On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples. I am so grateful to those who have stayed loyal and contributed a lot of useful information and given support, especially Whiff 👍

Do join us, the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.

Pass on any useful diet tips.

You have nothing to lose on this thread, other than weight.

Our mantra is - EAT LESS FOR LIFE.

Whiff Tue 03-Dec-24 07:04:07

Bigred brilliant losing 3st.
I don't buy foods I have no control over bread and bread products ,ice cream , chocolate and biscuits. I do buy block of 400g mature cheddar but cut it into 8 and freeze it for making cheese sauce which I only make every 8 weeks . But never use any spread in the sauce as there is enough fat in the cheese to make a really good sauce.

The book NanKate is great for anyone counting calories but also for showing how many carbs in each food stuff. Ideal for anyone cutting out carbs as they can be hidden in foods .

This week knew I would be up as legs swollen and sleeping through the night no loo visits . Put on 3.25 lbs but own up to 1lb of that as had 3 treats this week. But each day is a new day and new start.

keepingquiet I used to snack on yogurt coated rice cakes low cals but tasty but can't have them anymore since being on blood thinners as I get blood blisters in my mouth if I eat anything crunchy. Unfortunately biscuits can be dunked 🤦🤦🤦.

Keeping at it everyone it's not easy losing weight but well worth it . 🤸🏃🧘

Well done Whiff. You have come up with our latest slogan.

‘Each day is a new day and new start’

This together, with ‘Eating less for Life’ should be on the front page of our Welcoming thread to new members of the Pears/Apples Club.

Finally Ive lost 4 pounds and its taken ages as I used to cheat. I don't eat bread Monday to Friday or cakes and biscuits. I can manage like this as I know the weekends will be easier, I don't go mad on chocolate or anything but I have crusty bread for lunch, pudding after dinner and a treat. It will take ages to get another 1st 2lbs off, roughly 2/3lbs a month which is not much I know but in 6 months i might be there. I can't stand low fat cheese though I have ordinary mature cheddar and feta cheese but in smaller quantities. I only like butter but often have sandwiches without at a weekend, did a leek dish yesterday cooked in a little butter,I use it for things like that.
By now I would normally have scoffed countless mince pies and shortbread but so far nothing. Once I start I can't stop.

NanKate Sun 08-Dec-24 11:59:41

Well done Allsorts.

Losing weight imo is a long hard struggle, but the end results are worth the effort.

I’m on a plateau at present but realise this won’t last, so I’m not giving up.

Keep going gals 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️‍➡️

Whiff Sun 08-Dec-24 13:04:02

Allsorts that's brilliant. And you know all your weaknesses but haven't given in to them . But still have a bit of what you like. And I think that makes more special and a treat.

Lost 1.75 lb this week. But did eat 3 mince pies on Friday . Had 2 while watching the Brain Charity Christmas concert and took one home . I was offered a pack of 6 but said no. I never buy mince pies so it was a treat having them . But I had a fun time . At the Brain Charity I don't feel self conscious about singing out loud I have a terrible voice but no one cares . We did learn a song with sign language then I realised doing the signs I stutter in sign language as my hands shake 🤣.

We did a song to the tune of know not going to spell it correctly but it was frey a jaqua I know that's weird can't think how it's spelt . Will have to Google it and get back .
I love mince pies I love mince pies
I love mince I love mince
I love mince pies I love mince pies
I love mince I love mince..
Any way it was fun as we sang it in the round .

Some where dancing but everyone had a great time .
Unfortunately the storm had started at 4 but had taxi home when it finished at 5 .

NanKate staying the same weight means you are using all the calories you are taking in to make your body work efficiently.

Have a good week everyone. 🤸

Whiff Sun 08-Dec-24 13:07:54

Doh it was Frere Jacques. 🤦🤦🤦

bigmama1960 Sun 08-Dec-24 16:24:47

Can I join your merry band please?
I was always slim...married 1st time size 8, umpteen marriages, pregnancies and weight gains later up to a 22!!
I have done SW and lost 5st, got to target then put it back on again within 4 years. Now doing WW but I think SW suited me better so thinking of going back when the special offer I signed up with expires in February. Does anyone have any advice.
I am a strange shape 5'2" with shorter legs than I would like, very big boobs which I hate (were normal til the children started to appear) waist disappeared and shares an area with my hips and bum !!

CocoPops Mon 09-Dec-24 05:18:00

Only 1/2lb lost but I did celebrate my birthday at a restaurant.
Wow bigmama You certainly had success losing 5 st with SW.
Whiff I'll be singing your song when I make mince pies for my book club tomorrow.

Whiff Mon 09-Dec-24 06:08:18

bigmama1960 I am a funny shape . Always been bottom heavy never had big boobs infact when I lie on my back they disappear. When I brought my first bra at 12 my brother said you only need 2 egg cups and a piece of string. My brother is still cheeky . He's only 16 months younger than me .

Same height as yourself at heaviest was 21st 2lb but was over 19st for decades size 32.

I tried diet clubs after having the children when the weight piled on but they where ok if you lost weight but treated like a child if you didn't this was in the 1980's. So decided to count calories which I still do as it's the only way I lost the 7st and the realisation it's a marathon not a sprint if I only lost quarter of a pound I was happy. Took 5 years to lose that . But if I had a bad day and eat too much I didn't give up and started again the next day. Haven't given up yet. Still trying to lose the last stone and been trying last 3 years. But I am now a 16 not a size 32.

If you have read the pages you see we are a friendly bunch and NanKate renamed dieting 'eating less for life' which is a better way to look at it . I got the book she recommended and it's become a must have and use it everyday day. Before that I used an old Rosemary Conley book from the 80's and wrote in cals of foods in it.

I know foods I have no control over so don't buy them unless I have visitors then they take the things home with them if any left over.

I weight and measured everything I eat and drink and write it down and count the calories. It may seem a chore at first but it soon becomes habit .

Measured yourself because if you start to exercise some times you may find you stay the same weight or put a bit on but lost inches.

Deciding to do something about your weight is the main thing and don't give up even if you have a bad day. Every day is a new start. As you can probably tell I ramble on.🤣.

CocoPops I keep singing it . But it was fun learning it . A loss not matter how much is a win especially when you have celebrated. Your book club will love your mince pies 😋.

No sit fit class today as our instructor is still ill so will do extra exercises to make up for not going .

Have a good week all

NanKate Mon 09-Dec-24 08:02:03

BigMama you have come to the right place for help and support.

Like Whiff I am counting my daily calories and recording everything I eat and drink. After a couple of weeks it has become the norm.

Here is the book Whiff and I use. Can’t find photo of book so will add it later for you to see.

NanKate Mon 09-Dec-24 17:52:40

Hope this photo gets through this time.

NanKate Mon 09-Dec-24 17:53:20

This is how the book is set out.

keepingquiet Tue 10-Dec-24 15:25:19

Hi everyone

Have put on 2lbs this week! Maybe not surprising as I've been away and so couldn't stick to my meal plan so easily, though I did try to choose healthy options.
Also my walking is falling behind, mostly due to the terrible weather.

Keep going everyone- soon be Christmas lol

Off to stock up on my healthy items now though so should be back on track with the plan this week- let's hope so, as it is easy to get discouraged and fall back on bad habits, especially at this time of year when there are so many temptations around!

NanKate Tue 10-Dec-24 19:17:14

The best advice on this thread is as follows:

Tomorrow is another day
Don’t dwell on what has happened
Look forward and not back
Start again, and again etc

Shirleyw Tue 10-Dec-24 20:32:34

Half a pound is good * cocoapops* and with your birthday.

Lost 1 lb this week.

bigmama1960 Tue 10-Dec-24 22:29:40

NanKate

Hope this photo gets through this time.

Thanks, I see there are pocket versions too, are they as good?

Allsorts Wed 11-Dec-24 07:59:02

I must get a book, but if it has sugar in or fat I am very careful. For the first time ever I have not eaten all the mince pies and a Christmas cake as once I start i don't stop. I look at two bags of sugar in supermarkets and think thats how much I have lost. Not giving up now.
I give up so many times but come on her and not judged but encouraged to try again, Thank you.

keepingquiet Wed 11-Dec-24 09:08:26

Yes Allsorts- I am glad I came here because I am in this for the long game.

I had a terrible shock when I finally braved the scales after a long time.

I knew my clothes were no longer fitting me and I was tired all the time and constantly craving food.

This thread came along at just the right time for me and although I gained weight this week I know I can now make the changes I need to.

I have indulged in a couple of mince pies though!

We can all develop the best ways of caring for ourselves that suits us. I think that is the only way we can make the changes we need.

So lets keep going!

NanKate Wed 11-Dec-24 20:20:45

Bigmama I don’t know about the pocket version. I keep my full size version in the kitchen on the scales with a note book.

Before you go shopping work out what you intend buying, check it out in the book and very quickly you will learn how to keep within your limit. The book has been a game changer for me.

I have given myself a daily limit of 1,500 calories a day, which is higher than most people would choose, but it suits me and I am losing weight slowly and regularly.

NanKate Fri 13-Dec-24 07:57:34

At last I have now lost half a stone. It’s been a struggle but now I am ready for the next half stone. Phew !

keepingquiet Fri 13-Dec-24 09:53:56

Well done Nankate! Keep going- you have shown to yourself you can do this!

CocoPops Fri 13-Dec-24 15:29:48

NanKate Brilliant work.

Shirleyw Fri 13-Dec-24 21:42:19

Well done nankate brilliant.

NanKate Sun 15-Dec-24 08:40:14

Thanks all for your kind words. We are going to family at Christmas and I don’t want to spoil the loss I have had, so will try to make sensible choices in what I eat, while still joining in all the merriment. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Whiff Mon 16-Dec-24 05:49:17

Shirley well done with the pound . It takes eating 3,500 cals less than your body needs to lose 1lb . Mind you I think it's less to put on 1lb well it is with me . 🤦🤷.

Allsorts looking at things the same amount as you have lost is surprising but also spurs you on . The book is brilliant. I keep mine in the living room on my side table by me with my note book and pen. When going out to eat I look up things then make my decision what to have or if going to a cafe end up just having a drink.

NanKate brilliant achievement bet you have noticed a different with your clothes.

keepingquiet that's the thing about this thread no judgements just encouragement. The hardest thing is deciding to lose weight and sticking to it no matter how many set backs you have . Every day is a new start and for me a life style change .

Lost 2.25lbs this week that's including a couple of goodies but the trusty book came in handy for those.

But had a rotten week healthwise. My GP put me on Adcal-D3 tablets as I have Osteopenia in my left hip. I have had muscle spasm/ cramp in my right hamstring since Saturday last week thought it's because I was jigging in the kitchen . But as per me carried on as usual . I am no wimp and used to pain as been in pain my whole life. But the pain and spasm/ cramping got worse from Thursday haven't known pain like it for 3 years so bad I cried . Plus my chronic fatigue went into overdrive and kept falling asleep. Wasn't until Friday I looked up if you can you have to much calcium and vitamin D. Turns out you can . So after 2 weeks didn't take any on Saturday and won't take them again . They stopped my pain tablets working . And I got very frightened and didn't want to go back to how I was . My daughter and grandsons came on Saturday and said mom you look awful ,said I am glad I look how I feel and burst into tears. The spasm/ cramping was worse on Saturday so kept drinking mainly just water to try and flush the calcium out . Every muscle and joint hurt all week even my collar bones.

Yesterday no spasm/ cramping and pain levels down . Hopefully will feel better today. Got blood test this morning but having a taxi and going to sit fit this afternoon but already told me teacher I wouldn't be doing any exercises just going for the company.

I have still done my wake up exercises but very gently and slowly all week just to see if they would help.

Anyway hopefully back to my normal self this week .

Have a good week everyone. Hard to believe it's Christmas next week. 🤸😊
