How old is elderly?

My friends and I, all in mid 60's, were discussing when we will feel ready to be described "elderly". We get really p'd off when people our age are called elderly as we certainly don't feel it. And when does old age start? Any thoughts?

That should have said….”to see a Stroke Consultant”! Perhaps the clinic was correctly named after all! 🙄

I'd say elderly is 80+!

I'm 59 and clearly remember when I was 7 and thought anyone over 15 was ancient!

Spuddy Gosh thanks! Just a few months to go then

None of us were elderly when this thread was started grin

No Spuddy defo not 80 I’m not putting a photo up but definitely not necessarily elderly at 80
My cousin who still wears nice modern clothes, a little make up and earrings and last year had her eyebrows tattooed on because she felt they were disappearing and at the moment is doing an online Spanish course …..is a very young 98

I was a primagravida at 37. No offence taken.
Today at the eye hospital the junior consultant explained to me that my right eye had a double operation when the cataract removal went wrong and they decided to fix it on site rather than call me back later for a second operation. She explained that it will last for years down the line until I die. No further treatment will be required. I suddenly realised she could see me with a few years ahead. More than a few. Bring it on.
So I have recklessly agreed to have the left eye done on my birthday. I’m looking at it as a birthday present and worst case scenario is blindness but most unlikely, leaving me with 73% eyesight in the right eye. Since the first operation my balance has improved significantly. I’m elderly but doing the best I can.

Aging is subjective; it's more about mindset than a number. Many feel "old" when health limits their activities, not at a specific age. Embrace each stage and stay active.

I am 79 and do not consider myself either elderly or ancient. My back causes me a lot of problems but that has little to do with age. My brain still works quite well and I expect to be treated no more or less than any other adult person. ~The british seem to be stuck with attention to age rather than attention to you as a person. It is a way of constantly trying to pigeonhole everyone. If you look in the paper , whatever is being written about it always begins with xxx aged 61 or xxx aged 93. and for women constantly being defined as mother of or wife of xxx . Well I have run my life since a teenager on
the lines of so long as what I do doesnt harm others and I can afford it without getting into debt , then I am entitled to carry on on my own sweet way without being put into a category by other people. I intend to continue in the same way for the rest of my life, and woe betide anyone who tries to talk down to me or tell me what I should and should not do. Lets all carry on regardless. Well we cant do any worse that the self satisfying, cheating, devious load of politicians that purport to represent us. I do not want to be pitied, condescended to, or "taken over" by any well meaning person, unless I decide that is what I want.

How old is elderly. I would say it is always about 15 years older than I am.

varian

A neighbour who works in the supermarket checkout asked me if I was thinking about reitiring. I told her that I had retired when I was 73, about three years ago,

She thoughjt I was at least ten years younger than I am. I put this down to the fact I colour my hair and I was wearing a mask.

Varian I thought your "mask" comment meant you had a whole "fake face" on of someone much younger - an actual person-type mask..
grin

I expect you just meant a regular one over your nose and mouth!

Once I have had my sons children staying for 48 hours I come to the decision I am getting old, they are young and ask endless questions about anything and everything so when home time comes it is a welcome relief to get a rest, that is until they come back again because they want to stay at my house as much as possible and seem to find it interesting and comfortable and take great enjoyment from the two little dogs.

Being old is nothing to be ashamed of.

Absolutely. I think the only reason people get so hung up on it is because they have an image in their head of an 'elderly' person that they don't like the look of.

I'm not elderly but at 68 I am old. But I'm not old in the way people of 68 were old 50 years ago (if that makes sense). I don't know many women my age who are.

I remember when I was young all the black clad, blue rinse (or hairnet) women who used to stand around the bus stop slagging off the younger women. My DM was old by the time she was 40 and thoroughly enjoyed telling people she couldn't do things because 'she wasn't as young as she used to be'.

My dad was 96 and he used to go to the local supermarket using his stick to buy his Export Vodka. One day he came home and talked about the silly old man in front of him who couldn't count out his money. He called him a silly old fool.

I took my 90 year old mum shopping one day and she met an ex teaching colleague in the supermarket. She went up to him and asked if he was still teaching. He advised her that he had retired 20 years beforehand. Don't you just love them!

Elderly is apparently about 15 years before you die. Don’t know how to work that out though!
It’s when you start showing typical signs of age, and is different for everyone depending on many things, including genes but not necessarily on years.

Hmm this past year I had to have gallbladder removed. Later had the kung flu tho not a bad case. Seems weaker each year. Developed cataracts in both eyes, but also an epithelial membrane in the left so no cataract surgery until resolved. So yup, feel old at 69.
