Do you think it would be possible to make the batter with coconut flour or almond flour? I haven't tried but have noticed some supermarkets stock these flours. I think they would work well with cherries but don't know if it would be necessary to add baking powder.

BBbevan Tue 03-Jul-18 16:37:54

You an make pancakes with coconut, buckwheat or almond flour. I would give them a try with clafoutis batter Lazigirl

Mamie Tue 03-Jul-18 16:46:04

Almond flour is an interesting thought. Without any sugar?

Lazigirl Tue 03-Jul-18 20:22:37

I'm having another 'use up contents of fridge/freezer and cupboard' week.

Breakfast was shakshuka made with frozen mixed peppers and frozen red onion.

Lunch will be Aberdeen angus burger which has been lurking in the freezer for a while, tomato & feta salad.

Tonight's a challenge but likely to include tinned tuna and wine

Hi Ladies
I would like to join you in going lc. Like others, have done it before but gradually got out of the way of it. Be nice to share and hear how you are all getting on. It certainly has been great weather for salads.

Mamie Sun 22-Jul-18 19:50:38

Welcome Googoogool.
We are also having a lot of salads and finally getting some tomatoes which have been slow to ripen despite weeks of 30°. It was a bit cooler today so we had roast tarragon chicken and roast courgette.
In our organic supermarket this week I found dark chocolate with only 3.5g of sugar per 100g. Haven't tried it yet!

BBbevan Sun 22-Jul-18 21:03:55

Just found an enormous courgette lurking under the leaves. I swear it wasn't there yesterday. I shall make a lasagne using it instead of pasta. I was going to try courgettes and ginger jam but DH has misappropriated all my saved jars for his paint brushes. Never mind. I couldn't have eaten it anyway.
Welcome *Googoogool. Hope you enjoy this thread. Lots of help, support and recipes

Welcome Googoogoo1. What an unusual name. Yes it's certainly great weather for salads, sadly also for cold beers! Really good inspiration and ideas for meals here. Mamie who has yummy fare, spends much time growing delicious stuff and eating it. (I am jealous). All my food comes from M&S! Even my mint has died this year. sad

Can I ask you lovely ladies for your help please? My daughter really needs to lose weight and has started the low carb diet. We have a family lunch coming up and I wondered if you could suggest a nice dessert I could make? It gets a bit complicated as I have to follow the FODMAP diet so am unable to eat any stone fruit which rules out peaches, plums, cherries and apples etc. Hoping you can help because my mind has stopped at strawberries and cream.

Mamie Thu 26-Jul-18 04:58:09

It is difficult with puddings. I make a very intense chocolate mousse with eggs, very dark chocolate and cream and I also often do bowl of red fruit with cream. I am about to make strawberry ice-cream today, but will probably need to use a tiny bit of sugar. A big cheese board is good too. There is a recipe on this site somewhere for brownies made with pear, almonds and dates.
Hope this helps.

I need some advice too please. My DD is also trying the low carb way to lose weight. She has done 3-4 weeks now and says she has lost no weight but her clothes feel looser. What may she be doing wrong? I know she has a very stressful, sedentary job . Any ideas please ?

jamsidedown Thu 26-Jul-18 08:00:59

Hello, can I join in too please? Is anyone else a pescatarian? I’m finding it hard to get my head round the full fat bit of this diet, I thought it was just a case of cutting out bread, pasta, rice etc? And how many carbs is low - do you use MyFitnessPal to calculate? Sorry for all the newbie questions!

Mamie Thu 26-Jul-18 14:55:50

Hi jamsidedown. The Diet Doctor is the best place to start.
www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb
You need the full-fat things partly because low-fat often has added sugar and also to keep you from feeling hungry. The basic (simplified) theory as I understand it, is that if you eat fat and carbs you burn the carbs and keep the fat. If you leave out the carbs you burn the fat more slowly and don't feel as hungry. We eat a lot of fish and enjoy sauces like hollondaise and bearnaise with just green veg as an accompaniment. Last night was lobster and mayonnaisewith salad but that was a treat!
BB could it be fluid retention? Sometimes takes a while to sort out.

teabagwoman Thu 26-Jul-18 15:15:18

Thanks Mamie, chocolate mousse sounds like a good idea.

BBbevan Thu 26-Jul-18 16:21:53

Yes , I think you may be right Mamie. Thanks.
teabagwoman. Tom Kerridge lost a lot of weight on low-carb. His book 'The Dopamine Diet' has low-carb puddings. Tiramisu, Creme Brûlée.and others Worth getting from the library anyway.

BBbevan Thu 26-Jul-18 20:04:56

teabagwoman have a look at Tom Kerridge's Dopamine diet. Lots of low carb puddings. Tiramisu, creme brûlée, chocolate mousse. I believe he lost 11stone going low carb.

BBbevan Thu 26-Jul-18 20:05:46

Sorry folks. Heat must have got to me.

jamsidedown Fri 27-Jul-18 08:03:21

Thank you for the explanation Mamie, ill look at dietdoctor. Can you tell me how much fat is required - I use MyFitnessPal.

jamsidedown Fri 27-Jul-18 08:04:09

Oh, and I don’t eat meat, but I do eat fish, so I’ve been eating a lot of salmon!

Mamie Fri 27-Jul-18 10:10:43

I can't be specific about how much fat rally jamsidedown.
I think that you have to think of this as a way of eating rather than a diet. Basically you cut out sugar, flour, potatoes, rice and pasta and limit fruit and vegetables from below the ground. You don't count calories or measure things.
I don't think there is one starting soon but the low-carb bootcamps on Mumsnet are helpful on a step by step approach.

I have just begun a second round of Michael Mosley’s Blood Sugar Diet, in an attempt to further lower blood sugars and cholesterol; also to lose my final couple of stone.
Breakfast today is a two-egg mushroom omelette and I have had home made green vegetable soup for lunch. Dinner will be lettuce tacos with mince beef. The whole is about 850 calories. I know many people have had great success on this diet, so am really positive about this. My blood sugar has already levelled out and reduced after only 2 days and finally I am with a supportive GP practice. Wish me luck!

Mamie Mon 30-Jul-18 14:41:21

Good luck Rilla (love the user name ?).
It is only 25° today so I have made a sauce with minced lamb and tomatoes and will put it in a courgette with grated parmesan. Back to 30° tomorrow so won't be using the oven if I can help it.

RillaofIngleside Tue 31-Jul-18 08:41:49

I have done 2 days of very low carb now. Blood sugars have stabilised and not gone out of target range at all. And I have already lost 1.5 lbs, so feeling positive?
Today I am having
Cherries, melon and whole Greek yoghurt for breakfast.
Halloumi and asparagus salad for lunch
Mustard and Garlic prawns for supper.
880 cals
Not sure about the carbs in cherries, will have to see how they affect me. They are so lovely this year though.
I am interested to see how other people are getting on.
Mamie, are you low caring for a particular reason?
