I’m a pear !

I have returned to my own healthy eating plan as I need to lose a stone. I am pear shaped with a small bust, reasonable waist and overlarge hips.

On reading the ever sensible Dr Scurr in the DM this morning I discovered a healthy waist size is 31 ins for women and 37 ins for men. I rather smugly measured myself expecting a pat on the back only to find I am 5 ins over the recommended size ?

Onward and upward or preferably downward.

I ignore much of the advice and eat and drink what I want BUT in much smaller quantities than before. I choose not to eat sugary doughnuts but if I wanted one I would have it.

I make sure 5 or 6 days a week I go out for a 20 minute or more walk.

Doris I am similar to you in height and weight and think it is ridiculous that we are deemed over weight on the BMI scale. If I was 8 or 9 stone, I would look old and haggard. So stick with what suits you.

NfkDumpling Mon 08-Oct-18 09:55:10

I have this bulge in front which rather indicates I need to loose about a stone, but I agree, if I lost enough to be on the right bit of the chart I would (and have) looked haggard and been on starvation rations permanently.

Having just been away for a week in the caravan, I’ve walked miles, done loads of hills and steps, tried to eat reasonably sensibly - and have put on a couple of pounds. I put it down to eating out at lunchtime. A hike in the morning and I can’t resist a half pint of lager with lunch! Back to the grind to loose it again!

oldbatty Mon 08-Oct-18 09:57:38

Right, no more messing about. On the scales this morning and it said 10 stone 9 lbs. I am not tall. Monday is weigh day and things have got to change.

merlotgran Mon 08-Oct-18 10:17:21

Another 1lb off!! Thank goodness for the lovely weather we're having at the moment otherwise I'd be struggling. I'm an outdoor person so winter is my downfall.

For me, eating and drinking what I like but in smaller quantities just didn't work. I know the old adage is, 'Eat less, move more' but I had to give up sugary foods completely as well as cut down on dairy products.

My Sunday treat of a small scoop of Aldi's Gianni vanilla ice cream topped with fruit is my one weakness. grin

The BMI scale is confusing and seems to set impossible targets. I apparently need to lose 4st in total. I've lost nearly 2st and gone down to a size 14 from 16 (trousers) and 18 (tops) but I'm 5'7" so I'm happy to slog and and try for a 3st loss but FOUR?? shock

Ho Hum!

Billybob4491 Mon 08-Oct-18 16:58:06

Well done Merlot, a lb is a lb. If I took notice of the BMI scale and got down to the required weight, I would look entirely skeletal! My friend who is a nurse said it is only a general guide. (hope this makes you feel better)

Got round to weighing myself at last. I am technically overweight - 5ft 2in and 10st 1lb - and should lose about a stone. But like others I think I would look ill! So I’m going for 7lbs weight loss as my goal and will try to cut carbs. I’ve tried the 16:8 but it didn’t work for me, the 5:2 did but I hated the low calorie days so much. I feel quite bloated from time to time so am going to try low carb as I really like most low carb foods. Any advice would be welcome!

1lb is good merlotgran , I stayed the same this week....

fourormore Thu 11-Oct-18 11:52:45

Ooops! Fellow strugglers I have sinned! Midweek last week I came out in a stonker of a head cold and have been thoroughly miserable sad sad sad no no no more sad than that!!! The b****y thing won't go away!
I totally forgot about my Sunday weigh-in but I did have a peek last night and feel I have put on a couple of pounds? I am not counting it as an 'official' weigh in because it's not Sunday but I will weigh in again next Sunday and report my misdemeanours to you all. It is best to weigh at the same time and day each week.
I know it's a good excuse but why we do always fancy the wrong things when we are feeling cr*p?

Panache Thu 11-Oct-18 12:35:27

Making a visit at long last (heartily ashamed for my silence) but sadly folks, the same old tale, weight loss!
Whilst taking ensure foods alongside whatever I manage to eat....... but no sign of gain.

However I heartily agree with you on the fact losing too much can leave you looking very haggard, best stick to what you...........and not the scales..........denote,though by all means do not hog too many extra pounds...................or better still, send them over to pad me up!!

NanKate Thu 11-Oct-18 13:16:31

Very good to have you back Panache we have been keeping your seat warm as you are the official I’m a Pear referee.

I too will weigh myself at the weekend as I have taken my eye off the ball a bit recently. ?

fourormore Thu 11-Oct-18 15:24:47

Weyheeeey! Welcome back Panache you've been missed!
We were all rooting for you while you were poorly so it's really good to have you back!
I wish I could send you some of my excess padding but you are absolutely correct in that we need to go more by what is right for us rather than what the scales or 'experts' say!
flowersflowersflowersflowersflowersflowersfor continued good health to us all!

NfkDumpling Thu 11-Oct-18 21:25:28

Nice to see you back Panache - may you grow and thrive.

I’m on a looser today as I was out mid morning with no chance of lunch until half two so I had a snack before I left. Then DH produced scampi and chips for dinner this evening as he was late back (He does the cooking). Luckily I’d lost a pound yesterday so that’ll be back tomorrow!

oldbatty Sun 14-Oct-18 16:05:45

I'm in despair. I have just been out with a friend who is very very slim and sitting next to her, I feel like a beached whale.

I genuinely do not eat a great deal but feel there is no chance of losing weight and this might be who I am from here on in.

fourormore Mon 15-Oct-18 15:13:38

Bless you Oldbatty you and I are in the same boat!
I feel that whatever I do I am going to stay in the 178-182lb area sadwhen I should be nearer the 160lb mark.
I didn't weigh last Sunday morning as I was poorly sick with a stonking head cold. Over the past ten days or so I have been taking lemon/honey and other various potions (containing goodness knows how much sugar!!!) and because my taste was all confused I was eating the wrong things too - just eating what I fancied rather than watching the numbers!
In the last two weeks I have put on 0.8 of a pound in spite of my naughty eating and no gym/swim at all.hmm
Life just isn't fair is it!
Good luck to all fellow strugglers as we start another week.
Don't give up Oldbattyflowerswe will survive!

oldbatty Mon 15-Oct-18 15:53:12

four or more..... You don't do stones and lbs? I might do kilos, the number then becomes smaller!!! ?

merlotgran Mon 15-Oct-18 15:58:33

I'm joining the frustrated club today having put 2lbs back on because we had visitors at the weekend. Too much to eating and drinking and sitting around chatting. When they'd gone I was so tired I just slumped in front of the telly.

So I'm back on the diet with a vengeance today. I'm cross because I only had 2lbs to go to my 2 stone target and now it's 4lbs. angry

GAH!!

fourormore Mon 15-Oct-18 17:13:11

Oldbatty my scales only show pounds and the decimal point of pounds - I don't do kilos and that foreign stuffgrin It takes too long to lose a kilo!
There is method in my madness though - I have an excel chart on my laptop measuring drops of O.2 of a pound.
If I lose a pound it looks great to drop five spaces!!!
Each Sunday I colour in the graph up to that day's weight and even a loss of O.2 registers a drop haha!
Desperate or what grin

Overthehills Tue 16-Oct-18 22:15:19

First weigh in yesterday and I’d lost three pounds. I know this won’t continue etc etc but I’m encouraged to keep going when I see a bit of progress. I always have a couple of days with no wine or g&t every week but am trying to make it three or four now. However DiL is coming on Thursday and we do like a chat over a glass of red - wish me luck!

NanKate Wed 17-Oct-18 07:57:42

Well done Overthehills 3lbs is a very decent weight loss. Onwards and downwards.

merlotgran Wed 17-Oct-18 10:54:21

Well done, Overthehills. Of course it will continue. Think positive thoughts!! grin

Buffybee Thu 18-Oct-18 12:55:43

I'm so annoyed with myself.
I do tend to swing 1.5 stone up and down and had lost it all and felt really good on my holiday in July. I promised myself that this time I would stay slim and in control.
Since then, the weight has quite quickly returned and I feel so fat and bloated.
I lost it with the 5/2 and once I'd got "in the zone" found it easy and actually quite enjoyable, in that I could go out with friends for a meal and relax one day and "pull it back" the next.
Why am I here?
Well, I just CAN NOT find the will to start again. It's always, I'll start tomorrow or I'll start next Monday.
It's getting me down!
Had anyone got any tips to find my "will" again, if not a quick kick up the bottom would do! ?

NanKate Thu 18-Oct-18 14:01:14

We all go through bad patches Buffy you are just human.

I now have a healthy eating plan based on the NHS 12 week diet plan online except for me it is for life. When I go out this coming Monday night for supper I will eat what I want. If for any reason I have had a more indulgent couple of days I don't dwell on it I just revert to the Eating Plan the next day. Dieting is a mental game and nothing to do with hunger IMO.

Best of luck.

NanKate Thu 18-Oct-18 14:14:05

Meant to say Buffy when I need a sweet tasting hit I have a Sula Mint Humbug bought at Waitrose for just 9 calories. I water down all my drinks. 7 Up Free which is a lemonade drink is very refreshing. I also water this down as they use sweeteners and it is advised not to have much in your diet.

Billybob4491 Thu 18-Oct-18 16:10:29

Off to the Fat Club tomorrow for my usual weigh in, my weekly torture.

Buffybee Thu 18-Oct-18 19:39:46

Thanks NanKate!
I've decided today to buy the 5/2 Book, I did it last time from an article in a magazine.
If I buy the book it will give me the impetus to start again.
