My DGS has difficulties remembering his x tables. Asked to reel them off and he can do, but the teacher gives them 100 mixed x tables questions and he struggles.

Any bright ideas please? My DD has found some songs which they're learning at home together and she's hoping the different tunes will trigger the answers.

Thought I'd try gransnetters for some tried and tested strategies. Grateful for any help.

The GC whose problem started this thread must be a teenager by now!

I expect he's left school now!

Don’t need fingers for 9 x as all I do is deduct one from the number of nines so 6x 9 becomes 5 plus 4 =54.

Should have added that the 4 is added to make 9.

I’ve reported this thread, because of all the repeated spamming.
The hints on remembering tables are always useful, but the only way of doing better in random question tests is to practise random questions.
We had a book full of strips of questions, starting with a mix of one table, then moving on to a mix of different tables. The aim was for the child to improve on its own score, not to be compared with others.
Lots of apps test random tables too-Table Mountain for example, but the app needs to
focus on the answers, not the game.

I think he might have got the hang of it by now. He’s had 8years to practice

My younger son never did learn his multiplication table Said he didn’t need to. He has a maths degree from Imperial College
