On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Morning all. So ive just weighed myself and I have put on llb!!!! I think it was the kebab last night as ive been good all week. But I shall carry on and hopefully it will be better next week as Im not giving up!. Good luck to you all. Rosy x.

Whiff Sun 29-Aug-21 08:43:37

It's a blip Rosy. We all have them. Keep going you will get there.

Put on 3/4 lb this week. Stuck to my calorie allowance but have been retaining water. But lunch time my lower legs and ankles are swollen . Not getting rid of the water. My heart has been doing weird things for a few weeks.

6 am yesterday my heart beat was out of control. Phoned for an ambulance but as usual was busy but called my daughter she took me to hospital and cancelled ambulance. I was quickly seen but it was only 7am. After 2 ECGs nurse said I had AF. Quickly put in a room for A&E patients who need watching. Put on a heart monitor and had bloods done. Had a nice breakfast and cup of tea. Why do hospitals always make good tea? Anyway got a lot of reading done. The Dr talked to me then looked up my echo scans. He confirmed I have AF and my first 2 ECGs showed my heart rate was 198. But the last one showed it had gone done. He prescribed beta blockers and blood thinners and has referred me to the AF clinic where they will do lot of tests and prescribe more medication. But need to speak to my GP this week. Got my tablets from the hospital pharmacy and my daughter came for me about 12.30. Just rested yesterday but hopefully doing some light weeding when it's warmer today.

Knew my heart was getting worse it's lovely to have a name to it. My brother has AF as well. I look and feel fine. But I will not stop doing what I want. Just have to be careful with knives and knocking myself. Going to my exercise class on Wednesday as usual. Wobble cushion and cones this week.

Baby sat as usual on Friday. Had a lovely time with them. Got Friday off this week as my son in law got the week off but will still see them on one of the days.

My brother and sister in law plus her dad are selling their houses and moving to Lincolnshire. My brother and sister in law's house went on the market on Thursday they accepted an offer after 4 hours. They have found a bungalow they like. Don't know if he dad's house has an offer but will speak to my brother later. The are back from Lincolnshire today.

Did the back garden this week it's looking good. Next year know where I went wrong with growing my veg. But still getting some to eat. My first time so I am pleased.

Supposed to nice weather all week. Have a good one. ??

Rosycheeks Sun 29-Aug-21 09:49:01

Good morning lovely pears?. Welcome newbies and congratulations to those who have lost and maintained and big hugs to those that have put on. It's such a rollercoaster process! I always find it hard when I have been following a plan carefully and either stayed the same or barely lost anything. I think that's when it's important to look at other areas. For me it's my work trousers! How snug/ loose they feel is a good indicator alongside the scales. !
I think maintaining is so important as once you reach goal that is more important than the weight loss itself. Welcome Silverlinings and well done for maintaining so long. Also well done for nipping any gain in the bud. Some of the best advice I heard was someone who after many struggles up and down did reach goal. After that she never went more than 7lb over-much less painful to lose than stones! Also recognising whether you are really hungry or tired. I can frequently stick to a healthy eating during the day only to have the munchies in the evening. Recognising I am tired and going to bed has saved me thousands of calories?.
I also think the notion of what our goal is also has to be flexible. I think in the past I have longed for the weight I was at in my 20s. I would say maybe 7lb higher is more realistic. I think my definite goal is a healthy BMI range. Once within that I think it's important to look at how you feel physically. If your physical wellbeing is better and you feel confident in how you look may be at a stage when maintaining should be the focus.
If you are not quite there yet I think it can help to have a change of what you eat- it can inspire and give that final push.
I'm sorry to heat to have been in hospital Whiff-but it's good that they know what's causing the problems. Sending hugs?.
Well this week I have lost 1.5 lbs. It really was quite unexpected. I have had the odd treat and not calorie counted to extent I have written things down! My activity levels havent changed in the past few months either!
All I can put it down to is work.! At the beginning of the year when WFH the days calories were meticulously planned to the maximum allowed. Now i probably just eat less. I take my lunch hour but have something healthy. I will take in two snacks of about 150 calories each for energy. For me personally it helps I am so busy I dont have time to think about food. I think previously I would plan and have a snack because it was "allowed". Now it's because my tummy rumbles!
We have often said how the psychology of weightloss is important. I certainly feel I'm more eating to live than living to eat! I certainly need to focus and channel this though as have several stone to lose!
Good luck all?

Rosycheeks Sun 29-Aug-21 10:12:04

I remember going to ww class when I was 60 im 66 now, I had put on a pound and the leader said perhaps its the time of the month I had to laugh and told her my age and she said she was really surprised I was 60 so putting on that one pound wasnt so bad smile

fourormore Sun 29-Aug-21 10:42:05

Well done everyone for losing, maintaining or for not giving up when gains occur. That is the key - have a bad day or week but put it behind us and start afresh!
The 1.4 I put on last week (that was SIL's fault!!! hmm) has gone so I am pleased with that - today is Sinday so I have treats to look forward to - then all systems go throughout the week!
Goodness Whiff you are having a time of it, but I'm glad they are sorting things. GP happy with my progress although the old BP fluctuates between 109 and 151 over all sorts so that's being monitored. You take care Whiff
Keep going everyone - don't give up and stick with us newbies as you'll get nothing but encouragement and support on this thread! flowersflowersflowers

Sarahmob Sun 29-Aug-21 14:00:55

I’ve had a small gain (1lb) this week, although I thinks it’s down to the afternoon tea I prepared for my parents yesterday. It was part of my mums eightieth birthday celebrations. I can refuse shop bought cake with no difficulty, but my own cake (apart from the banana cake I make for DH which I’m not keen on) is much harder to say no to. So chocolate dipped shortbread, lemon drizzle and scones were consumed! However, onwards and downwards I’ll soon have that pound off!
Whiff where in Lincolnshire is your brother buying? That’s where I live so I’m curious. I do hope you’re looking after yourself and that your AF is brought under control. ?
Well done to all the losers and maintainers this week, and thank you all for your continued support and encouragement.

fourormore Sun 29-Aug-21 15:10:25

An 80th birthday is more than enough of a good reason for a little 'sinlet' Sarahmob My gain last week was my SIL's fault as she wanted fish and chips - but I lost it over this past week so it all comes and goes when it's minimal amounts.
Congratulations to your Mum!!! flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Sun 29-Aug-21 17:59:59

Dorset and Four well done with your loses.

Sarah it's a blip. They have seen a 5 bed bungalow in Billinghay they are hoping to get.

Had a call from AZ clinic today got an appointment at 9am on Thursday. I can't get over how quickly I got an appointment.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I look after myself and don't worry about things . As worrying doesn't make it any better.

Feeling ok just happy they know what it is. And on the right tablets to help with it.

Shirleyw Mon 30-Aug-21 06:01:20

That’s good you got an appt so quick whif….hope you feel ok now.
Chickened out of going on the scales this week, had a hectic 7 days, helped daughter move, forgotten how much stuff there was when moving. I had more stamina than I thought how we can keep going is amazing, I flagged a bit towards the end when I was carrying a fairly light box and my legs just wouldn’t go up a step anymore that’s when I called it a day for myself…my appetite though when finished was ravenous , when I got home I couldn’t stop eating and then all the family down this weekend…I always go overboard with the cooking and always have too much in , they all go back later so I hope to get back to my sensible eating.
Getting autumnal early mornings and evenings now don’t you think.? ….have a good week all

CocoPops Tue 31-Aug-21 05:42:45

Good to know you've started medication to contol your AF Whiff.
Totally agree with the need to recognise tiredness Dorset.
Sarahmob Your Mum is so lucky to have such a thoughtful daughter.
Rosycheeks Hope your decorating is going well.
I'm guilty of comfort eating recently and put on 3lbs. Hope my will-power returns soon!

Whiff Tue 31-Aug-21 09:32:59

Shirley moving stuff is never ending. Remember all the packing before my move 2 years ago. Thought I had been very good getting rid of stuff no idea why I brought something's with me. Had to get rid of them once unpacked. Glad to say all the things I wanted done here are. Only need redecorating in 5+ years. Everything else will never need doing again. Garden an on going joy.

Shifting all those boxes etc has probably built your muscles up and don't forget muscle weighs more than fat.

Cocopops Mr Powers will be back with you soon.

Didn't take my beta blocker today as my heart beat has been below 60 the last 3 days and my lower legs are swollen and tight. The Dr at the hospital told me if my heart rate drops to stop the tablet. Talking to my GP this afternoon but doubt he will do anything as I am at the AF clinic Thursday morning. But feeling ok. Think I need a water tablet as taking plenty of fluid in just not coming out. And have stuck rigidly to my calorie count the last 2 weeks. Having AF has spurred me on to stick to it.

Have a good day everyone

Whiff Wed 01-Sept-21 08:39:01

Spoke to my GP yesterday afternoon he wants to see me this morning. Not happy with my heart blood results. Says I need to see cardio as well as AF clinic. Not happy I am still waiting for urology. It's been since March.

But whatever he wants me to have done I will. Hopefully he will give me some water tablets as I am sticking like glue to my calories but my scales along with my lower legs and ankles are up again.. My legs are normal when I wake but within a max couple of hours they are up. Sitting with them raised again .

I hate worrying my daughter and brother and sister in law. I don't think I am going to drop dead any minute I just want whatever is wrong put right.

I know you don't mind me having a moan. But just lately it's one thing after another. Also don't think my kidneys are working probably. Haven't got UTI or kidney infection but not weeing as much as usual.

Reading British heart Foundation site heart failure which I have can effect your kidneys. As the blood isn't being pumped efficiently to them.

At least the health service up here is excellent. My brother should have an ECG every 6 months hasn't had one for 2 years. He has AF and stents in his heart.

Putting this down here means I don't worry about it. It's like talking to a group of friends.

Thank for listening.

Shirleyw Wed 01-Sept-21 13:19:22

aah bless you Whif, what a time your having. The health service where you are does seem very good....got to say i have no complaints about the L & D hospital where I am, saved my husbands life last year. Its good you can say it all on here, writing/typing down does help, sort of therapy....
take care whif...

fourormore Wed 01-Sept-21 14:25:09

We are all supporting you Whiff - like you say - do whatever your GP says as it seems they are getting things moving for you.
Sadly people are having to wait longer for 'routine' or 'regular follow up' appointments because of the covid backlog. We have a huge spike of cases around us - the virus has definitely not gone away.
Our poor NHS will be struggling for a long while yet and luckily our GPs are doing whatever they can under the circumstances.
Our surgery last week reported many 'Did not attend' appointments - appalling.
You stay positive and you will be sorted! flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Wed 01-Sept-21 15:53:28

GP sent me via ambulance to hospital. I have chest pain. Been here since 11.30. Seen Dr had blood tests xray and ECG just a waiting game. I am putting my daughter through extra tress. If they just found out what my heart defect was and fixed it would make life easier for her. But Covid put pay to them investigating further. See what happens at AF clinic tomorrow. Sorry just having a moan.n

Rosycheeks Wed 01-Sept-21 16:26:12

Oh poor you Whiff I hope they find what the problem is and sort it out quickly for you. flowers

Whiff Wed 01-Sept-21 17:58:32

On side ward may have to stay in. Test results not back yet. But I feel ok. ?

Whiff Wed 01-Sept-21 19:59:50

Glad to say not long got home. All tests negative . Being referred to cardio outpatients. Thank you for your good wishes.????

NanKate Wed 01-Sept-21 20:08:12

Glad all your tests are negative Whiff. What a difficult time you are having. Glad you are back in your own home. Please keep us up to speed with your progress ?

Shirleyw Thu 02-Sept-21 02:35:24

Good to read your tests are back negative whiff, you can relax a bit.

Dorsetcupcake61 Thu 02-Sept-21 06:42:50

Sending massive hugs Whiff. You are in all our thoughts and so glad you can share your concerns here. Take care??xxxx

Whiff Thu 02-Sept-21 14:25:54

Went to the AF clinic this morning. I have Paroxysmal Atrial fibrillation. Can't have beta blockers as the slows my heart down to much. So been put on tablet to get my heart into rthymn. But on blood thinners for life. Got to go back next week for more blood tests and ECG. The new tablet can only be prescribed by the hospital.

The health care here is amazing.

Rosycheeks Thu 02-Sept-21 14:28:35

Well Whiff at least you know what is wrong now. Hope this puts you on the mend. Rosieflowers
