3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Ashamed to say I have gradually put on almost all the weight I lost, so starting again. It began with the odd celebration meal out for birthdays etc. their seemed to be all together and all my good worked gone. It takes ages to lose but goes on immediately, it’s as if it’s lurking there all the time waiting fir me to trip up.

Whiff Sun 15-May-22 09:02:19

Allsorts the main thing is you aren't giving up. If losing weight was easy we would all be size 12 . But it's not it's hard work . When you look around in the shops there is so much choice. What is shocking is so called healthy snacks are very high in calories . Healthy should mean low cal.

Today is a new day and a new start. So be kind to yourself . Might help if you planned your meals out for the week. Include a treat if you want one. My way of eating isn't for everyone but it works for me and means if I am not well always have my lunch and dinner in the fridge just needs reheating.

Glad to say lost 1.75lbs this week . I put a photo of myself when I was over 19st in my kitchen it's helped me stay on the straight and narrow this week. Have a good week pears.
.

Sensible advice Whiff. Well done for your loss ?

I hope Doodledog tells us about her son’s wedding. The weather was lovely here in the south east yesterday.

fourormore Sun 15-May-22 10:58:25

Well done Whiff Sadly I know where most of your lost weight went! I have put on 1.4 this week but know why which is the important thing.

Had a very stressful week and succumbed to a bacon sarnie and also hit the biscuits several times blush

Just as Whiff says Allsorts - on this thread we pick ourselves up and start over again. No one on here will condemn you as we have all been there and in all probability will be there again!

Take each day as it comes - in normal times I have Sundays as my 'Sinday' - the day when I do allow myself chocolate etc. Weigh first thing then .... yeh!!! That way I have something to look forward to and the week of 'being good' doesn't seem quite so hard?

I fully believe the pandemic has a lot to answer for in that so many people are really frustrated deep down - hence my bad week - I've had to deal with people (and myself!) who, in normal times would be perfectly rational but this week have been totally crazy!!!

Next week is a new week - we're all in the same boat but as I always say - some of us can row faster than others, so keep on going everyone! flowersflowersflowers and I hope the wedding went well Doodlebug extra flowers for you!!!

fourormore Sun 15-May-22 10:59:36

Sorry Doodledog for calling you a bug !!!!!!!!!!!! blush

Sarahmob Sun 15-May-22 14:28:34

Hi everyone,
I was interested to see people using ‘odd box’ - my daughter has a delivery from them every week. They don’t deliver locally to me so I can’t, but we’re surrounded by local producers who sell in farm shops and at the farm gate, so perhaps that’s why.
Another week of maintaining just below my target so I’m well pleased with myself. I was really worried that once I’d lost the weight I wanted to that it would all start to pile back on. (That’s what’s happened before!) however, I seem to have settled into a 80/20 split, where 80% of the time I eat to my ‘diet’ and then 20% I allow myself the treats that keep me in balance.

Hope you all have a good week

Doodledog Sun 15-May-22 17:45:22

Thanks for all the kind posts (and no problem, fourormore grin).

The wedding was lovely. The sun shone (we were in Scotland, so it must have been a UK-wide warm spell), and the bride and groom looked so happy and in love ❤️. Everything ran smoothly, the speeches were heartwarming, and the food was delicious. I've just got back, and there is another party next week. The wedding was for close family and friends, and the party is for the wider crowd.

I haven't seen the photos yet, and much as I'd like to post one on this thread, I can't, as it's a public forum, but I hope I didn't let the side down. I thought the dress was quite forgiving, and it did hang very well. All eyes were on the beautiful bride, though, which was as it should be.

Doodledog Sun 15-May-22 23:58:01

Sorry, Sarahmob I didn’t respond to your post.

I don’t think that odd box delivers here. We do get through a lot of vegetables, but I prefer to buy them to suit the recipe rather than find recipes to suit the veg we have, if that makes sense. That’s why I’ve never bought into veg box schemes. I sometimes like the idea though.

Shirleyw Mon 16-May-22 05:02:57

Glad the wedding went well doodledog and that also the weather was good.

Beautiful weather here to Saturday in beds. , we went to a bbq hence my weigh in today is +2lb .

Going to start power walking today, see if I can keep that up!

Have a good week all.

Whiff Mon 16-May-22 06:17:35

Stress will do it everytime Four. If you are anything like me food was my go to when I was stressed or unhappy but then again I eat when I was happy so not a good example ?. Stress and not knowing was why I eat the 2 packets of biscuits while waiting to see if my son would send the letter back unopened. Can't say I won't stress eat again but if I do so be it. I won't give up eating less for life.

You have shown you aren't a quitter either and keep at it. Which is the main thing. It's easy to give up but takes strong determination to carry on . Like life no matter what it throws at everyone here we keep going .

Sarah well done maintaining. Hopefully one day I will be after some tips from you. The 80% 20% spilt sounds a workable system. Having the Odd Box I found out I like Khlorabi. Tried a bit raw but didn't taste of much . So tried some boiled and some roasted liked it both ways. My daughter has a box a week but fortnightly is enough for me as it's just me. Looking forward to my next one . It's a bit like Christmas not knowing what you are going to get. The quality is excellent far better than in the shops. And it's fresher.

Doodledog glad you had a wonderful time at your son's and daughter in law's wedding. You could always post a pic of just the dress if you would like us to see it. Glad you looked a knock out as I am sure you did. My eldest niece and her fiance have been looking at forest setting's for their wedding. Things are definitely better nowadays. Our only choice was church or grotty registry office and it was grotty in 1980. We married in church in 1981 even though we are atheists. The vicar knew this and asked if we believed in the marriage vows which we did so he said that was good enough for him. Funny when you are young you met up with all extended family at weddings but when you get older its funerals . That's life for you .

Shirley can't remember the last BBQ I went to. Probably the last time my husband did one. He had this he man I cook with fire love of BBQ's plus being a scout then venture scout leader helped. Glad you enjoyed it in the sunshine.

Well have a good we everyone.

kissngate Mon 16-May-22 09:19:13

Lost 2lb last week another 20 to go. Would be interested in any low cal dessert recipes. My go to is low cal Trifle = one weetabix divided into six very small pots. Pour over a pint or so of Hartleys sugar free jelly. When set top with low fat / fat free yogurt. Sometimes I sprinkle on sf seeds or flaked almonds. It ticks the box when you feel the need for a treat.

SachaMac Mon 16-May-22 19:11:35

The wedding sounds lovely doodledog You’ll be looking forward to the party too.

I’ve stayed the same this week, no real surprise & I did have a good loss last week. I’m feeling positive though, I agree with Whiff on stress, it has a massive impact on your weight, affects appetite, food choices, metabolism etc.

Ive been on two long walks with the dog today (got soaked to the skin on one) & have eaten very healthily. I just have to get through the evening without going crazy with snacks, I couldn’t resist buying three large packs of nuts for £5 at the weekend, cashews, walnuts & a mixed bag, so far they remain unopened. If I could just weigh a few out and stick at that!!
The trifles sound delicious kissngate I do a cheesecake type dessert with Grape Nuts as the base topped with fat free or low fat Greek yoghurt with a little vanilla essence stirred through & fresh or frozen berries. I’m making rhubarb fools with low fat Greek yoghurt at the moment as I have lots growing in the garden. I also love LF or Fat Free yoghurt with a teaspoon of really nice lemon curd stirred through. If I can spare the calories I crumble in a meringue nest, delicious.
Well done to everyone, keep going & have a good week smile

Doodledog Tue 17-May-22 08:40:47

Gosh, it's years since I had Grape Nuts - I'd forgotten they existed grin. I used to love them. Are they low in fat? It's a great idea to use them instead of biscuits for a pudding base. My daughter is very partial to banoffee pie, so I make it when she visits, and eat the rest when she goes home (if there are any leftovers, that is wink ). I realise that whatever you do with a banoffee pie it isn't going to be health food, but 'every little helps', as they say in Tesco.

SachaMac Tue 17-May-22 10:16:26

Yes they’re still available doodledog they’re quite a healthy option, when I did SW they were a Healthy Extra, that’s when I first got into eating them again. I often do them overnight with frozen berries & LF yoghurt for breakfast too. They soak all the fruit juices up and are lovely.

Doodledog Tue 17-May-22 10:43:23

Thanks, I'll look out for them next time I'm doing a grocery shop.

Whiff Thu 19-May-22 05:15:02

kissngate well done with the loss.

Before my exercise class they have started a weight loss group again run by my council. But it's the sort of group that doesn't weight you but advises on how to lose weight and keep it off. As I am always early I was waiting outside the hall and could hear what the leader was saying. Plenty of helpful advise. But couldn't help myself someone was asking about making curry. And he was explaining how to make it without a jar of sauce. Using curry powder and flour and water. So I popped my head around and waited for a pause apologised for butting in but explained you didn't need to use flour as it was adding extra cal's you didn't need to. And explained about using a tin of tomatoes and using evaporation to thicken the curry. Did explained I had lost weight and used to be a cook. I am properly trained but think chef is putting a bob on yourself hence cook and not chef. He asked me if I had another cheats. A couple of women asked me what I ate told them but said my way doesn't suit everyone . After everyone left I talked to him and then I had a hot flush. So said perils of the menopause considering I had a hysterectomy 26 years ago . He said his girlfriend's mom had just had one and asked my advice about what she should be doing. As his girlfriend thinks her mom is doing to much. I really don't know how I get myself in to these situations. Think my brother is right I have diarrhoea of the mouth. ?.

SachaMac Thu 19-May-22 18:22:58

I use passata or tinned tomatoes for the base for a curry sauce too Whiff
Sounds like you were able to offer them some sound advice in more ways than one smile

Sarahmob Sun 22-May-22 08:02:09

Good morning all,
Had a small loss this week, 1/2 pound off so I’m now well under target. I’ve been really busy with running after the grandsons and then was asked to work for the rest of the week so the increased activity levels probably account for the loss. It’s good to have the wriggle room of being under target but I confess I still weigh everyday (I know they tell you not to, but it helps me keep my focus) so I can immediately recognise when the scales are going in the wrong direction.

Hope you all have a good week

Whiff Sun 22-May-22 09:14:47

Sarah brilliant stilling under target weight. I weight myself every day but only count Sundays. So even though yesterday the scales said I had lost a lb today I am the same as last week so that's what I record. As only Sundays weight goes in my book. Running after grandson's will keep you fit. I always fall asleep on the sofa at night after running round after my 2 whirlwinds . Have a good week everyone.

fourormore Sun 22-May-22 09:17:40

Well done Sarahmob - how I wish I could reach anywhere near my target but I know it's way out of reach at the moment. It's one week at a time - I will persevere though.

I know people say you shouldn't weigh every day but on this thread we support all the various ways of keeping focussed. Some don't weigh at all and go by clothes fitting etc. We all have our way of doing things and no one is wrong!!! My Sunday weigh-in and Sinday treats keep me focussed but I know that wouldn't work for others.

Another small gain of a pound this week but again I know why which is the important thing. We are hoping to have a week away in a couple of weeks time so I'm not overly concerned today as I know I will put on a bit then. The salad season is here so that will help - meanwhile today is Sinday. I will still have my Sinday treats as there's no punishment when I know why I have gained.

Good luck as always to everyone - gain, lose or stay the same, we are all here for each other flowersflowersflowers

Sarahmob Sun 22-May-22 19:31:34

Just keep going fourormore, it is hard going at times, I know particularly last summer I stayed the same for months and despaired of losing my final half stone. (It has taken two years to lose the weight I have lost).

cornergran Sun 22-May-22 19:51:25

Hello everyone. A pound down this week.

I’m trying to change my eating patterns and not always have the same meals as Mr C who has less of a weight gain issue. Easier to do in the summer I find. I’m heartened by you all. Thank you again for sharing your experiences.

Doodledog Sun 22-May-22 20:09:39

Yes, in the summer it's easier to swap carbs for salad, isn't it?

Well, we had the second part of my son's wedding celebrations yesterday, so it's all over now. We had a great time, but I no longer have a target in mind (not that it did me much good when I did ?).

So. I'm starting again, and like you, cornergran, I'm hoping that the summer will help. I am a lot more mobile than I was when I started this in January (asthma is better controlled) so I should be able to shed calories by exercise, even if it's fairly limited. I've insisted on an in-person appointment with my endocrinology consultant as I've been treated over the phone for Graves and Hashitoxosis for more than two years now. They have swung back and forth since before Covid, and it's been a nightmare. If we can get on top of that, too, I might get some of my life back, which would be amazing, as I feel as though the last couple of years have been spent in suspended animation.

Although I still need to lose about 3 stone, I feel hopeful, and that it's achievable now that I can get out more.

Shirleyw Mon 23-May-22 06:21:16

That’s great sarahmob, half under target.

Well done * cornergran* pound off is fab.

half a pound off for me, amazed since we are just back from a weekend away by the sea….fish and chips went with that ?.
I’m a daily weigher too…just to keep tabs not to be obsessed with it or get stressed when it’s up, keeps me focussed….

I’m trying to be organised this week with my meals, make ahead lunches for work etc.

Have a good week guys

CocoPops Mon 23-May-22 07:25:49

Oops I've been inconsistent about checking in every week.
Good to know you are all doing well/trying hard.
I am off to the UK tomorrow to visit no. 1 AC for a couple of weeks and will undoubtedly fall off the wagon a bit. Will catch up with ye all on my return. Battle on Dear Pears.
