On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle.

We now have a small band of ā€˜regulars’ called Pears and Apples. I am so grateful to those who have stayed loyal and contributed a lot of useful information and given support, especially Whiff šŸ‘

Do join us, the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.

Pass on any useful diet tips.

You have nothing to lose on this thread, other than weight.

Our mantra is - EAT LESS FOR LIFE.

Aveline Wed 14-Jan-26 16:37:48

Amazing what daft diets they had back then.

Whiff Wed 14-Jan-26 19:23:36

Cabbage soup diet ,then there was the grapefruit and boiled egg diet. Atkins . Taking PLJ before a meal was supposed to take pounds off. It was so sour could peel the skin off the inside of your mouth .
Carnation meal replacement drinks remember trying that one was supposed to be strawberry flavoured tasted vile .

But there have been some crazy ones the blood type diet was all the craze in America.
Glad we are use our common sense.

Shirleyw Wed 14-Jan-26 21:05:46

Oh yes, PLJ…….also there were ā€˜limit biscuits’ as meal replacement…..

MayBee70 Wed 14-Jan-26 23:50:51

Some of the diets do have an element of truth to them. Because of the way I’m looking to reduce my bad cholesterol I’m getting a lot of info on instagram. Some of it tells you which time of day is best to eat certain food due to how the liver works. And yesterday I read one that said to eat grapefruit in the evening because the liver works in a different way when we’re asleep. I’m sure that a lot of it is correct because it started off with me having to take my iron tablets on an empty stomach but that the iron needed vitamin c to work properly. The problem with those fad diets that we were all on is that they made out that one thing would work when we had to look at our whole diet and lifestyle.I’ve gone back to having my banana bread at lunchtime to break my fast. I wasn’t looking forward to the stuff I was trying to replace it with and I do make it with wholemeal flour, Benecol, flax seed nuts and sultanas

Whiff Sun 18-Jan-26 15:09:27

MayBee if you are on any tablets make sure you can have grapefruit. Two of my tablets there is a warning not to have grapefruit in any form .
I have a fat free tea bread recipe if you would like it . It tastes great and very easy to make and keeps for days . It does get sticky it's the inter action between the fruit and sugar.

Shirley I forgotten about limits biscuits tasted like sawdust. Ryvita was vile . Like eating cardboard.

Lost half a pound this week so pleased with that. Need to be careful this week as craft group and AGM both on Wednesday. Then Friday out to lunch with my 2 GN friends who live in towns near to me . The restaurant we are going to the Sparrowhawk is set in woodland haven been for years but still same owners and they do food I can eat .

I only use oil olive spread . Makes my cakes very light. Plus found little bit of spread tastes better than other spreads.

MayBee70 Sun 18-Jan-26 15:48:13

I cook everything with Benecol because of my cholesterol. Trouble with tea bread is that it’s fat free but I like it with butter! My weight is creeping back up again. Seem to have lost my mojo diet and exercise wise. I sometimes can’t sleep because I’m feeling hungry. I read that eating a few soaked almonds in the evening helps you to sleep better and not feel hungry. Going to try that tonight.

Whiff Mon 19-Jan-26 06:08:57

That's the beauty of this tea bread tastes delicious doesn't need any spread. Make it for friends and offered spread but they eat it without like me. Tastes good made with gluten free flour .

Trouble with nuts is they are high in calories and some are high in fats .

Next time you feel hungry have a hot drink and then wait half an hour . We can confuse being thirsty with hunger . I find I am thirsty not hungry . If a drink doesn't work then I do some sorting out and the time flies by and is then my meal time .

Whiff Wed 21-Jan-26 04:54:07

A third thread on weight lost jab. Can anyone tell me as they all say this . The jab stops the food noise 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷.

What the hell is food noise ? Is it you are hungry or want to eat ?

Some foods make sounds when you prepare and eat them . But I have never heard a cake say eat me 🤣

MayBee70 Thu 22-Jan-26 16:38:43

My appetite varies a lot. If I’m really worried about something I can barely eat. If I’m tired I find myself wanting to eat all the time so I suppose that’s food noise. Post Christmas I always seem to crave food all the time and that’s how I am at the moment. All I can think is that some people are like that all the time? Bit like when I smoked and couldn’t stop thinking about the next cigarette so I had to stop smoking completely. Or if I’ve got a box of chocolates in the house and have to eat the whole lot.

Whiff Thu 22-Jan-26 17:15:23

MayBee it's just wanting something to eat. It's how all those on the jabs call it food noise. Which is nonsense. You either want something to eat or not . I eat sometimes but aren't hungry I just want to eat. Other times and forget I haven't had lunch and Mondays I don't eat lunch because my sit fit class is at lunchtime.

I hate the fact people have to make things up just to justify paying for expensive jabs. Bet they wouldn't pay for flu or covid jabs
I am plain speaking as you know .

Whiff Mon 26-Jan-26 09:20:19

Morning pears. Lost half a pound this week but it's better than on. Circuit training at sit fit this afternoon that's always fun . Some of my older friends punch hard. We have boxing gloves and pads as one of the exercises. Each of the 7 exercises is done for a minute and we do it twice.
My cleaner started on Thursday and she gave me shower room a thorough clean the tiles look like when they where first put in. Reached places I can't.
Something on everyday again this week .
Have a good week gang . 😊

NanKate Mon 26-Jan-26 12:43:25

Well done Whiff any loss is good.

I’ve been off the grid for a week as I had a gum infection, followed by any allergic reaction to the antibiotics, followed by oral thrush 🄺

Feeling a lot better today.

Shirleyw Tue 27-Jan-26 02:22:48

Oh dear nankate hope your improving, sounds painful.

Well done whiff. Your sit fit classes sound fun, I bet you look forward to going each week.

Maintained this week…

Whiff Fri 30-Jan-26 05:54:03

NanKate hope you are feeling better . Hopefully they gave you a different antibiotic that has helped you .

Shirley well done maintaining. I do have fun at my sit fit class . When we do circuit training we do it in pairs so we chat as well as exercise . Move it or lose is fun as well only problem is she does things in counts of 4 or 8 which my HPX brain doesn't always keep up but I get there in the end. In sit fit everything is done in 12's and don't try and do 3 different exercises swapping between them within a song . But I do love going to both classes. But I do tell our move or lose it instructor she has to shout out when we switch which I do weekly . There are more able bodied in move it or lose it . Some have arthritis or heart problems but not limb problems like all my sit fit class. But by doing both classes I get a full work out . Sit fit been going 3 years move it or lose it a year. Once I start something I don't give up. Like my 7 exercises at home and even do them on holiday and at home my 500 rotations on my static pedals which I even do on classes day.

Just been reading and watched a woman on short interview about the major side effects of those weight lost jabs . Last year over 80,000 gallbladder operations where done and a leading gallbladder surgeon said vast majority was people who had been using the jab . Apparently gallstones is a common side effects of the jabs .

Glad we pears are sensible and do it the hard way and never give up .

MayBee70 Fri 30-Jan-26 18:36:39

Just been watching that news item about gall stones. I listened to a really interesting podcast about the gut biome this morning. It reinforced my concerns about how taking something for one problem can affect your whole body. Which, if it is something life saving is acceptable but surely not if it’s
to lose weight. Especially as you seem to have to be on weight loss drugs for life. Although my weight has crept up recently I still seem to have stabilised at 9st which I think is the weight I’m meant to be. I spent most of my adult life trying to weigh less than I should be. I’m eating really healthily with my cholesterol lowering diet. Also my IBS seems to be under control even though I’m eating a lot more fibre. I’ve switched to tea bread now. I’d perfected my banana bread recipe but it was so yummy I kept wanting to eat it more than once a day, whereas I like the tea bread but don’t keep wanting to eat another slice.I have it with Benecol and it doesn’t have as much sugar in it as the banana bread.

NanKate Fri 30-Jan-26 20:43:31

MayBee79 that banana bread sounds yummy.

Thanks Whiff feeling much better. I didn’t have any more antibiotics. I will have one dodgy tooth taken out next Friday.

My appetite is low at present and I have to go very carefully after the extraction, so I will weigh myself then, but I do feel a bit lighter.

NanKate Fri 30-Jan-26 20:44:11

Sorry Maybee70 not 79 😳

MayBee70 Sat 31-Jan-26 11:36:39

Having listened to several podcasts over the past couple of days I think I’m going to send away for the ZOE Daily 30. It does look very expensive but having checked out the ingredients it contains a lot of the things I’m buying for my cholesterol lowering diet which are costing me a fortune.

Whiff Sun 01-Feb-26 11:24:37

MayBee just looked at ingredients of ZOE. You have IBS it contains Buckthorn which is a laxative.Lions mane is a fungi which can give stomach upset, diarrhoea and nausea.Maitake not to be taken if on blood thinners or anything that lower
blood sugar .

ZOE is very expensive and lot of different fungi in it. Sounds more like Chinese medicine ingredients. If you do take it daily it may built up in your body and set your IBS off. Please be very careful. But I am not a fan of faddy things that are supposed to be good for you. I would rather stick with healthy diet and only take things doctors have prescribed.
I do take daily cod liver capsule, B12 as I don't eat meat , combined calcium, vitD and vit K,folic acid and vitamin C. But my GP said they are fine for me to take.

I lowered my cholesterol by having a healthy diet . I don't eat meat not because of cholesterol but because I can choke on it even well stewed and shredded one of the joys of my HPX . I can choke on my own salvia or water . I have given up on chicken . Might eat fish when out but would rather eat vegetarian. I use Quorn sausages, chicken pieces and mince at home . Use own brand oil olive spread ,use olive oil or rapeseed oil to brown sausages in the oven . Only have cheese once a month but 50g made into a sauce if I make lasagna or pasta bake for 6 dinners . My cholesterol was 6.2 now 4.4 .

NanKate glad you are better . Hope the tooth extraction doesn't hurt .

Well lost 1 and half pounds this week. But got cuppa and chat in the morning and Friday going out for the day . Will be 22 years since my husband died same length of time we where married and don't want to stay home . So going to treat myself to a nice lunch after having a wander round the shops .

Saw my GP on Friday reckons the 1.5 cm void under my scalp has been there some time but will know more when I see my neurologist in March .

Have a good week pears.

NanKate Fri 06-Feb-26 20:49:20

More from me soon. Aching jaw where tooth came out today.

My friend has been on what I think is called the Jane plan and lost 3 stone.

Calorie counting is the only way for me.

CocoPops Fri 06-Feb-26 21:28:55

Hi Pears, Nankate I started the New Year with a painful molar. Dentist removed the nerve which was torture! Then his plan to do a root canal was abandoned because he found the damn thing was cracked all the way down.
Dentists here are very keen to give one a gob full of beautiful teeth and wanted to do an implant, bone graft and crown. I thought it best removed and had it extracted instead. Also had 2 old crowns replaced. So January was about teeth and
next month will be cataract surgery. Oh the joys of old age!!
Maybe My weight stabilizes at 10st BMI = 22.6 but I am happier when 10lbs lighter so I keep trying.....

TheSunRisesInTheEast Fri 06-Feb-26 22:33:38

Hi slimmers šŸ‘‹. I joined Weight Watchers 10 years ago at 11st and lost 2st in 4 months. I weighed in every week, stayed for the talk, and kept the weight off until the class had to finish due to covid. The leader retired and I never went to another slimming class again.

Fast forward 6 years and I'm now 13.7st. Having denied myself so many treats while going to Weight Watchers, I simply ate for England when I no longer had to weigh in.

I've really had enough of the extra weight now, I'm ready to do something about it. I know I must eat less and move more, but it's easier said than done.

Now that I've found you, hopefully it will keep me on track if I know that I will be posting my weight loss every week.

Please wish me luck šŸ¤ž.

CocoPops Sat 07-Feb-26 00:35:20

Welcome "Sun", It's the same old story isn't it! When the support and interest stops the motivation goes. Lots of support here so I suggest you check in weekly. Have you still got your weight watchers books/ recipes?

MayBee70 Sat 07-Feb-26 12:09:02

I’m following someone on instagram who posts recipes and has published a few books. He has battled with his weight throughout his life and I find his recipes very simple; lots of slow cooker recipes etc. I keep forgetting his name, though.. (will look it up).

MayBee70 Sat 07-Feb-26 12:16:39

Fraser Reynolds. He’s on Facebook, too.
