On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Lost pound and a quarter this week. Still doing my early morning wake up exercises and doing 25 mins when I don't go out.

Sit fit was circuit training yesterday. It was fun as always . I was paired with the 91 year old. She's lovely she hits harder on the pads when we use the boxing gloves . I am always worried incase I hit to hard but she said go for it. 12 of us yesterday. Always have to put my electric heat pad in my back once home. But the exercises do me good. I can do them better than walk. But no matter how much pain or how bad my mobility is I go every week. Once I decide to do something I committ to it.

Brain Charity open day 22nd May so on my calendar and looking forward to it. It was overwhelming last year being with so many disabled people at once but loved it. Lot look like me until we move we look "normal" . Lot of charities represented and was nice to talk to various groups . But because my neurological condition is so rare I was talking about it with others. Brain Charity have it on their website now hopefully make people aware of it. And the problems we have.

Hopefully some others will post soon about how they are getting on . Have a good week everyone.

MayBee the moist air in a sauna is a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Not a safe environment to be in. Best avoid.

My sit fit class is in a large airy room and never worry about bugs. We have all had jabs available to us.

I would like to wear my mask again on the bus and in shops but my glasses steam up and my mobility is worse than this time last year so I need to see clearly also if I get breathless it restricts my breathing so I just decided to take my chances. Had covid once last year luckily not to bad . I find having a cold is worse .
And I have 2 bug factories also know as my grandsons who when I catch a cold it's usually from them. But that doesn't stop me seeing them .

Germs and viruses are in the air we breath whether in the open air or in a closed space. No getting away from them. It's a lottery if you catch something.

MayBee70 Fri 01-Mar-24 18:55:01

Pre covid I used to go at 11am. It was quiet then. I’d love to start using the sauna again, too. It used to save me money on my hit water bill. But I think being in such a confined space is pushing it.

Whiff Fri 01-Mar-24 18:36:27

MayBee ask at the gym which is their quiet times. My friend went to the gym Christmas morning and there where 3 others. My brother goes swimming every morning at 6.30 lost over 7st now. Has his pre op on the 8,th then operation on 18th.

Gyms would be no good for me but love sit fit. Doing my morning work out every morning before breakfast then 25 mins on the days I don't go out before lunch.
We have circuit training on Monday which is always fun.

Hope your dogs paw gets better soon.

I so need to join this group, but not yet got the headspace to begin. I shall pop in from time to time until I eventually get the motivation I need to re-start my zillionth *‘healthy eating’ plan.

*substitute every diet known to humankind.

‘Theneverendingdiet!’.Every birthday my first thought is ‘ and I’m still on a blooming’ diet’. And I think of the brown rice diet that me and a friend went on when we were in our early twenties ( she’s still on a diet, too’).Although it’s more of a healthy eating diet than a lose weight diet these days. I wish there had been more information about healthy eating when I was young. I’m at my partners again and thankfully have maintained my weight. I don’t know how I’ve done so as the family stayed here last week and I ate some quite large meals. I’m not getting any exercise, though, as my dog has a nail bed infection and I can’t bring myself to go for a walk without her. One of the main reasons for being at my partners is so that she can get lots of exercise and I think it’s my fault that she’s poorly. When I get home next week I must start going to the gym again even though I’m still scared of catching covid there.

NanKate Thu 29-Feb-24 07:44:32

Good luck grannyactivist we look forward to hearing your results in a month, whatever they are. We are here to support each other. 👍

Whiff Thu 29-Feb-24 07:01:52

grannyactivist glad you are feeling better and enjoyed your week away by the sea . Don't forget to measure yourself as you may have lost inches with all the exercise and muscle weights more than fat.

If you intend to get your protein from cheese don't forget it's high in calories and saturated fats. I don't eat meat not because I didn't like it but the only way I was having it was stewed because of disability and never having 2 days the same I can't cook fresh meals every day. So make a big stew or lasagne or pasta bake enough for 6 dinners . I got fed up of only having meat stew so I have chicken as never tire of that stewed use Quorn mince, chicken pieces and sausages. Lots of veg and pulses . Lunch is always my homemade red lentil and veg soup make enough for 6 lunches and porridge cooked in the microwave wave every morning . I count calories. But we all have our own way to lose weight.

No idea what keto diet is ? But look forward to hearing your journey.

grannyactivist Wed 28-Feb-24 21:42:05

Well here I am at last. I’ve been ill, but had a week away to recover in a little cottage by the sea and now I’m ready to start getting my weight in check.

I’m not going to weigh myself for a month as I know my weight fluctuates enormously from one day to the next. After four weeks I hope to see my bathroom scales showing a lower figure than I started on - and that will be success for me.

I have a personal trainer who comes on Wednesdays and puts me through my paces, then I continue to follow his circuit regime at home on Fridays and Mondays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I either do a 20 minute ‘dance-fit’ routine or 15 minutes on my vibration plate (sometimes I do both). None of this exercise seems to have any influence on my weight, but at least it stops me from being completely unfit.

The most successful weight loss I’ve had was when I was on the keto diet, so that’s more or less what I’m planning on doing this time. Basically I cut out carbs and eat lots of vegetables and more protein than usual.

Whiff Wed 28-Feb-24 09:08:44

Morning all. Put on pound when I weighted myself Sunday. But lost it already by today's reading. But it doesn't count as I weight and record my weight on Sunday.

Sit fit was fun as usual.there where 14 of us . Took in my 500g ankle weights but told our instructor I can't do 24 5 count holds on the same leg so did it my way while everyone did it on the same I used my other leg and swapped but still ended up doing it 24 on each leg . Like most things in my life I have to do things my way but it works and can still what you want. Doing my 25 mins at home and still doing my morning wake up exercises. I like routine as it helps me cope with my HPX.

Next week at sit fit it's circuit training that's always fun. Hope you are all keeping well and keeping warm.

Whiff Tue 20-Feb-24 04:37:48

Just an update on our homework from our sit fit instructor. Last week she added toe flex's to our list this week it's bum clenches. But I do them every morning after I am washed and dressed before I leave my bedroom. Have to do the bum clenches before I take my BP as I need to sit on a chair. Made me laugh one of our members said she doesn't do them everyday but her husband does and feels better for it. Yesterday we did the conga round the circle of chairs . I had forgotten how to do it. Last time I did was at a wedding in the 80's but it was great fun.

Hope you all have a good day and don't get to wet. 🤸

Whiff Sun 18-Feb-24 18:53:11

Thanks NanKate there are 2 of them they are acting like a tag team. But I am sure you can deal with them . Love the ninja . As the red queen would say off with their heads..❤️

NanKate Sun 18-Feb-24 16:35:00

I’ll go and sort out the nasty folk Whiff 🥷😀

Whiff Sun 18-Feb-24 14:57:57

Shirley and everyone else hope you had a good week. Lost a pound today so happy about that. My brother has got to 14st 4lbs . He's operation is on the 18th March so trying to get down to just below 14st as he will put in after his operation. He won't be able to drive for 6 weeks or swim but will do all the exercises they give him. He says he no longer aches every morning since he has lost the weight and going swimming has toned his body up but of course with always have flabby wobbly bits. But he can live with them.

Nice to be on a thread where I am not being attacked. As I have been recently on another thread. But it says more about them than me.

Have a good week everyone. 🤗

Shirleyw Wed 14-Feb-24 20:50:11

They look good and tempting whiff….bet you enjoy doing that for your group…..and I bet they look forward to what you bring too lol.

Remained the same this past week. Got back to writing everything down I eat and drink like you whiff….

Whiff Wed 14-Feb-24 12:12:58

NanKate being here keeps me in the straight and narrow or should that be a wobbly track🤣.

This is what I am taking to my craft group tomorrow. 3 of our members can come as its half term. Made the gluten free Parkin and my version of bourbon creams with chocolate fudge icing in the middle. Packing the bourbons this morning one fell on the floor so had to test it 😋. But only tested the crumbs from the Parkin using gluten free flour has made no difference to the taste and it's lovely and sticky. But I never bring any home. But then again blowing my own trumpet 🎺 my friends soon make short work of everything.

NanKate Tue 13-Feb-24 08:32:59

Thanks Whiff for your honest and uplifting comments showing that we all go through phases of eating well or over indulging, but you always get back on track and that is the key I think not letting a few bad eating days become the excuse to give up.

I have been steady with my weight recently, but still need to lose some pounds. So here goes again.

Whiff Tue 13-Feb-24 06:02:34

Weight stayed the same this week which I am pleased about. Because last week was stressful and did over eat but as I don't keep any danger foods in I was having porridge with dark brown sugar as my comfort food.
Tuesday it had been 20 years since my husband died so went out to a near by village on the train and had a brunch . Had baked beans on toast. Because I can't use a dinner knife and anything crunchy gives me blood blisters in my mouth due to the blood thinners I take. I always ask for my food to be cut up in the kitchen when by myself and made sure the beans covered the toast to make it soggy. But I have never been refused help or anyone bats an eyelid and thinks I am strange. So glad I moved to the north west.
Also had 2 mugs of hot chocolate and a large piece of raspberry cheesecake delicious.

Wednesday went with my daughter and youngest grandson to a garden centre had mushroom soup ,bread and butter and even croutons. Then had to try out all the sheds . What is it with the male of the species and sheds or man cave as I called my husband's.

Thinking about sheds there used to be a comedy programme on the TV and the man and his neighbour had chairs in theirs and home brewed beer. Can't remember who was in it or the name . My husband had his home brewed beer and wine in the garage.

Sit fit was fun as usual yesterday and she had us walking on our toes round 16 chairs both ways. Added to our homework flexing our toes I had added it to my wake up exercises. I am still doing them every morning and my 25 mins when home.

Going with my daughter and grandsons to the theatre tomorrow to see The Tiger who came to tea. I liked the film on channel 4 be interesting to see how the tiger is done on stage.

Made a gluten free Parkin on Sunday ready for craft group on Thursday. 3 can come as it's half term and the one can't have gluten but have used another craft friends aunties recipe just used gluten free flour. Smells and looks like normal Parkin I made before. I wasn't happy with the marmalade cake I made from a gluten free cookbook as it contained yogurt tasted great but weird texture so decide to use my recipes but use gluten free flour and baking powder.

Hope you all have had a good week and achieved what you wanted.

Whiff Mon 05-Feb-24 17:53:32

Shirley glad you are feeling better and the weight loss was a boost you needed after feeling poorly.

CocoPops you know what to do and have a plan in place. Your son is doing brilliantly . 5km that's impressive no wonder his legs hurt.

Nansnet everyday is a fresh start you will get back to it you know want to do .

grannyactivist welcome it takes a lot of thinking about what you need to do to lose the weight . Everyone has a different way . Only way I can do it is by counting calories. Others have different way. But remember it's a marathon not a sprint. NanKate renamed dieting eating less for live which is a better way to think of it . I had to cut out my foods I have no control over which wasn't easy . Remember when you decide to start measure yourself as well weigh yourself. Don't set yourself a time limit or a set number of pounds to loss a week. As that puts to much pressure on you. Been there and done that for decades..

This week put on three quarters of a pound but lost 1/2" off my waist. But I have been doing the morning exercises my sit fit instructor gave us every morning . And been doing 25 mins of exercise everyday I haven't gone out.

Sit fit was fun today and we had time for relaxation which was sitting with our eyes closed and breathed in at 50 out on 49 in on even numbers and out on odds . One of our group was asleep by zero.

Off out for the day tomorrow as it will be 20 years since my husband died and don't want to stay in so going to a village on the train near me for a nice lunch and wander room.

Have a good week everyone.

Nansnet Mon 05-Feb-24 05:05:05

Had a bad week this past week. Too many temptations put in my way, due to a couple of friends birthday celebrations, which totally threw me off plan for the whole week. I know, I'm very weak! My willpower has been non-existent!

Back to it today, and trying to mend the damage that I've done!

grannyactivist Sun 04-Feb-24 20:01:46

Well I took courage and braved the scales naked on Feb. 1st. Oops 140lbs. I took a selfie standing sideways. Not a good look! I have planned meals for a week and resolved not to eat out for a month. I will weigh in again on March 1st. Meanwhile my son is doing well. We had a video chat earlier today. He has been going to the gym for years but now has put an NHS App on his phone and goes jogging with Steve Cram's recorded voice encouraging on the way. He ran 5 km this morning and said his legs are killing him! However he's 12lbs down and his face looks less jowly. Onward dear pears.

Shirleyw Sun 04-Feb-24 04:36:24

Thanks nansnet just got the remains of a cough now seems to linger.

Made myself go on the scales…lost 2 lbs would you believe! So happy I stepped on them , giving me a boost.

Plans to do some weeding today as it’s not freezing at the moment so that’s extra exercise for me.

Hope your all ok….

Nansnet Wed 31-Jan-24 08:08:48

CocoPops, well done to your son! It's good that your feel inspired by him, and to have a bit of friendly competition along the way!

Shirleyw, hope you make a good recovery, and soon feeling well again.

Whiff, flowers for you this week. It's good to remember our loved ones, even if it brings a few tears occasionally.

Shirleyw Tue 30-Jan-24 20:46:46

Hi all…you have all done fabulously well. Like cocopops I’ve not dare go on scales, I will do soon.
That’s good coco your son losing 10lbs, onwards and downwards for him.
Next week shall report the shock on my scales lol.

Am just getting over covid, blooming nuisance, its certainly doing the rounds isn’t it?

Whiff Tue 30-Jan-24 19:12:28

NanKate thank you. But you inspire me to keep going by starting this thread. Love it here.

CocoPops your son's done brilliantly . Bet he will be joining a gym soon. Next time you face time eachother you will see a different every time you talk.

I went to bed at 8 last night and feel fine today no aching muscles from yesterday's sit fit. Our instructor always says is everyone ok to go a bit over no one has said no yet. Been going a year didn't realise until the other day. But I love going. Still do my morning wake routine and my 20 mins when I am in.

Routine helps me cope with my disability. Also having a weepy week . Friday would have been my husband's 67th birthday,3rd anniversary of our first date in 1975 and on the 6th 20 years since he died. Normally I am ok few tears on the day but it's not effected me like this for 6 years. But I haven't binge eaten which I am happy about.
