without becoming teetotal this cheers me up enormously. I can manage to swap the beer for the odd glass of wine smile

Strangely enough none of our French doctors have ever suggested cutting down on wine.....
The one who has now retired used to tell us about bargains in the local supermarket. grin

We had 'Stir Fried Pork with Cashew Nuts and Greens' last night. The 'greens' were Pak Choi. It took 15 minutes to prepare, about the same to cook.

The recipe was to serve 4 but I made the full amount and we are it all. So long as there's very little or no carbs in a recipe we don't bother about halving amounts. I've several recipes where I substitute mushrooms for potatoes eg Mediterranean Chicken.

Mr A's blood glucose is in the normal range ( he too was pre-diabetic).

I am led to believe that some people who appear thin are actually TOFI (thin outside, fat inside) in other words their fat is deposited around their internal organs, called visceral fat, and this can make them more prone to developing Type 2 diabetes. Mr A's visceral fat has plummeted to 13.5% since being on this diet ...he just needs to get it below 12% so you can see he's well on the way.

That's so encouraging Anya. Will have to get rid of all the pasta, rice etc. It needs to be a whole new way of eating doesn't it? Do you drink alcohol? Don't want to lose all treats sad
