Have you ever searched for "grandmother emoji"?
See attached.
When did you last see a grandmother or even great-grandmother who looks like this?
It's the hair in a bun that really gets my goat.

Doesn't bother me. Why does an old person looking old bother people at all?

And, yes, she looks sweet. Not like some hard-faced old people I've occasionally seen.

Because it's stereotyping.

I don't know anyone who looks like that.

She may look little and sweet but perhaps she be fierce 😃

Doesn’t bother me. I don’t look like that.
DH doesn’t look like the golden grandpa. He has a full head of hair at 71. His Dad was never bald either.

It’s difficult though because probably none of us look like that and I don’t suppose any of us fit a granny profile, not judging by the posts about make up, hair styles and clothes (not to mention S E X) so what could they use sarahsyn?
Interesting as to what the emoji would look like in others minds ?

When I had my last baby I was 38. The girl in the hospital bed opposite me was 16 and her DM was younger than me.
That emoji needs updating but not sure how!
The U3A walking group all look the same in the group photos. Outdoor gear and woolly hats are the uniform. Most are grey haired. We all look alike!🧓

Stereotypes are actually useful. Not all of them, obviously, but they have arisen because we actually need to make judgements and decisions in various circumstances. On the whole, provided they are not used improperly (as in being deliberately harmful) they serve useful purposes.

The emoji in question give a quick impression of an old woman (skin colour can be chosen from the one shown in the OP to all shades up to very dark skin, or you can go neutral as in the golden one). Nobody is going to mistake this image for anything other than an old woman.

Granted not all grandmothers are old but most are on the older side of life.

It's not a bad image. She has bright eyes, a smile, and a pleasant face. It's not a harmful image and a quick glance tells you what it's about. Quick comprehension is the point. Detailed pickiness about grey hair etc is just, well, pickiness to no good purpose.

I was nearly that age too but had to just get on with it as the young girl in the next room (married to a much older man) was screaming the hospital down and yelling for her Mummy.

I wonder if she's a Grandmother now? Or, quite possibly, even a Great-Grandmother 😲
Is she grey haired? I don't know but I'm not 👩

Perhaps some would prefer this 😡, I can think of a few

When DD3 was at primary school, I was the oldest mum and older than some of the other kids' grandmas.

So what?

Tell me what else that grandma emoji could be mistaken for.

What about the sign for elderly people crossing the road? An old couple, bent over, both with walking sticks!

Georgesgran Thu 09-Nov-23 18:58:32

Is the ‘slow’ meant for motorists, or it is to describe the elderly! 😂

If it's in Wales SLOW means the motorists 😁

Which is to signify that they might be slow crossing the road.

A completely useful image. Like the ones near schools warning of children posibly scampering about not paying attention.

She looks like me!
With the exception that I have a side parting, and my hair is no longer as thick as emoji granny, and I only wear glasses for reading.

I do wish people would stop taking offence where offence is almost certainly not intended. How fragile they must be? Or grumpy. 🤷

Here's a golden grandma 👵

Couldn’t agree more. Some refer to the younger generation as snowflakes they need to read GN.

Where did you find that photo of me sarahcyn!
grin

Kim19 Fri 10-Nov-23 08:46:38

Makes me smile and glad that I'm obviously not 'there' yet.

Looks like Nadine Dorries.

I saw this sign somewhere with the "SLOW Elderly People" crossed out, and, "BEWARE, Pick Pockets " written over it. grin

There's no emoji for daughter, son, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, granddaughter or grandson.

I suspect there are only children adults and older adults really.

If you search for "old" or "older" you do get an option for an emoji with hair
