On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.
However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.
We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.
Do join us the rules are simple.
Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.
So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.
You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.
Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.
So Onward and Downward girls ??
PS. I'm 80 years old, but it's never too late to lose the flab.
annodomini we are all shapes and sizes and all ages. Doesn't matter what matters is we are here for eachother. Since I joined I have found nothing be warmth and friendship and support not just losing weight but in my life in general. Hope you stay with us.
Hello! I'd like to join you, if that's ok?
I have gained a lot of weight in lockdown, partly because I haven't left the house other than for medical appointments, and partly because of an underactive thyroid.
I've always carried any excess weight round my middle, so apple rather than pear, but for the first time I now have fat on my arms as well. None of my clothes look good, which is not the end of the world in lockdown, but it's depressing, unhealthy, and anyway, lockdown might be ending soon-sh.
Doodledog welcome . If you have read the thread you see NanKate started a excellent thread. Look forward to reading your posts and everyone else's who have joined.
Just off to make some marmalade. Or as I call it doing a Paddington.
Stay safe everyone.,?
16:8 fail this morning. OH had made some marmalade so I HAD to try some on toast for breakfast. That was the start of a bad day, 2 Time Outs and a small Kit Kat. On the plus side I only had pumpkin soup for lunch.
chelseababy if you add up the calories of what you ate you will probably surprise yourself that it's not as bad as you thought. I count calories . I weigh everything and measure my drinks . Try that tomorrow and you will surprise yourself with how much you can eat. For whatever calorie allowance you decide on . NHS has a calculator you input your age ,height weight and it gives you a range to follow.
Don't be hard on yourself and it's not a fail just a blip. Tomorrow is a new day.
Just googled 16:8 as didn't understand what that diet was. I know some people lose weight doing it but it wouldn't work for me. I don't understand how you can restrict yourself to only eat in an 8 hour time slot and the foods it's states to eat seems limited to me. But perhaps I am wrong.
Wide awake since 5 so put the brisket on to cook for my stew. I like to simmer it for 3 hours . Let it cool and remove all the fat and leave the stock to cool overnight and skim off any fat. Tomorrow add veg to stock and shred the beef and cook for another 90mins. That's 6 dinners sorted.
Have a good day everyone.
Good morning ladies,
I’m really fed-up today - I have tried really hard this week to get those scales to shift, but stubbornly they sit - no loss AGAIN, I’m trying to be positive and see no gain as a good thing but am at a loss to know what to do.
One spot of good news this week is that they’ve offered my DD a vaccination due to her gestational diabetes. After much discussion and thought she’s decided to take it, so that will be both her and her husband who works in a hospice vaccinated. Just my husband and I still waiting now.
Welcome to the new joiners this week, it’s good to see you on the journey with us. This is the friendliest thread I’ve found on gransnet, full of support!
Hope you all have a good week ?
Sarah you have hit a plateau. Just concentrate now on keeping stable, don’t beat yourself up. ?
Good morning all and welcome to everyone who joined?.
I have put on 1/2 lbs. Not surprising to me as not being very strict!
It was just a hiccup Chelsea and Whiff is right sometimes over a day the calories are not as bad as you think. If you've had a,bad day the important thing is to just start again the next day.
I think there are disadvantages and advantages to who you live with when on a diet. If you live with a partner or family members temptation is always there and sometimes it's just to hard to resist. I live on my own and the big advantage is I can make sure there is no temptation in the house. I must admit at the moment I am however totally sick of my own cooking! The last time I ate anything prepared by another person was last August, a sausage sandwich, and it tasted wonderful! There are times I feel that even something as simple as a sandwich tastes so much nicer !
Like Whiff I cook in bulk so have something healthy and tasty in the freezer. I have a ton of cookery books and I'm not a bad cook. Tbh I have such a variety of foods in the freezer etc I could make anything. I've tried new recipes, ingredients etc. Yet I'm bored. If you asked me what dish I would really fancy if it would magically appear in front of me I genuinely cant think of one!
In an attempt to excite my taste buds I have resorted to ready meals, not something I'm normally in favour of due to often high salt content. 8 have enjoyed an Aunt Bessies vegetarian toad in the hole as that's something not easy to make for one and it was under 400 calories.!
I must admit,in the past boredom of treats is often a good indicator it's time to be strict with myself!
I do have several things motivating me.
Spring feels as though it's on it's way. It has been a unique year. I dont think I'm alone in that as I was at home I did a lot of comfort eating(and baking) and put on weight. Again ,like many the extended period of wearing comfy clothes not good. Fortunately when I did go into the office i managed to find suitable outfits that still fitted, but i wasnt happy with how i looked. This is a massive incentive that niggles at the back of my mind.
Through work we have access to a health and wellbeing APP. I had a look during my lunch hour. It's nothing particularly novel, health assessments then setting goals but it was quite focusing. I've set goals that maybe I would overlook a bit such as ensuring I'm hydrated and focusing on increasing my exercise. I'm terrible at doing exercise and WFH has really not helped! Time to dust off the Miranda Hart exercise dvd which is the only one I've ever enjoyed!
Your beef sounds lovely Whiff, and I love the idea of you doing a paddington!
Sarahmob I hope things change soon, its so frustrating.
So onwards and hopefully downwards ladies! Apparently on the app I joined you can also have a virtual coach. I think I'm much better off here! ?
Another week of staying the same. But at least it's not a gain. Must get back to doing my exercises. As I always feel better afterwards.
Sarah like NanKate says you have hit a plateau and just stick with it . You are an inspiration. I greatly admire how much you have lost . Glad your daughter and son in law have both had their vaccine.
Dorset it's a blip. One thing I never get bored with is cooking. I make Yorkshire puds in a muffin tin 12 at a time counting oil for cooking work out at 74 cals each 2 Quorn sausages cooked are only 154 cals plus loads of veg and 10g gravy granulas 35 cals. I freeze the York puds that way always have them to hand. Hope you are enjoying your new job.
Take care everyone ?
Dorset you are so right - it does depend on who you live with as well as other factors. I am honestly not complaining but my DH does most of our cooking - long standing arrangement that goes back years when he was home and I was working. I can't get him to let me even do an odd meal! Bless him, he does do a good job and I promise I am not complaining but there is a lot of 'convenience food and he has also found a source of broken biscuits! They are not necessarily 'broken' just misshaped etc. They come in a large box!
It is my fault as willpower is all that is required but it seems to be in short supply
I have put on 1lb this week and I know it is my fault as I only have to say 'No' but it would hurt his feelings if I tried to take over the catering officer's job and so I just try and not have too much of the naughty things and add extra veg!
As long as I stay within the general area I am persevering but not beating myself up - if we do that, that's when we hit the comfort food!
Keep going - Sarah it is a plateau and one day there will be a drop again - so don't give up.
Welcome to our new members too!!!
Good luck everyone

Well thank you Nan Kate and Whiff. I’ve counted calories for the first time in years and ye I’ve lost 2lb
I don’t feel deprived and have had some treats. I’ve also upped my water intake and walked more now it is a bit milder.
Im determined to keep going.
Hi to all new people and hope you have a good week
Hello, I am an apple shape, I have stick thin arms and legs, no hips and bum to speak of. All my weight seems to be from the top of my hips to my neck, lots of back fat. I hate to admit this but my hip size is the same as my waist size ??... anyway I am isolating for 10 days because even though I had Covid back in March and have been vaccinated I tested positive last week. I thought I would definitely put on weight but I have actually lost a pound and I think that is because I haven’t be able to nip to the supermarket to buy the usual rubbish I eat... I know I am quite unusual shape because most women carry their weight on their hips and bums...I actually carry my weight I think more like a man, it’s a good thing I’ve had four children to verify I am female!!
SisterAct glad counting calories worked for you. It's the only way I can do it. Losing 2lb brilliant.
Four it's a blip. I used to buy those biscuits for my mom. They come in a large box. She used to get excited about what was in them. She was a devil for biscuits, home made cake and chocolate. But didn't put weight on after my dad died. She lost 2st through grief and it never went back on no matter what she ate.
Unfortunately my grief weight loss went back on plus extra.
When my dad retired he wanted to take over all the cooking so mom let him. They shared housework. But he did the garden and decorating. Didn't iron mom didn't trust him. She cleaned the car . Only dad drove. Thanks for bringing back those memories Four. I was smiling while typing this?.
Shinamae will done with the loss. Sorry your tested positive for Covid again. I hope you don't have any of the symptoms. I haven't been to a shop since week before Christmas. I have everything delivered. I do miss going to them but I think why take the risk. When I get the call to go for my jab I will have to pay a visit to Specsavers as the arm has come off a pair of distance glasses and my other pair need tightening so do both pairs of readers.
Be glad when the weather gets better and can tackle the weeds and do some cutting back. Green bin collection starts again on the 8th March.
No Whiff, I had no symptoms last time and no symptoms this time in fact I have just done another lateral flow test and it says negative but as I work in a care home they have to go by the one I have done there a few days ago.... anyway on with the weight loss I do tend to try to do 16/8 and it’s rare I eat anything before 2 o’clock because I’m just not hungry in the morning although I do have a couple of milky coffee is so I am not strictly fasting...
Hello Shinamae and welcome! I’m an apple too, all my weight is around my middle and I’ve got reasonably slim legs and arms. Under bust and belly is a different story ?. I also don’t eat in the morning as I’m not hungry so would assume that counts as 16:2. Hope that you soon recover from COVID and remain symptom free.
Thank you SM......?
My sweet treat secret is natural Medjool Dates. I buy a kilo at a time from Amazon, but I'm sure that they are available in ethnic food shops. Admittedly, one date contains 67 calories but are said to have a low glycaemic index, though I've never been quite sure what that means. I never have more than two a day. Today, my scales registered under 11 stone for the first time in...I can't remember how long, but the spare tyre is still stubbornly there. My waist is still size 16 while my hips are happily 14!
Good thinking Whiff, I had been thinking more of traditional toad in the hole rather than individual Yorkshire's which much better idea! Job going well, start another two weeks of training tomorrow.
Well done Sister Act?. Good luck Shinamae and everyone else. Have a safe and peaceful week?
Weight 129.5 lbs this week, up 0.5 lb and only just below my target 130lbs. I pigged out on peanut butter so will have to stop buying it. Have a great week everyone.
Morning all.....coco I too had to stop buying peanut butter, I just love it....from a jar and a teaspoon ???. Not had peanut butter for over a year now, it’s fatal in my house lol.
Lost 4 and a half this week. Probably the reason being is loads of walking and a new strong big dog....with a blip of feeling really low yesterday ...not really like me.....still, a new day today.....
Have a good week guys....getting spring like, was nice walking out yesterday with coat undone...I think it was more probably because of said new dog wearing us out more than the actual weather temperature lol....
Coco well done staying within target. My son in law has peanut butter and sliced apple everyday after his lunchtime sandwich. He can eat what he likes and never puts an ounce on.
Shirley brilliant weight loss. Wish I had your will power. Unfortunately getting a dog wouldn't help. As not a pet person. But enjoy your walkies or by the sound of it drags . My brother used to have a big dog decades ago and while away my husband used to take it for a walk or drag as he called it.
Had a wonderful afternoon . My daughter and grandson came for me. Saw the rest of the house. It's very big and beautiful. It's in wonderful condition. It's been looked after. Had wonderful time playing with my grandson's and fed the youngest. He's 3 months old now.. They are both getting bigger. They are going to be tall like their dad. Made an apple cake to take with me. That way I can have a piece but not be tempted to each the whole thing.
