On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Good morning everyone, hoping for a better day here today as yesterday it rained nearly all day! Finally got out for a quick walk at half past six although it started to drizzle again before we got home. It was good to get some fresh air and move though.
I’ve had a static week this week, no change which is unsurprising as we enjoyed a treat on Friday. Back on it now and as I keep telling my DH I’m not bothered if the last stone takes until Christmas to shift. Slow and steady will win the race.
This week might be difficult too as it’s my birthday on Wednesday and I do love cake ...
I’m looking forward to getting my second jab this week, it’ll be such a relief. The effect my first one had on my anxiety about going to work was huge and knowing I’ll be fully ‘done’ will be so reassuring.
Tomorrow I’ve booked to take DGS to the farm so I’m hoping for a warm, sunny day. No doubt he’ll have me climbing in and out of all sorts of things. When I tell him Grammy’s too old, he just laughs and tells me that he’ll help me.
Have a good week everyone, hope the scales are kind to you all.

NanKate Sat 08-May-21 11:34:18

Whiff it’s too wet to do anything in the south east ??

Glad you got your second jab, we are getting there ?

Beechnut Sat 08-May-21 11:12:26

?? NanKate I’ve a few months to go yet.

Whiff Sat 08-May-21 11:08:43

NanKate happy thread birthday. I am so glad you started it and I found you all. ???

Should have had my second jab on 31st but they called yesterday and asked me to go this morning. So I've had it. Just going to have a lazy day. To wet to do anything else up here in the north west.

NanKate Sat 08-May-21 07:51:58

What a Wally I am Beechnut I thought it was your birthday today when in fact it was another Gransnetters.

NanKate Sat 08-May-21 07:49:29

And a very happy birthday to you today too Beechnut. I hope you will allow yourself a little treat today. ???

Beechnut Sat 08-May-21 07:21:04

Happy birthday to your thread NanKate. ??

I’ve been doing a little better of late with weight loss I’m glad to say. I have a few aches and pains so have bought myself hiking poles to make walking easier.

NanKate Sat 08-May-21 07:04:50

A Very Happy Birthday Pears and Apples. Yes 3 years ago today I started this thread and never did I think we would still be supporting each other in 2021.

We’ve all had our ups and downs with regard to our weight but we haven’t given up and I hope you all feel better from losing those pounds.

Here’s to another year of I’m a Pear. I couldn’t do it without YOU ?????????

Shirleyw Tue 04-May-21 21:13:46

well done for staying on target coco, not easy is it?...love your dog ..

Whiff Tue 04-May-21 09:09:44

Coco lovely dog. Glad you have stayed at your target. Glad you had a fresh start to. When I said to some people about getting my identity back they looked a me if I was from another planet. We get so wrapped up in our roles in life we lose ourselves well I did.

Beechnut sorry didn't thank you for your birthday wishes. Hope you are keeping well.

Didn't varnish my bench to cold and rainy. We even had sleet. Another cold wet day.

Hope everyone stays nice and cosy.

CocoPops Tue 04-May-21 06:39:01

Hi Pears
Dorset Yes, that's right I am in Canada, West Coast.
Shirley Your dog is a beautiful girl. Here's a photo of my little beast taken after a visit to the groomer, She doesn't usually look so smart!
Whif I understand what you mean about a fresh start. I felt the same as you when I emigrated.
Managed to keep to my target weight with a bit of a struggle.

Whiff Mon 03-May-21 07:55:33

Shirley I felt that way when I only went up by half a pound after Fridays dinner and cake.

Yesterday put the plants I had for my birthday in the garden and planted all my seeds which are in my green house . Saved the runner and French beans for my grandson as they are big enough for him to handle. Today as it's going to rain going to put another coat of varnish on the underside and back of my bench which is in the garage. The bits I missed painting the fence will have to wait for a dry day. And then just house work.

Enjoy throwing things into the skips at the tip.

Hope everyone has a good day. ?

Shirleyw Mon 03-May-21 04:01:04

Up by three quarters of a lb.....I’ve got away lightly this week, what a relief....

It appears to be a typical bank holiday today weather wise.....trip to the ‘tidy tip’ is our outing today ?. What’s your plans.

Beechnut Sun 02-May-21 17:17:37

Happy belated Birthday Whiff. Looks like you enjoyed your day ?

Whiff Sun 02-May-21 15:31:26

Four sorry to here about your dog. I remember an episode of the Yorkshire Vet when a woman's 2 dogs
are a bag of raisins . He gave them something to make them sick then an antibiotic to make sure they didn't get an infection.

Staying the same is an achievement especially when you are under stress.

fourormore Sun 02-May-21 11:33:12

Happy belated birthday Whiff it was great to hear what a lovely day you had. I have only been 'in and out' of GN etc. this week as we have had yet another traumatic experience.

I won't repeat it all here but I will be putting a warning on GN later about dried fruit being extremely poisonous to dogs! If any of you have dogs please read it - it will be on the Pets forum.

The scales this morning were exactly the same as last Sunday - I am a bit disappointed but it is not a gain, so I am on the right road!

Keep up the good work everyone - we will get there slowly but surely! flowersflowersflowers

Brilliant weight losses Sarah and Dorset. Your walk sounds lovely. Glad you could walk in peace. Glad you had your second jab Dorset. Get mine the end of the month.

Had a wonderful birthday thank you all for your best wishes. What started off as a normal day became rather hectic. My home improvements guy brought the estimate for my new bedroom windows which was fine and gave him the go ahead. Then a friend popped round with a card and a little natter. Then my pavers came as the parts arrived for my greenhouse door. I realised they had put the clips holding the panels in were put in upside down and wasn't holding the panels in. Clips put in correctly. Turned out there wasn't a part missing. The top bar had been put on upside down. So now all fixed.

My daughter and grandson's where coming at 1.30 but was running late so asked to be picked up quarter hour later. We went to the park as it had dried up. Had a lovely time but it was cold glad I put my thick coat on.

It was funny as soon as I got into the car my grandson told me they had made me a cake. No use asking a 3 year old to keep a secret .

Went back to theirs but had to stay out of the living room as my presents where there. Whilst my daughter was making drinks he insisted I went in. So shut my eyes and he led me in. Only opened them when my daughter appeared. They had brought my 6 beautiful green glazed pots 3 different sizes plus other pots and gardening items and a voucher for a garden centre. Then we had hot chocolate and cake. He sang happy birthday and helped me blow out the candle. It was lovely. Then playtime.

Later we all had fish ,chips and bread and butter with more cake. Hence my half a pound weight gain. But I enjoyed every mouthful.

My son in law had Friday off and was decorating both they boys bedrooms. My grandson was excited he would be camping in his parents bedroom with his brother. At least this time when I fed the baby didn't end up with the bottle in his ear. He's 5 months old now. After his brother was in his PJ's later on I read him 3 books. He loves to be read to and glad to say he likes nannie reading to him. Have lot of children's books at home which he loves.

Got home after 7.30. Got into my PJs and watching the TV and feel asleep when I woke up it was 12.50am then went to bed . Slept until nearly 8. Usually I am awake between 5-6 every morning. Friends and family know me so well my presents were cross stitch kits, gardening books , money for plants and gardening things.

The day was so wonderful it erased the fact it had been a year since I last saw my son. I know I can face the 4th without being upset. Thanks to friends here and estrangement thread and of course my daughter and family and everyone else who cares about me.

Yesterday I put down a weed control membrane on the floor in the greenhouse. Put the staging up . And some plants which came yesterday. Will plant them out today and start my seeds off.

Dorset you are right about weight loss it's a lot to do with being in the right frame of mind. And also wanting to do it for yourself unless you really want to do it you fail everytime. I did. When my husband was alive my weight was never an issue he loved me wobbly bits and all. Then after he's death had people dependant on me and lost me for years. Only after mom died and I got jaundice had time to think what did I want. Finally it was me time. Sounds selfish putting it like that but I was so wrapped up looking after others whilst ill myself I always put their needs first.

Moving gave me back my identity. I am me . People here know me not wife then widow or someone's mom or daughter but me. It's so freeing and feel happy. The only fly in the ointment is my son . But that's his choice. One he will live to regret especially as my 3 grandson's get older. But I have come to terms with that and am at peace.

Just need these UTIs and kidney infections sorted . But I am patient and in the meantime just take the antibiotics when I get another one.

Hope you all have the sunshine have a great week . ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 02-May-21 08:21:57

That sounds like a lovely day Sarahmob, and well done on the loss?. For me apart from health the biggest incentive is feeling good in clothes and choosing them because I like them not for what they cover up!
Whiffs fish and chips sound lovely. One thing I would really like is scampi ,chips, peas and tartar sauce from my favourite pub,its a chain pub but they do it so perfectly! Sadly they have no outdoor dining area. I'm looking forward to a warm summer's day and a portion of chips by the quay-even if I do have to battle the seagulls?. I had my second jab on Thursday and so looking forward in the summer to some simple pleasures!
I am delighted to report that I have lost 2lb this week! I am now just a quarter of a pound off losing a stone since 22/2/21 which will also be my lockdown weight gain. Still about 4 stone to go so ?.
I must admit I'm quite surprised and bemused by how well its going!
Certainly since February there have been some ups and downs. I find I am less tempted by sweet treats. My daughters birthday last week resulted in a cake mountain?. I had a very thin slice of chocolate cake but found it "not all that", I did enjoy a scone with jam and clotted cream but only the one. Chocolate is a strange thing. Many years ago I was bemused by colleagues who always craved a bar of something. Later on I developed the habit myself. I think there is a definite habit element to chocolate. I had a small amount at Easter which I enjoyed but even though there is some in the house it just doesnt appeal!
We have often discussed the role of psychology in losing weight. I think last year, along with millions of others I was in the frame of mind of wanting a little bit of something nice, the comforting routines of baking, the processes and the aromas.
I think this year that still lingered with the comfort of buttered toast for breakfast etc.
I have had bread once that I can remember recently and other carbs reduced drastically.
As I say it's odd, maybe I am just in the right place and now I'm seeing results its motivating. Hope you all have a lovely week fellow pears??

Sarahmob Sun 02-May-21 07:23:22

Happy Birthday Whiff, I hope that you had an enjoyable day and savoured every mouthful of the fish and chips. We had some sunshine yesterday so visited a local national trust estate for a long walk. We arrived at our prebooked time of 10:30 to find it really busy, but where we intended to walk was quiet. Most families were headed to Belton’s amazing adventure playground. Must have done some good as I can record 1.25 pounds lost this week. I made my daughter laugh as I told her I’d finally lost my baby weight as I’m the same weight I was when I fell pregnant with her ? (it’s only taken 32 years!). I also bought some new dresses this week which I’m keeping for the summer. My DH was very complimentary when I tried them on. I’ve never done dresses before, preferring baggy tops that covered my midriff rolls but he told me I looked lovely so here goes for a new look.
Whatever you’re doing this weekend I hope you have a lovely time, shame about the weather - typical bank holiday weather I think. Have a lovely week pears.

Shirleyw Sat 01-May-21 01:43:52

Happy birthday whif....ooh lovely fish and chips, I bet they went down well?

NanKate Fri 30-Apr-21 22:22:37

A very happy birthday Whiff. Can I have a few of your chips please ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Fri 30-Apr-21 16:37:32

Happy Birthday Whiff. I hope you had a lovely time and the fish and chips were as delicious as I'm imagining???????xxx

Whiff Fri 30-Apr-21 11:39:45

NanKate thank I will look at those. Finished my antibiotics ,it's a waiting game before I have the next infection hopefully it won't be 10 days after the start of the last one like last time. Otherwise I may only have 3-4 days before it hits again. I know once I speak to the urologist they will do tests but so far waited 2 months . I am on the list but I know it's going to be months before they get to me. If my husband was here we would pay and have a private consultation then go via NHS. But can't afford that route. I know some would say that's queue jumping but I have had UTIs and kidney infections since September. I am fed up of them not only that but it's a constant worry for my daughter. As because of her brother throwing me away she has it all. Thank goodness she has a wonderful husband to lean on. Seeing your daughter cry because you are being put into an ambulance is heartbreaking.

Enough doom and gloom . It's my birthday. My daughter and grandsons are coming for me at 1.30. Was going to a park but it's raining . We are having a fish and chip dinner from the chippie for dinner after the boys are in bed. Yum. Haven't had that for a couple of years . Going to enjoy every greasy mouth full.?

Have a good day everyone. ?

NanKate Fri 30-Apr-21 07:31:57

Hi Folks, been off the grid a bit recently so am just catching up. Hope you are all making progress and as ever supporting each other. ?

You sound as if you have had a bad time of it Whiff. Do hope you are now feeling better.

With regard to your antibiotics I have recently been put on a probiotic Bio-Kult for 2 months by my consultant after my recent bout of diverticulitis. He said that they are also worth having after a course of antibiotics too. You may want to investigate. They are cheaper on Amazon and Dolphin Fitness.

Whiff Wed 28-Apr-21 06:16:18

Shirley beautiful dog. No wonder you are getting a work out she looks very strong. Training classes sound fun. Who are they really for the dog or owner ! Sometimes think dogs are secretly laughing at people and saying how well they have trained their owners. Aggie my brother and sister in law's dog seems to know when my sister in law is feeling ill. Her behaviour changes she stays by her side and when she is having a lie down Aggie stays by her side .

My friend had 5 cats. She is difinitly at there beck and call. My daughter likens going shopping with me and grandson's as herding cats. Meaning me and the 3 year old. No idea what she means ?.

Green house base was altered yesterday and edging stones in the back put in and raised beds mortared back together. Hopefully the parts for the door arrive today and then it can be fixed. And then I can use it.

Had my bedroom windows measured yesterday for there replacement's.

Must text the electrician today for a date. The end of the work on the bungalow is coming to an end.

I had a nest of tables from MFI we brought them in 1981 the year we married. They were in a maghony colour. Looked out of place with my colours so my daughter advertised them for free. A lady came for the yesterday she was very pleased with them. And is going to up cycle them. Said she will send a picture when done.

Feeling a lot better. Finish the antibiotics tomorrow hopefully get at least a fortnight before the next one hits. Speaking to my GP on 14th. Hopefully next time don't end up in A&E.

Have a good day everyone.
