A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.

You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

BBbevan, I buy Pork Crunch which are lighter puffed-up scratchings with no hairs and kinder to the teeth. At 120 calories a packet they are a good low carb alternative to crisps. I buy them at my local Co-op.

I suggest you fill up before you go to the meal, then eat the bare minimum while you are there. Would you be reluctant to just explain about the diet?

As it's a tea and presumably in between your lunch and dinner you won't go hungry so you'll just have to eat the minimum to be sociable and drink plenty of tea!

Afternoon tea - all those sarnies and cakes, a nightmare for us low-carbies!

Thank you everyone. I will plan an afternoon tea for one day in the future. We have got Easter to negotiate next. I made two Simnel cakes yesterday , for my son and daughter and didn't lick the spoon once.

OH has just cooked Shakshuka for supper. Absolutely delicious. It is basically a vegetarian recipe, but he added chorizo.

Shakshuka is one of the first successful dishes I made when I started LCHF, although it was a different recipe. Lots of variations are around and it works well for us because we like tomato based sauces - not the peppers though! grin

Taken just on 3 weeks , a la Dr. Mosley. I have not felt hungry at all and feel really good in myself.

Brilliant BB! I think I should try being a bit stricter, lost nothing over last week or so. I have been doing low calorie on alternate days.

Shysal I shouldn't think that would work...alternate days I mean. It's just not that sort of diet.

MM suggests doing it as a 5:2, but it would be slower, so I am giving alternate days a try, eating low carb all the time. I need to cut down my portions on the 'eating' days.

It's been a funny old day. I went to a coffee and hot cross bun Easter thingy at the Church. I did NOT have a bun, but some people thought it amusing to waft a few under my nose.
Still I managed..

Enjoying my dinner. I made a 'macaroni cheese' using courgetti and cheesy cauliflower puree as the sauce, with a few pieces of bacon. Sprinkled with cheese and browned in oven.

Well done BB for resisting the buns. Aren't people cruel sometimes?

Well done BBbevan for resisting. Must try that shysal, sounds like a good lunch dish too.
We got lovely red mullet in the market yesterday. We normally do summery things like tapenade with it, but yesterday was so cold that I made a tagine with chermoula paste, squash, courgette, onion, tomato, preserved lemon and olives and popped the fish fillets on top for five minutes at the end. As we had last summer's minestrone for lunch I think we had about 493 of our five a day. grin

Must join you people. Went above 14 stone although lost a bit now.it is all round my waist and I hate it. What do you find helps?

Loopy loo, a no or very low carb diet. Get Dr.Michael Mosley's book. My bible at the moment.

Love tapenade especially with fish.

Here's a simple fish recipe for new low-carbers...

Salmon fillet
generously top with pesto (best from chilled Italian section - jars not as nice)
Wrap loosely in foil
Cook in oven 200oC for 20 minutes

Serve with favourite veg (we like roast peppers, onions, etc)

Tip

Do extra. Have cold for lunch following day.
