On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Cocopops well done with the weight loss. Wow what heat I boil when it gets to 24°c here. Your poor dog. Bet she enjoys her paddle in the bath .

Sparkling it's a blip. You will get into the swing of it. Just keep plugging away. Do you have any hobbies or is there something you have always wanted to have a go at? I read but my obsession is cross stitch only took it up 5 years ago. It's a slow craft and you can't eat while doing it. Also you can do it while watching the TV.

I had to cut foods out that I have no control over . So I don't buy chocolate, ice cream, bread or bread products and posh cheese . I have no stop when it comes to them. I do have them as a treat if I go out for meal but it's only one portion. So it's safe to eat them.

My own father in law said to me a year after we married your to fat if I pay you will you lose weight. I walked out of their house and went to my parents they lived a few streets away. I had been with my husband since 1975 and married in 1981. Don't know if they thought we would spilt up. They brought me a dress 2 sizes to small another time. I just said no thank you.

One time I was out shopping with my husband he had popped into a shop I was outside with the pram and a man shouted at me what does your husband do slap your belly and ride the waves.

Have lots more examples. People think it is acceptable to shout abuse at a fat person . I was a fat child and got bullied for it. Any other form of discrimination there would be marches and court cases.

There are always ignorant people Whiff, sad but true. Like you I have a week spot for the worst foods. I guess we have to look at why we do it. Food to me is a comfort thing, if I’m happy I am fine, a problem pops up, I eat. Yesterday got rid of all the things I shouldn’t eat, last night regretted it but there was nothing in so had to manage. Got to be disciplined when I shop, whatever I buy in case someone pops in I devour, so will stop that, will have one day a week when I have a couple of treats, see how I go. Thanks everyone for your posts.

Losing weight to me is a big mind game.

I no longer use the word ‘diet’ as to me that represents a fixed amount of time until it finishes. I prefer ‘Eating less for life’ with occasional blips as I’m only human. ?

Onward and downward girls. ?

Sarahmob Wed 07-Jul-21 20:56:51

Love the idea of ‘Eating less for life’ NanKate because that builds in the treats and blips. Just back from our few days away, the hotel was lovely and I did indulge a bit. We were on a three course inclusive package, but I couldn’t manage three courses any more (the old me would have resolutely eaten everything and then regretted it) so had main and pudding, but was so happy to resume normal service at dinner this evening with a lovely salad and bowl of strawberries. Hope you are all having a good week ladies.

JoMarch1962 Thu 08-Jul-21 00:05:01

Totally feel the same, Whiff. “Who ate all the pies?” “You’d look lovely if you lost xyz” “You’ve got lovely...eyes” “You look ....well” Ok, the last three were kindly meant, but still, I can translate Patronising. Why do people think personal comments are acceptable? Never are. Funnily enough, they don’t do it now.
Have had good week and half, and am back to pre naming ceremony weight, so am maintaining. Yay! We go north for niece’s wedding tomorrow, then on Sunday am continuing on to Scotland with friend from Uni days to meet other friends from that giddy time, so food and drink will be consumed. But, and it’s a big but, ( as mine will always be, the biggest part of me...) I will be back, being good, back under control next Friday, after my week of celebration and road trip to Nostalgia City. Have a great week,Pears.

Whiff Thu 08-Jul-21 09:15:57

NanKate I like that Eating less for life. Think more people would like that than saying diet. Also it's become a way of life for me. Have blips but I'm human. Couldn't eat a 3 course meal . When I went out for lunch with my brother and sister in law I couldn't eat all my lunch. Fish, chips and mushy peas. Left lot of batter and some chips. The old me would have eat the lot even if I was full.

Sarah glad you had a nice time. I would always go for a main and pudding to. To be honest don't know anyone who would have a starter over pud.

JoMarch well done maintaining. Hope you have a lovely time at the wedding and in Scotland. It will be lovely to see relatives and friends. Lots to catch up with.

Got my heart tape put on yesterday so far my heart hasn't done it's weird beats. Hope it did while I was asleep. Have been doing my exercises everyday since I started my class last week. Couldn't go yesterday as appointment was at the same time. Just having a cuppa then exercise will do extra today to see if my heart does it.

Have a good week everyone

NanKate Thu 08-Jul-21 19:13:08

Whiff I bet you like me as a child were encouraged to finish the food on your plate. However now I don’t feel ashamed of leaving food. Yet again it’s a mind game.

NanKate Thu 08-Jul-21 19:14:12

We could have ‘Eating Less for Life* as our mantra for 2021.

Whiff Thu 08-Jul-21 21:53:38

NanKate I was brought up on wholesome cheap cuts of meat with plenty of fruit and veg. Because my dad was malnourished as a child and army food he had an ulcer at 28 . So we where encouraged to eat all our food.

The worst lie my parents told me was it's puppy fat and will disappear when you are older. Because that's what they believed even though both my parents were over weight. Feeding your child equalled love. That's how my mom was brought up. I think it all stems from food rationing during and after the war.

But at least I have done something about being fat. Better late than never. I never want to go back to being size 32 ever again. Happy being a 16 when I finally reach 11st may be a 14 but I am happy at 16.

Shirleyw Sat 10-Jul-21 05:28:37

‘Eating less for life’ would be perfect for our mantra nankate . No truer a sentence.

Well, back from holiday, you’d think I had worms by the amount I ate and drank, like I went wild ???.
Sunday will be my weigh in day now so shall make the most of today then ’back to the drawing board’. Won’t be surprised if this past fortnight I put on about 8lb…I can feel it…..

Dorsetcupcake61 Sat 10-Jul-21 10:05:59

Good morning lovely ladies?. I always check Pears daily-even if I dont have time to write I find it inspiring and comforting when I see myself in others.
I am quite surprised to have lost 2 1/4 pounds!
I had a lovely visit from my eldest daughter and family. Due to the rain we had an indoor picnic lunch. It was lovely with salad and mini samosas ,quorn scotch eggs. I also made some brownies ! I did have a brownie but otherwise stuck to a moderate meal, avoiding the bread.
Monday I had fish and chips as my best friend and her husband visited-they live in Stoke and although we are constantly in touch I havent seen her in person since the end of 2019. A lovely day♥️.
I must admit I'm very wary of fact that although I passed a stone mark due to a bit of yo yo ing I am still only 3lb under-I need to be focused !
It's so inspiring to share our whoops moments and successes. All I can echo is that it is a slow procesd-like whiff and JoMarch have said. About a decade ago I was nearly 5 stone heavier.im only 5 foot 2 so I was shocked into action! The weight has come off in blocks with periods of dieting and non dieting-probably the most difficult being last year.
Fortunately I've never put it all back on and then some ,which is very common!
I think it is definitely about forming new life style habits. I think for me a big influence was weight watchers. Through them I learnt to cook healthier alternatives and over the years my tastes have changed-for me it's the norm to make oven baked potato wedges with spray oil, I find anything other than a hint of oil in a recipe off putting!
Calorie counting is something I would recommend to anyone due to how it shows you what a normal portion is and I have found that for the majority of the time my appetite has decreased accordingly.
Weightloss has certainly been consistent. What I have found very interesting is the concept of snacking . I've found most diet clubs in retrospect highlight this whether as treats or syns.etc. At the beginning of the year I included a snack mid morning and mid afternoon out of habit. Increasingly I've found I dont want it! I may have something small when I come in from work but tend to use the calories for something nice like a slice of garlic bread with my meal. When I think about it in the past I have associated snacks with treats and I think often the emphasis at diet clubs is how to avoid the high calorie " danger " foods I.e have sugar free jelly instead of a biscuit. That can work but also worth bearing in mind maybe it's better to question whether you want anything at all! I'm sure I'm not alone in having days when all I wanted was a donut but spent time having alternatives-only to have the donut eventually! Cynically many of the treats marketed by diet clubs are very processed and I found leave you wanting more!
I'm by no means perfect but I've found the higher protein lower carb yoghurts such as skyr a real boost.
In some ways I have been lucky with unkind comments. As a child I was overweight and teased which will of course had an effect. As an adult not so much. I can only think of two occasions one by a young niece who said that although I was very fat I was lovely! I remember someone telling fatty from a car window once as well. I think it's always affected my self confidence in a variety of ways. I know from academic studies often an employer will choose the slimmer candidate out of 2 with exactly the same credentials. Those that are overweight are viewed as being lazy or out of control. Well they were-im not sure if that is still the case with an epidemic of obesity across all age groups-being very slim may soon make you the minority! In fact when I think about my day in the office yesterday I would say those that were traditionally viewed as the norm-size 12 and under are few and far between. !
I hope everyone has had a happy and peaceful week?

fourormore Sun 11-Jul-21 09:11:51

After a busy and somewhat anxious week (yet again!!! It's the norm for us these days) I weighed this morning and have put on 0.4lb which means that, to all intents and purposes I have stayed the same.
For various reasons we've not done a decent walk at all this week and my indoor regime 'doing the stairs' etc. isn't the same. I don't mind a disappointing result if I know why!!!
I had a good loss of nearly 2lb last week so it's balancing out.
Keep going everyone - loads of lovely fellow-strugglers all giving positive vibes!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 11-Jul-21 09:35:22

I hope you have a more relaxed week this week Fourormore ?. A tiny gain for you-and as you say it does balance out?.
My eldest daughter sent a photo from a car boot sale she is at today. As a result lots of sharing of happy memories from their childhoods. We had to use my dads car but many a time selling unwanted items saved my bacon! The girls used to love hunting for treasures with a small amount of money!
I havent been to one for a very long time. I wonder if they are as popular? Our high streets now have many more charity shops. Also discount shops such as Poundland and Primark may have had an affect?
In retrospect I think it taught the girls how not to waste money. I think certainly my eldest daughter was influenced as she regularly buys good quality toys from second hand sites and then when outgrown donates/sells. With the current concerns with having a throw away society maybe they are still thriving? Anyone else a fan?

Whiff Sun 11-Jul-21 10:37:12

Shirley glad you had a good holiday.

Dorset well done with the weight loss. I have never been to a car boot sale. But my dad used to go and sell any good quality things they had plus and surplus plants he had grown. He was an expert gardener. I have always love an outdoor market and when my husband was alive farmers markets.
Glad you had a great time with your family.

Four my brother would say that's the weight of a big wee. ( Well he wouldn't say wee I am being polite. ) ?.

My weight has stayed the same. Seems I can maintain a weight just need to put more effort in losing. Must be extra careful and may reduce my calories as 19th going to stay with my brother and sister in law for 3 nights. Managed to get bargain train ticket £20.50 return. Proper price over £43 .

Had my heart tape fitted Wednesday and had to take it off myself at home and them return it. Unfortunately my heart didn't do it's weird beats when I was wake hopefully did it while asleep. I must be allergic to the adhesive as I had a rash in the 3 places the electrodes where. Luckily the 500 Dermol lotion I use is working and should be all gone in a couple of days.

Had a lovely afternoon yesterday with my daughter and grandsons. Both are poorly with a cold and my daughter has pulled her shoulder. Spent some time in the garden. Monty Don said to cut away extra leaves from veg plants. My daughter says I went a bit to far with my tomato plants . But haven't grown them before. My husband was the gardener. So might not get any fruit. I will know for next year. But have some french beans and courgettes growing. Got some strawberries and one is being to ripen.

Have a great week everyone ❤️

Whiff Sun 11-Jul-21 11:59:53

This is my first courgette the flower had died so thought I had better pick it. I know it's little but I managed to grow it. My husband said I had a black thumb if he was hear I would make him eat his words ?.

CocoPops Mon 12-Jul-21 06:18:55

Great weight loss Dorset.
I had 2 grandchildren here on Friday, the first time actually inside my apartment for over a year because of the pandemic. Lots of fun. They love baking but it's too hot to have the oven on so we made some healthy salads instead. Later we built towers with marshmallows and spaghetti. Of course I couldn't resist stuffing my face with marshmallows and I put on the lb. I lost last week. Must try harder!
Have a good week everyone.

Sparkling Mon 12-Jul-21 06:20:44

Whiff, well done on growing your courgette. Now you have to eat it and tell us how it tasted.
It will be two weeks since I started my new eating plan, kept to it but not on one day over the weekend. I worked out I was 3500 calories down a week, but not lost an ounce, feel thinner inside? it could be hunger though.. I know what I did before was unhealthy, the daily treats of biscuits and chocolate, I want to lose 20 pounds, but at this rate it’s going to be a long job.

Whiff Mon 12-Jul-21 07:21:08

Cocopops glad you had a great time with your grandchildren. You may of put weight on. But your heart was light with all the love and joy you had with them.

Sparkling have you measured yourself. Over the years I found sometimes I didn't lose any weight for weeks but lost inches. When I started my to pinch NanKate's words 'Eating less for life' I realised after decades it's a marathon not a sprint. If I lost a quarter pound a week I was happy. If I stayed the same again it was a win.

I would give up if I had a bad day. Haven't done that since I decided to loss the weight. Even if I have a bad day because I have become obsessed with weighting and measuring everything and counting the calories I count my over eating. At least I know how much I went over.

When I started I used to have 1400 cals a day and then as the weight came off dropped it . I now try and stick to 1200 a day. My start weight was over 19st. But I didn't do any exercise apart from going out shopping. Didn't start exercising until I got down to 15.5 st. I hadn't got the confidence to go too a class before then. I got it into my mind I would be the largest there. I was surprised I wasn't.

Someone said losing weight is a mind came. Wish I had realised that decades ago. But it's right. What got me into the right frame of mine was having jaundice don't recommend having that. But because of was so ill for 5 months and couldn't do anything for a long time but think.

You are in the right frame of mind you have set yourself a target you want to lose 20lbs. Don't set yourself a time limit. I found if I did that it puts pressure on yourself. Take it one day at a time. You will succeed . Just keep at it. Do you write everything down you eat? As I said I count calories it's the only way I can do it. Whatever way you are doing it remember to be kind to yourself. Hope you have a better week.

Sarahmob Mon 12-Jul-21 12:32:32

Good afternoon Pears, a day later than usual this week as I had my DD and the grandsons staying for the weekend and no time to spend on the iPad yesterday lol. I’m pleased to report a pound off in spite of ice cream at the activity park we visited on Saturday - must have been the exercise on the sky net which was amazing fun, but boy do my arms and glutes ache today ?

Allsorts Tue 13-Jul-21 06:53:35

Can I join for support please, I never stick to a diet, so just changing to healthy options. I need to lose a stone and more importantly, not put another ounce on. I am a comfort eater, I get worried or upset so I eat. If I just lose half amount a week it will take seven months, so not looking that far ahead,, it’s too daunting.

Allsorts Tue 13-Jul-21 06:54:11

Should have been half a pound a week.

Whiff Tue 13-Jul-21 09:23:12

Allsorts I learnt the hard way and wasted decades being fat. NanKate calls it Eating less for life rather than dieting which is a great way to think about it. Also it's a marathon not a sprint. If I lost quarter of a pound a week I was happy . At the moment I am staying the same but still want to lose the last stone and bit. The old me if I had a bad day gave up. But have been at it for 4 years now. I never want to be a 32 ever again. I like being a 16 may get into 14 when I lose the last bit.

Food was my comfort. Ate if I was happy or sad. I count calories. Others have other ways. It's important you find what suits you. I had to cut out the foods I have no control over. Don't buy them anymore. But have them when I go out for a meal as it's only one portion. Not eating a whole tub of ice cream in a day.

Everyone here is wonderful , supportive and never judges.

Sarah well done with the weight loss. Lovely photo. You have more energy than me. I would fall over on the netting plus my stick would go down the holes. Bet you sleep well that night.

Have a good day everyone ?

Sarahmob Tue 13-Jul-21 10:42:34

Welcome Allsorts, this thread guarantees a supportive group ? We celebrate losses (however small) and encourage perseverance when the scales stubbornly refuse to shift or go in the wrong direction.
