3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Morning everyone hope you all had a good weekend. Ive lost 1lb this week, it’s slow going but a step in the right direction after last weeks maintain. I’ve had some lovely healthy meals but I’m still struggling to stop my snacking habit in an evening, it’s work in progress. Maybe hypnotism would help!!
Have a good week all.

I noticed that avocados are only 50p in Sainsburys, which brought to mind one of my favourite summer salads.

For 2 people - Chop avocado and put in a bowl with the juice of a lemon to stop it going brown. Chop spring onions and cucumber (proportions to taste, but I work on about half a cucumber and 4 spring onions per avocado) and a red pepper (fresh or roasted from a jar). Add in chopped mango (it is much easier to buy it ready chopped), add a tablespoon of olive oil (from the pepper jar if using roasted peppers or a bottle if not), mix well and serve over a bed of baby spinach.

You can add in chopped chicken breast to make it a meal on its own, or serve without as a side. I tend to half it and add chicken to mine and chickpeas to Mr Dog's, as he is vegetarian.

Disappointed today, 0 loss and don't understand why. Kept strictly to diet will have to rethink weight loss strategy.

Cocopops have a wonderful time with your son. Hopefully our weather with be kind to you. But know you will feel sunny whatever as you will be with your son.

To the losers , maintainers and any who have put on. You are all winners because you haven't given up. Giving up is easy but carrying on month after month and year after year is hard. I keep saying it's a marathon not a sprint and it's true. It takes a lot to change old eating habits. The old me wouldn't think twice about eating whatever I wanted but know I stop and think do I really need it. The difference is identifying a need from a want. I remember the first time I felt hungry and didn't realise that's what it was. Sounds odd but decades of overeating my body forgot what the feeling was. Last night I wanted something to eat at 9 but said no so had a hot drink instead and that did the trick. It wasn't I was hungry it's I wanted that mouth feel. Hope that makes sense.

Hot or cold weather my eating pattern stays the same. Porridge, soup and stew of some description or lasagne . Sandwiches and salads just don't satisfy me. Eating hot food even in boiling temperatures works for me . As you can't eat hot food fast and for me it slows my eating down and gives my body time to feel full.

We all have a different way to lose weight the hard thing is finding what works for you. And keeping at it . That's what Pears has given me the will to keep going. Have a good week you lovely fruits.?

I’ve been AWOL as I am so disappointed in myself.
I just can’t be consistent. I haven’t weighed in for ages, I don’t have to weigh myself to know I have piled on more weight. I just do not have the willpower to resist food.
We had a lovely day on Sunday for my DD’s birthday. The photos that included me make me want to cry. I’m pretty sure the only way I could lose weight now would be a gastric sleeve (which I am not going to do!) This time last year I was just under 2 stone lighter, then I suddenly ballooned without any real reason. DD2 and family moved in for a few months between house moves. I did snack on DGS leftovers etc but certainly not enough to pile on so much weight in such a short amount of time!
Sorry for such a moaning post. I would welcome any words of wisdom wink

Flaxseed Tue 24-May-22 08:19:33

Sorry whiff I hadn’t seen your post before moaning away wink
Lots of sensible advice there, thank you

NanKate Tue 24-May-22 09:31:28

Yes wise words as ever from Whiff. I too have a drink when I feel like snacking. I also have a pot of sugar free spearmint gum. When I feel like chewing.

Flaxseed well done for coming back to us. Weight gain is a misery and it seems to creep up on us.

Put all negative thoughts to one side. Choose a sensible eating plan ‘for life’ and get back on the Pears/Apples wagon.

Whiff Tue 24-May-22 10:01:23

Flaxseed never apologise for having a moan. NanKate made a place for us to do just that. We are all here for the same reason to lose weight no matter how long it takes or how many wobbles we have along the way. Everyone here is supportive and never critical. I have said before if losing weight was easy we all be a 12.

Four said it the other week we aren't over weight but under tall. ?.

We as women put to much pressure on ourselves to be perfect. There is no such thing as perfect but magazines and other media put this idea forward all the time. I am now 64 was a fat child, fat teenager and morbidly obese adult. My dad was suffered from malnutrition as a child that an army food gave him an ulcer when he was 28 and had to have an emergency operation.

My mom was brought up in a loving and caring family. Food was cheap cuts simply prepared and everyone finished their plates. My nan was fat and my grandad was skinny . I always thought of them as Jack Sprat and his wife. All mom's family where amazing cooks. My nan taught my dad to cook.

My brother and me where brought up on cheap cuts always a pud after dinner. Steamed sponge and custard, bread and butter pudding, bread pudding made with stale bread nothing went to waste. My dad always said any fool can follow a recipe but it's takes imagination to use left overs and make it into a feast.

Sunday lunches where an event. Remember the first time my husband came to eat. He couldn't believe the amount of food. But it was cheap food. Eg slow roast shoulder of lamb with home made mint sc and homemade onion sc thicken with cornflour. Potatoes were always 2 types either roast, boiled, mashed or croquette. Usually 5 veg and proper gravy. Then pud. Sunday tea was sandwiches usually 2 types, cake and tinned fruit with evaporated milk . In the summer if the ice cream van came around dad went out with a bowl and had it filled with ice cream

When freezers can cheaper my parents saved up for a large chest freezer. My parents never had well paid jobs and worked in factories.

Dad got a book out of the library and taught himself how to do butchery. This was in the 70's. He used to buy half a lamb, or forequarter of beef or half a pig . Only one at a time. He even made brawn out of the pig's head. Which only mom and dad eat same with pigs trotters.

Kidderminster had a whole sale market on a Thursday when dad's shifts allowed he went I loved to go with him when on school holidays. But you never saw my dad bid he was sly. The hammer would come down and sold to Mr B. The shopkeepers hated when dad was there. Because you had to buy in bulk he could get cauliflower for a penny each etc. When I was with him he used to carry all the goodies out and I stood guard while he got the car. When he came back there would be a queue of people waiting. Dad had scales in the back of the car and old plastic bags incase someone didn't have a bag. He knew how much he wanted for us and our neighbours put in there orders when they knew dad was going. Dad always made a profit which covered his petrol as well . But he never over charged people.

Dad learn to make home made wine. Carrot and parsnip peelings ,pea pods made wine while veg where blanched for the freezer. We always said dad would make wine out of old boots if he could. My daughter's favourite wine was made from scented rose petals. Dad was an amazing gardener. He taught my husband things his own father never taught him. Wine making, gardening and DIY.

Oh dear gone on a ramble again. But you can see what a loving family I come from and part of that love was good food and lots of it. How many of here used to mop up the gravy with a piece of bread. No wonder I got so big.

My husband loved me know matter how big I got. He loved his food but stayed slim. Our time together was cut short. But we where together 29 years married 22 when he died. But he was loved very much by me ,our children and all my extended family. He had from my side what his own parents and family never gave him. Plus all the food.

As I have wondered down memory lane I had better close. ?

SachaMac Tue 24-May-22 15:07:34

I remember being sent out to the ice cream man with a bowl on a Sunday afternoon Whiff. Also, going down to the bottom of my grandmas garden to pick mint, then putting it in a big cup & chopping it up finely with her pointy scissors to make the mint sauce for the lamb roast which was served with home grown veg & gravy made with the goodness of the meat. Happy days. This is making me hungry smile

Flaxseed Tue 24-May-22 19:45:47

whiff you should write a book!

I, too, had a wonderful upbringing. However, we lived hand to mouth and rarely had anything more than our three square meals a day.
I wonder if that’s why I can’t resist what I see as ‘treats’ now.

I know what you mean about hunger. I don’t really know the true feeling of it, I just get ‘peckish’ and love to graze all day hmm
Work doesn’t help as there are constant birthday, leaving do’s, baby shower, just ‘thank you’ treats.
Another good reason to look forward to my retirement! (22 months and counting!)
I am gradually coming round to planning meals that have more satiety but like all changes, they take time.
I suppose I will get there one day but it doesn’t feel like it at the moment. confused

kissngate Tue 24-May-22 20:03:44

Whiff - just wanted to say thank you for two inspiring posts.?

Whiff Wed 25-May-22 05:21:54

Thank you for your kind words. I ramble on and never really know if I make sense. But I am exactly the same in real life. Flaxseed I know what my brother would say the title of a book should be called 'Ramblings of a woman with verbal diarrhoea.' My brother is very cheeky.?

cornergran Wed 25-May-22 07:15:39

Not ramblings, whiff, wonderful memories and real support for others.

Don’t give yourself a hard time flaxseed, it’s a difficult journey we’re all on. For me it feels like running up a sand hill, I make progress then slide back a bit, it’s often hard to believe I’ll get to the top. You are planning for changes and looking to a positive future which is wonderful. Wishing you well.

Whiff Wed 25-May-22 19:29:52

Just had my Odd box yum.

fourormore Sun 29-May-22 09:19:39

The odd box is definitely odd Whiff - enjoy!
Down 1.6 this week which is a surprise as I've taken my eye off the ball this week - perhaps that's the secret - pretend you don't care!!! hmm
Before I get all 'braggy' - over the past few weeks I have put on over 2lbs so really, although this is a loss, it's only losing what has been put on. Still a loss is a loss yeh!
We seem to plateau at times but the secret is NEVER to give up! Good luck everyone!

Whiff Sun 29-May-22 09:50:32

Four odd but delicious. Well done with the loss. Like all us here the secret is not to give up. I have lost 3/4 lb which I am happy with as it's a loss. Fancied a ginger biscuit this week so made some and took them to my craft group. Had 2 at home to try and one at group. Next time will add more ginger. But everyone liked them and all of them soon went. I love baking but always do it so I take it to either exercise class or craft group. My daughter asked me to stop making them things as she works hard to say slim. Besides having 2 very active boys she does a boxercise class twice a week. And yoga at home.

Weather was beautiful yesterday and dried my washing but back to rain today.

Have a good week everyone don't forget Thursday and Friday are bank holidays .

Sarahmob Sun 29-May-22 16:42:54

Good afternoon everyone,
Another reasonable week here, I’ve maintained again which is really encouraging as it means I can do it, mentally it’s been tougher, there was lots of food about on Thursday when we had our school street party for the Jubilee and I was so tempted to nibble - even though I wasn’t hungry and didn’t even really like some of the things on offer. The strangest thing was that the chocolate in our ‘Thank a teacher day’ gift from the head wasn’t something that was tempting me - it was the disgusting mini doughnuts that they give in our lunches. But, I managed to resist apart from one little doughnut which I immediately regretted wasting the calories on.

Encouragement to all of you still battling on, you can do it.

Have a good week

Shirleyw Mon 30-May-22 01:46:17

Morning ‘all….. lost three quarters of a pound, happy with that as not been too attentive eating wise.

Whiff Mon 30-May-22 05:14:06

Sarah well done maintaining its me something to aim for. Never liked mini doughnuts as they never tasted as nice as full size ones.

Shirley well done with the loss every bit counts. And little losses soon mount up.

kissngate Mon 30-May-22 11:26:04

Morning Apples and Pears. Lost 2lb this week another 18 to go. Tweeked breakfast by using half milk and water for my cereal. Also cut down on white rice substituted cauliflower rice. Started doing some easy exercise classes on You Tube, it all helps. Have a good Jubilee week everyone.

Shirleyw Mon 30-May-22 13:23:20

Thanks Whiff , yes it sure does.

Well done kissngate, 2 is a good loss.

Jubilee weekend is going to be a testing time, have 10 staying over, apart from the expense i'm doing an afternoon tea on the Saturday, was thinking of making the platinum winner,'s trifle, shall do half the quantities though as it serves 20. Hope weather holds put....14 degrees today and heavy showers.

What is everyone doing over this long weekend?

Whiff Tue 31-May-22 07:21:35

kissngate well done with the 2lbs. Like your tweeks. It's like everyone here you have to find your own way to lose weight which works for you.

I made a Quorn mince lasagna. Then found I hadn't got any spread to make a roux so just used flour ,milk and the cheese in the all in method and it worked . In future will never put spread in it so saved a few calories. Still learning new ways after all these years

Not special treats for me because of the jubilee. But will in a couple of weeks my friend from the Midlands is coming for 4 days luckily my friend is also eating less for life so happy to eat what I do. But taking her for afternoon tea as part of her birthday present. So we are going to both enjoy that.

Heavy rain here again. Yesterday we had hail and it was freezing. ?. I don't normally like it to hot but wish it would get warmer. ?

SachaMac Wed 01-Jun-22 12:40:40

Hi all, I’m a little late checking in this week, I’ve been up to Edinburgh with one of my DD and GC for a few days. We had a lovely time and some delicious food which I thoroughly enjoyed but as expected I have paid the price on the scales this morning with a 2•5lb gain. I will attempt to get back on track before the BH weekend begins. I’ll be attending a street party on Friday night and a family BBQ on Saturday so not much hope of a loss next week!! Enjoy your weekend everyone, whatever you’re doing.

NanKate Thu 02-Jun-22 11:19:37

Hello Pears/Apples.

Well for those of us celebrating ? it all starts here ?? TODAY.

Cut yourself a bit if slack, enjoy the food and drink and then we will all re-group next week. It’s DH’s birthday on Monday so I will return on Tuesday.

Good to have your company and support.

Onward and downward folks.

fourormore Thu 02-Jun-22 19:11:53

Here here NanKate We have something to celebrate at last!
Well said!
How anyone cannot marvel at the pageant etc. around the Jubilee is beyond me. We have a poster and a couple of flags in our window so have hardly broken the bank!
I appreciate the comments on other threads about the cost etc. but, as far as I am concerned, until all countries stop spending billions, billions and more billions sending rockets into space, a few bob spent to celebrate this amazing historical event is more than worth it! We don't look after the planet we live on, yet no one seems to complain about the cost of the space-race!
Sorry - I'm off my soap box now!!!
I thoroughly endorse your advice that we all enjoy this weekend - it's great to actually have something happy to celebrate after the past couple of years which have been so miserable for so many of us.
I will still weigh on my usual Sunday but not fret when I get the inevitable rise!!!
We will never give up fruits!!!!!!!!!!!
