Sorry. I didn’t mean to make assumptions. I did assume physical neglect too.
On paper, my family seemed completely fine and normal.
I realize my experience is extreme, but that doesn't mean OP's father isn't abnormal too, even if he's no where near as bad as my parents.
Even though sundown's situation is different from mine, it's similar in that we both don't have warm feelings towards our parent(s). I don't know where exactly her feelings of guilt stem from, but from my personal experience, I know it's all too easy to feel like something is wrong with you when everyone around you appears to have happy and functioning relationships with their parents.
It took a lot of time and healing to realize that there was nothing wrong with me, and that it's not my fault that I utterly lost at the parent lottery.
Back then it would have been very nice and helpful for someone to tell me that I deserved better, instead of always being told to just accept my parents for who they are and other minimizing and/or gaslighting statements (such as they still love me, or that they didn't actually mean what they said).
